Birch Beer
A girlfriend and I were talking the other day about a favorite from our younger years. We both remember Birch Beer "on tap" but cannot remember the brand or where we had it.
We lived outside of DC in the Springfield/Burke area. Any of you have an idea as to the brand or where we had it (or where we can find it now in St. Louis or Cincinnati)?

Birch Beer was the one soda my parents would buy occasionally. I loved the stuff too! oh well another online search ;-)

No brand names, but a question I've wondered about for years - why is Middle Atlantic birch beer normally brown, while New England birch beer is normally clear? Both styles taste pretty much the same, but the different appearance can be disconcerting if you're used to one and faced with the other.

We had Birch Beer all the time growing up in PA. I actually had some on tap at a Philly Connection in Birmingham, AL a couple years ago. It's a regional thing I think. We also had something called Sarsaparilla Soda. Similar to root beer I think.

I've never had it on tap, but I actively search out Boylans birch beer. So delicious!

I had birch beer growing up as well (also in NJ) but I didn't know it was a regional thing. There's a great texmex fast food chain in TX that had red birch beer on tap and it was awesome.

"...why is Middle Atlantic birch beer normally brown, while New England birch beer is normally clear?"
It's the type of birch that gives it it's color. There are alot of white birch trees up and around the new england area and more common birch in the Mid Atlantic.
