You live where?

I've been a SE follower for a few months or so, and have gotten to know several of the regular posters by name. Is there a way to tell where everyone lives...not addresses, just by state or large city? I read post that I would like to follow up on, but don't know if they are 2 miles, 200 miles or 2000 miles from me. BTW, I live in the Ozarks in Missouri, better known as Dysfunction Junction, Misery!!!

268 Comments:

I'm in MA half way between Boston & Providence

I live in London, Ontario, Canada. It is about half way between Toronto, ON, and Detroit, MI - we are about two hours from the border.

@karencooks - The Ozarks - cool! Would love to visit there some day.

It's good to see this thread pop up again, as it's always interesting.

I'm in the big little city of Luna Pier, Michigan, with a Lake Erie beachfront six miles north of the Ohio state line. I ran the beachhouse concession last summer, serving Flint-style coneys, our own style of nachos, and Blue Bunny ice cream novelties.

Dave
Luna Pier Cook

@bareneed, London is cool! It's been probably 35 years that I've occasionally visited, and when I was little, Storybook Gardens was a great place to go with friends. :-)

@LunaPierCook - I guess "Slippery" the Seal was found in Lake Erie, close to you after escaping from Storybook about fifty years ago! Storybook is still going but struggling and losing money - kids seem to need something more stimulating these days. Nice to know you are close by - we pass you on I-75 on our way to Charleston, S.C. each year!

Halfway between Vancouver, BC and Seattle, WA.

I moved to Vermont about a year ago, and am living in a small ski town south of Rutland. - Amy

I live in small town Wisconsin, about 20 miles West of Green Bay. No place exciting, that's for sure!

St. Louis, MO-- want to visit the Ozarks again this summer :-)

And another St. Louisan originally from St. Francois County.

I think you're all pretty aware I live in Florida. I say Orlando, but to be more specific, I live in Windermere...behind the Magic Kingdom.

Marco Island, a resort community in Southwest Florida on the tip of the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands.

Small coastal town in Maine - no take-out, no ethnic food, closest good restaurants are 30 miles south in Camden/Rockland

i live in manhattan, close to the northernmost tip of the city, so i call myself a canhattanite.

Liverpool, NY here--a northern 'burb of Syracuse. ~Diana

Small barrier island town Tampa Bay area. Tourista Central!!

Ann Arbor Michigan, but originally from Chicago and looking forward to going back there soon.

Flagstaff, AZ - a high-elevation smallish college/resort town 2 hrs north of Phx and 1 hr from the Grand Canyon

Currently living in Pittsburgh, PA because my husband is pursuing his PhD at Pitt. Lived in NYC before this for grad school.

However, I grew up in a medium sized town at the midpoint of the VA-NC border (Danville, VA) and definitely consider myself very Southern, especially when it comes to food traditions. The biggest culture shock for me moving to Pittsburgh was the Eastern European influence on the food here....where's my biscuits??

Born in Pomona CA, grew up in Washington DC, go to college in Chicago, and spending my third year studying in London (UK)! I'm really loving finding out about different kinds of British food. My boyfriend and I made cullen skink (a scottish chowder made with smoked haddock and mashed potatoes) a couple weeks ago, and it was awesome. He's threatening me with haggis next (he's not actually Scottish, but apparently has a weird fixation...). He claims it's really delicious, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to get onboard the whole oatmeal-inside-a-sheeps-stomach wagon...yikes

I'm in MA about 10 miles west of Boston. Zone 2 on the commuter rail.

On an island... kinda. Really more of a peninsula, but people who name things around here aren't exactly up on proper geographical nomenclature. In Memphis, Tennessee.

My husband and I live in downtown Calgary, Alberta but we're from small towns a couple hours north of Toronto.

I'm in West Hartford, Ct. halfway between Boston and NYC

I live in Manhattan, UES, for school. My family's in Kalamazoo Michigan.

@finsbigfan--That's not Longboat Key, is it? Beautiful place, if so. My husband is from Palmetto.

I'm in central CA, about 30 miles from Fresno, right smack in the middle of the state.

I'm in Wilmington, Delaware for another few months then moving up to Philadelphia. I'm originally from Minnesota and love my home state!

I'm from London, UK, but have been living in Toms River, NJ for the last 6.5 years.

I live in Newtown, Bucks County, PA - suburb of Philly. Good restaurants, good shopping and lots of big/little museums to visit.

Portland Oregon!!!

I live in HOTlanta, GA. We migrated here due to BF's job offer and I mean to tell you, I couldn't be happier. It's in the south but still experiences seasons which makes it NIRVANA.

Las Vegas here :-)

Upstate New York in the southern tier - spring has finally arrived!

I live in Ambler, Montgomery County, PA ~ also a suburb of Philadelphia. I grew up in Kennebunkport, ME. And, I really miss it!

Upstate NY, in the Hudson Valley. But the REAL upstate is where I was raised, in the Finger Lakes, and boy do I miss it.

@moibec ~ We go to the Finger Lakes every other year. It is fabulous!

Flushing, New York in the borough of Queens!!

New Mexico. About an hour from Santa Fe and 2 hours from Albuquerque. High elevation here, much like joyyy in Flagstaff.

I'm in Vancouver, WA, right across the Columbia River from Portland, OR. From my living room and deck I can see PDX airport and the downtown skyline.

Colorado. Boulder is the closest town anyone's ever heard of. We moved here from Chicago and I've got to say that it was a bit of culture shock to see a heard of cows grazing across the street from the mall.

And adjusting to mile-high cooking has been interesting, too.

@dbcurrie- I can totally identify with you on the high altitude cooking thing. Cakes are especially a challenge. I have one in the oven right now.

@sailordave-- Bellingham. Used to live in Alger. Originally from the Rochester, NY area.

Just outside Hartford, CT, btwn NYC and Boston.

@brooke29, Had no idea you where so close! I live in Jackson NJ. For the non-New Jerseyian's, thats the dead center of the state and where Six Flags Great Adventure is.

@Maureen- I have a camp on the US side of the St. Lawrence between O'burg and Morristown. Are you in Prescott or Brockville? I love the fish 'n chips, especially "Don's" in Brockville. Give me a shout.

@dbcurrie - I can also identify with the culture shock. I moved from Brooklyn NY to a TINY hamlet in the southwest corner of Colorado. So in other words, I was Lisa Douglas in Green Acres.

I did love it though and if I were able to live in Durango I'd still be there. Beautiful state.

Upstate NY, south of Ithaca

Atlanta, Georgia here!

Grew up in Salt Lake City-- lived in Austin, Portland, Sacramento after college-- back in Salt Lake again. Happy to be here-- but also missing Austin like crazy!

Sarasota, Florida!

I was born in Houston, TX, lived in Austin, and now am a suburbanite residing in The Woodlands, TX, just north of Houston!

Eugene, Oregon! (Also Portland/Bend/Seattle with family part time...)

I'm in the DC metropolitan area, in the suburbs an hour away

Oklahoma City, where we either have summer or winter (or tornadoes) and waaaaay too many chain restaurants. I would live in Portland, OR if I could!!! Some of my family lives there and I go visit whenever I get the chance.

Berkeley, a few blocks from Chez Panisse, but I grew up on the South Side of Chicago.

Orcas Island, WA to my great delight.

Seattle Wa, on Lake Union, literally on Lake Washington (live on a houseboat). lol.

On a hill in San Francisco.....

@dmcavanagh - Brockville - and Don's is the best!

I spend almost half the year in Portsmouth, NH and almost the other half in Birmingham, AL the rest of the time I spend on a plane between the two....

Minoo, Osaka, about 15 minutes by train from Osaka city.

Brooklyn, NY and missing native "20 minutes outside Boston"...

Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada......living with the Inuit and Santa Claus!

It is amusing and interesting that some of you are from my old home and some are new neighbors (I can see Orcas Island from my back porch), all brought together by food and the interwebs. And I've visited 27 of the places listed so far, we might have bumped into each other. Cheers All!

Iowa city-grew up in northern Mn.Really miss living in Mn!

Albuquerque, NM, by way of Miami, FL. Culture shock, but after 3 years we are adjusting. Miss the Cuban restaurants and coffee.

Columbus, Ohio. im only now beginning to discover all the amazing food possibilities here.

ideally i want to relocate to the East Coast

A nudist resort in deep, deep south Texas, full of winter Texans during the season, quiet during the heat of summer. 30 miles from the Mexico border...tons of Tex-Mex food joints...and Chinese curiously enough.

During a pot luck we might experience food from French Canadians to Germans to mid-west folks, Southerners...and every thing in between.

Dallas part time and Nieuweigen, the Netherlands the rest!

Seattle (Cap. Hill).

Roseville, CA - a suburb of Sacramento

Austin, Texas. Not far from I-35 and Round Rock's Salt Lick BBQ. I used to live in the New York City area for over 40 years. Serious Eats seems to be coming down here every week!

Right now, I'm in the San Fernando Valley northwest of Los Angeles. It's a culinary wasteland. I miss my old home in Victoria, BC, and I envy all you folks who live up in the Pacific Northwest. I wanna go HOME!

I grew up in Allentown, Pa then on to Birmingham, AL then to San Antonio, TX, then to Nashville, TN and finally here in Raleigh, NC now.

First and foremost Molokai Hawaii, then the San Francisco Bay Area, and now ......and this is really sad in some ways but not all Warsaw Indiana a place of no culture and food here is an after thought. Crying in Warsaw

@nmallory - I've always wondered what Roseville, CA is like. I used to live Roseville, MN and whenever I tried to lookup a city website (like the license bureau) Roseville CA always came up first!

Currently living near Baltimore, MD but Lancaster, PA will always be my home.

I currently live in Hoboken, NJ though I've spent the majority of the past ten years living in New York city (my husband dragged me back to his homeland of New Jersey). But my true home and native land is Canada, Calgary to be exact.

New Orleans, LA

@christineb haggis can be quite good if done correctly, though I do recall a particular Robby Burns night when one of my friends mums went around to all the tables with "Haggis Gravy" which was just warm Scotch Whisky

in bangor, me. from hudson, nh.

Brooklyn, but I grew up in Mexico and Jerusalem. I've lived in Austin and Ann Arbor for school. My boyfriend is from Fuzhou, China, and lived there until he came to New York.

Eventually he wants to get married (ahhh! I'm SO not bride material) and move out to the West Coast, perhaps Seattle...

Hello,

Saying ¡Hola! from Mexico City, Mexico

Hi

Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

Grew up in Northern NJ (Bergen County) but am currently living in Brooklyn, NY.

Austin, TX--just moved here from Houston in August, lived in St. Louis until I was six, born in Seoul (haven't been back yet).

Currently I live on the "Mainline" just outside Philadelphia. I'm originally from DC, but grew up in NYC/ North Jersey and Virginia.

North Jersey, bergen county

Merced, California. San Joaquin Valley.

I live in Manila... and get to travel to San Francisco often enough. Hmm.. I seem to be the only one on this thread from Southeast Asia..

Brisbane, Australia

Cambridge, UK.

Raised about an hour east of Chicago, currently in Indianapolis. Didn't wander far...

Flying the flag for Sydney, Australia here! G'Day everyone.

Loving the country life just outside of Knox, Indiana, but grew up about a half hour outside Chi-town.

Pittsburgh, PA on the North Side.

I'm within walking distance of the Penn Brewery and restaurant, across the river from the Strip District with its ethnic markets, a ten minute drive to Little Italy (which for some reason serves the BEST pirogies), and across two rivers from the south side.

I'm in upstate NY too....Angola....on Lake Erie....about 20 miles south of Buffalo....40 miles south of @WS lunch.....on the other end of Lake Erie from @Luna Pier Cook!

@joeqboo....I work in the Strip, it is a blessing and a curse. I spent waaaay too much money at Penzey's spices last week and eating lunch out everyday is often too tempting to resist. Chicken Latino is my current fave.

Cultural hotbed of America (if you like college football, that is)...Auburn, AL.

Hey BrunswickStew - Not a football fan but when I lived in Bham...if I had to make a choice...loved my Auburn friends (and the town) more than the Alabama ones!

Born in NYC, lived in LA, Texas, Florida, am now in the southeastern corner of CT...live there by the shore and do my grocery shopping in RI. Seems like I am always searching for good deli or 'que or Tex-Mex. Once it's in your blood...

I grew up in Ann Arbor and am currently living in Ypsilanti, Mi.

I started following SE when I was living in Ontario, California. Now I'm back living in JAKARTA, Indonesia (hmmm... am I the second Southeast Asian here?)

@cdp1223 - The Penn Mac is my downfall. I go in there for "just one thing" and I come out with all kinds of cheese, olives, antipasti (I love their blend), and sausages.

Also the Parma Sausage company is bad for me to walk into as well.

And the $5 pepperoni roll at Sunseri's is great for the price. And I love the sushi at Wholey's and their fried cod.

We're planning on heading to Sushi Kim's for Korean BBQ night.

I'm currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio (Clifton Gaslight, specifically) but wouldn't mind moving West.

@gingercookiewithlime: I went to college in Athens, OH...miss Casa, the Burrito Buggy and the cheap beer.

Upstate NY, about an hour north of Albany on the Vermont border. Originally from Brooklyn which I miss every day!

Lived back and forth between Richmond, Va. and Newport News, Va. Finally bought a house ten years ago and have been in the "Bad News" ever since. Looking to move back up towards Williamsburg(the real one in Va.) again in the near future.

The self-proclaimed NYC of the South...Atlanta, GA!

Looks like a lot of us from da Calumet Region. I grew up on the Illinois/Indiana border, but got out as soon as I turned 18. Don't get me wrong, I still crave a good dog, proper pizza and an IB.

Houston, Texas

Silver Spring, MD

Just outside of Detroit.

I lived in and around Boston, Massachusetts (Cambridge, Medford, Malden, Somerville, Bedford) my whole life, until five years ago when we relocated to a town just southwest of Atlanta, Georgia. I miss New England, for sure, but there is something to be said for the beautiful Georgia springtime!

Boise, Idaho.
Great Potatoes and great Basque food.

Born and raised in Lima, OH.
Now I live quite near Eugene, OR.

@smokey07, my dad was born in Boise. =)

grew up in Silver Spring, MD, went to school in Boston, and have been bouncing around between Boston, LA and New York over the last 2 years. Made my home in Brooklyn but recently moved back home to Silver Spring for a job in DC. Hoping to move into the city soon enough, but am seriously missing the NYC life....

@Arcticsushi - No way! Nunavut?! Even more brrrrr

Albany, NY.

Olympia, WA. Two hours from my beloved Portland, Oregon and one hour from Seattle. It's all good :)

The Land of Candy Raisins, Butter Burgers, Frozen Custard and The Bronz Fonz - Milwaukee, WI . Yah! Yah! Milwaukee!

Lisbon, Portugal

I was born and raised in Northern Indiana, roughly an hour southeast of NotreDameville, a.k.a South Bend.

I'm more than willing to travel north for a meet up with Michigan SE'ers...any takers??

northeast oklahoma. oh yes, behold.

I'm here in the Minne Apple (Minneapolis, MN). I moved around a lot when I was a kid, and went to University of Iowa, but happy to be back! It's fun to see some familiar cities listed here, and some very far away ones.

Charlottesville, Virginia.

Grew up in Cleveland, OH. Philadelphia for college, and now live in Manhatten.

Gainesville Florida , home of the Fightin' Gators! (dont I sound enthused?)

Brooklyn, NY!

South Lake Tahoe, CA... land of extremely overpriced groceries (but great scenery!) Seems that small mountain towns are pretty underrepresented on SE... I guess mountain people aren't known to be foodies;)

Silver Spring, MD
If you click on the persons name under the comments section it will show in their profile where they are from, if they willed in the info.

Maryland Crab

Normally I float between northern NJ and upstate NY (home/family and school) but I'm currently located in Wellington, NZ--quite far away! SE is just as tasty down here too...

Redding CA or as I like to call it reddineck.

Looks like there are three of us in London, Ontario, Canada. I'm here too!

Oshkosh, Wisconsin

@jdshd -- I went to high school in West Chester and we always played Lima. Do you know if they still have the Kewpies there? I loved that place!

@mepolo, so you're who gets all our lake water when we get a good westerly breeze! ;-)

i live in san juan, puerto rico

I've been in Seattle for 10 years now but grew up in the Bay Area (East Bay & Marin). I'm luck to have been around two great food areas!

grew up in concord, ma -- land of the grape, walden pond, and louisa may alcott. (which is why i complain alton brown pronounces it wrong in his commercials. should be just like the word "conquered", not "conCORD!"

lived in washington dc, madrid, and london,

have been in west hollywood, CA for the last three years!

Another Oregonian here--P-Town represents!

San Juan, Puerto Rico too!!!! I am glad to see a few Puerto Ricans out here in our foodie community.

Chicago...Bucktown to be more specific.

I'm here in beautiul, coastal East Greenwich, Rhode Island
Seafood Heaven!

East of Tucson, AZ....hotsy totsy! We're trying to grow a garden in our backyard using stock tanks and plastic kiddie swimming pools. It's 3/23 and we have over 30 tomatoes about the size of my thumbnail or bigger!!!

@seitel-- where in northeast OK do you live? I was born in Bartlesville but moved at 5 yrs old. When I was in college my dad got transferred back to Bville with Phillips and they decided to stay forever. Beautiful countryside!

I always enjoy these threads. People live in such interesting places. Makes me want to jump into my car and go visit!

I'm in Somerset, NJ, just across the river from Rutgers' (yeah, I know, rotten football season last year) stadium. We can hear the cheering of the fans when the players are doing well. We're also located pretty much in the center of the state, about 1 hour from NYC in normal traffic.

@ megannesta, I feel your pain and AMEN .... 1 state above you with our very own Concord that out of staters want to pronounce conCORD when it should be pronounced conquered! Write it down people... you will be tested

I'm in Western NY, mid-way between Buffalo and Erie, PA, in-land from the lake by about a mile and really close to you, mepolo--which I already knew based upon your earlier comments about being able to smell the Cheerios baking going in and out of Buffalo. This is a good place to live for a foodie--lots and lots of really good little places dot the countryside in every direction, and the vibe here is way casual, so one can feel comfortable in even the most elite spots without necessarily having to go formal.

I split my time between my mother and father's houses. Mom is in Monmouth county, NJ (Holmdel, but don't get any ideas. We are not the stereotype) and my Dad lives just outside Flemington.

I go to school in State College, PA and live here for 8 months of the year.

@lpc - yes...we do get all your water....and your big logs too....our beach has about 1/2 doz giant trees on it right now....what do you use those for....log rolling contests? lol

@bobbieann - you must be REALLY close.....you are right....I love living here....the produce in the summer is so great, and I'm excited that we're seeing more local producers of meat too. I buy Upstate Farms products pretty loyally so I can buy local dairy as much as possible too. Now if it would just warm up a bit too...I'm desperate for real spring weather! lol

London, ON people - I spent my early summers in London and Dashwood (400 people; too small to be on the map in those days!). My aunt owned a restaurant in Grand Bend; I can still taste her amazing butter tarts (question for discussion: raisins or no raisins?) Born in L.A., six years in OC, now in San Diego. Will never ever ever live where it rains too much or snows at all. It's 70 here today, and beautiful. Happy Spring, everybody!

My family is from the southeastern Kentucky, between Pinetop and Whitesburg. I was born & still live in Dayton, Ohio.
I learn to cook at my Mother's & Grandmother's knee in Kentucky where chicken feet & pork neck bones were a normal meal haha

Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, lived in NYC/Brooklyn on/off for five years, have spent the past 2 1/2 in Portland, OR. Awesome foodie town but not too many jobs for an art historian. :-(

Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep. and New York City (Gramercy Park to be specific). I was once wondering about the same thing. Thanks for posting.

@earlybirdkate- im in cincy too, specifically greenhills.

I live in Queens, New York, as you can probably guess from my username. Western Queens.

Mice thread.
Born St. Louis, MO, grew up in Bethesda, MD when it was out on the edge of the WashDC metro area. Went to boarding school in Concord, MA - so I know how to pronounce it - college in Cambridge MA then three years Navy (destroyer officer) based in Norfolk, then 4 years grad school back in Cambridge, then to Chicago three years. Transferred to Santa Barbara three years, then four years Seattle (Bainbridge Island, actually) then back to Santa Barbara again for three years and then back to Chicago for the last thirty. Lousy choice; too cold, too crowded.

More than any of you wanted to know!

Ybor City, Tampa, Florida

Sydney, Australia. Spent my childhood and early-teen years in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Born in Texas, raised in St. Louis. Lived in California, La., Mi., Oh. and K.C. Was with Chrysler Motors Corp and Itel Corp. Promoted and transferred a lot. Settled in Arkansas, live outside Little Rock in a little community called Maumelle. Retired and happy! old chef

Born in Georgia, Raised in Alabama...traveled with my job the last 8 years in Central American, Caribbean, Europe, and West Africa.

Currently just set down in California, between San Jose and San Francisco.

Born, raised, and educated in Providence and Warwick Rhode Island. Spent some years in Milwaukee but thank gawd I'm home now!

@earlybirdkate: Ever been to Foosackly's chicken finger restaurant in Mobile? I miss that place now that I'm on the west coast; always visited when I was in town!

Weird, you don't see this much chat about London, Ontario too often! That's where I'm from too.

South Portland Maine

I like to see Canada representing! But let me add my name to the list of folk from London ON! I lived there for 13ish years, and am only down the street an hour or so now.

I am back fairly frequently and am always happy to see new restaurants open. When I first moved there in 1991, there was not many options for either fine dining or 'ethnic' dining...now I'm glad to see that there are more options of both, if only you get off the main drags (Wellington South etc)

@London-ites - as far as I can figure, that is at least a half dozen of us! Amazing!

I'm a mere hour or two away from you--in Mid-Misery! I'm 30 miles southeast of Jefferson City. I grew up in Idaho and Utah, then I married and moved to Boston. Big time culture shock! I loved living there. Then lived in Tempe, Arizona; El Centro, California (don't ask); and had a glorious 15 years in San Diego. I remarried, and my husband went to grad school at MU in Columbia. It has taken quite an adjustment to living in this small, rural town of 1600 people. However, we've been here almost two years and I'm still relatively sane. Don't know how much longer it will last, though. LOL!!

Hong Kong, but originally from New Jersey

Originally from So Cal; our permanent residence is 30 miles east of Seattle (just east of a large computer company); but we are currently in the middle of a 2-3 year assignment in Israel. We're renting a house in Caesarea (closest major city is Haifa.)

dbcurrie - tell me about it, sounds like the first time I got stuck behind a tractor on my way home from work, or the traffic jam on the highway the first day they put the lambs out to pasture in the spring. My favorite is the farmers that drive their tractors to the store for more beer because they're too drunk to drive a car!

Southern-ish Maine. Do not like it. Moving to Brooklyn in a few months for pastry school and planning to stay there. For a while, at least.

Fresno CA chowhound here.

Troy Ohio

I'm in the burbs of Philly in Chester Co.
jcrisdo in orlando-where do you like to eat? Family is coming to Orlando on the 4th for a week and we're looking for good but inexpensive food like BBQ, breakfast, ethnic. Don't care much for the park food.

Baton Rouge, LA

Blenheim, New Zealand -- over the "ditch" (ie. Cook Strait. For those that don't know - it's a country of 3 islands to the east of Australia) from cardamompod in Wellington, NZ

@sammie, there's only 2 of us in the Portland, ME area it seems! I guess we're just going to have to represent Portland's budding foodie community ourselves!

@MACDodge: my DH is from Queensbury

I am originally from Plymouth, MA.

But we are transplants to the culinary wasteland that is Cincinnati, OH.
