Any Recs for Great Ethiopian in NYC?
Hi eaters!
My friends and I are currently trying to explore some different kinds of cuisine. We've already mastered the hummus/middle-eastern arena (Taim DOES match expectations!) and I'm trying to come up with a new direction to head in. I've had one experience with Ethiopian food and it was really, really fantastic - I'd love for us to be able to enjoy a great Ethiopian place in the NYC area! Any recommendations are GREATLY appreciated!
:)

Depending on your definition of 'NYC area', Makeda in New Brunswick, NJ has been very good every time we've been there. www.makedas.com

I second Ghenet. Unfortunately their Manhattan location is closed, so they're now out in Park Slope. Their food is really wonderful, though - worth the near-hour-long train trip I have to take to get there!

Ghenet in Brooklyn is probably the best.
The problem is, anyone who says how great Ethiopian food is hasn't actually been to Ethiopia. The food there really isn't that great.
Americanized Ethiopian food can be a real treat, however.

It's too bad Blue Nile closed, it was much better than any other Manhattan choices

I heard Zoma in Harlem is really good - but haven't been yet... It's at 113th & Frederick Douglas Blvd (aka 8th Ave). Lot's of African folks in this area so that's probably a good sign. It gets 4 out of 5 stars on Citysearch and other sites.

There is always Awash on 6th street among all the curry joints. The place is solid and they have a great South African Sauv Blanc that goes well with everything on the menu.
