Best gnocchi you've had in NYC?
I'd like to take a friend out for his birthday. Boy, does he like gnocchi. The fluffy soft ricotta kind. Any suggestions?

Go to Esca, the sheep's milk ricotta gnocchi there are legendary.

If you can get into spotted pig, their gnudi are exceptional. Not exactly gnocchi, but similar...
There are great teeny-tiny gnocchi at Sorella, too.

OMG, I LOVE SORELLA!!! The gnocchi are good, but not in the same league. Another place that has good gnocchi is Gennaro, but they are potato, not ricotta.

The Spotted Pig's gnudi is excellent.
Also recommend the ricotta gnocci at Lupa - delicious little pillows!

I thought the gnocchi at Lupa was phenomenal! You wouldn't believe how sad I was when I finished my dish.

Dell' Anima on Jane St. and 8th Ave. If you can't get a reservation, walk in - you'll be glad you did.

I've had the gnocchi at Babbo and Lupa and they don't compare to Hearth. Hearth's are beautiful little lumps that are so airy, they seem fake. They melt before they even hit your mouth, falling apart on the spoon. It's a trick of gravity.

I loved the gnocchi at Del Posto. It was pan seared so it had a crispy "skin" with a fluffy pillowy innard. The ragu that came with it was also excellent. The gnocchi was better than the one I had at Lupa and Babbo, even though they were also very good.
I agree with kathryn that the gnocchi at Hearth was excellent as well. You can get that at Insieme as well.

I also loved Lupa's gnocchi, and now want to go to these other recommended places!

They're a little unconventional, but the toasted gnocchi at Jane on Houston always please. Whenever I go to Esca, I can't seem to manage to order anything but the flights of crudo!

i prefer gnudi to gnocchi, in which case, mia dona. i wasn't a fan of the gnocchi at lupa

Thanks all so much. I can't wait to try gnudi...

I am a big fan of the East Village "homestyle Italian" spots (Frank, Supper, Max) and as far as gnocch, I really enjoyed Max best for plain mozz + red sauce gnocchi, and Il Bagatto for their spinach and gorgonzola gnocchi

Gnocco on 10th street b/t A & B has affordable and excellent gnocchi topped with creamy buffalo mozzarella. It's from the same guy behind Perbacco so you know it's good. The Tartufata (mushrooms, truffle oil and speck) pizza is also incredible. It's also a great date spot thanks to the awesome garden in the back...

Not what you're expecting to hear, but the best gnocchi I've had was the potato-almond gnocchi at the veg restaurant, Counter. It's an appetizer, but it's a generous portion and they are so light and fluffy and beautiful....
