Wines for Asian Cuisine

I am going to be catering an event with heavy emphasis on Asian cusine. My challenge is they want wines that will pair well with the food and they want suggestions on Asian wines. Besides Sake I gave them the "Scooby Doo" look and told them I would get back to them. Any suggesstions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Asian wine?

You might need to clarify the cuisine. Asia is a big continent.

In general, though your best pairings would come in the form of rieslings and gewurztraminers.

Ideally Thai Food for the most part with a few Japanese dishes

I asked that same question of my local wine merchant and he pointed me towards an Asian pear wine. Not sure if it was made from Asian pears, or if it was an Asian-style wine (if there is such a thing) made from regular pears. It was pretty tasty, from what I recall.

A Japanese restaurant we used to go to served a plum wine that I was later able to find at an Asian grocer. One version was sweet, one wasn't. Whether this was at all authentically Asian, or just packaged with decorative characters for the American market, I have no idea.

I've often paired Thai food with white zinfandel and pinot grigios with great results. Thai beer (Singha is most widely available in the States) is also a good choice.

A fairly crisp Riesling goes well with spicy Thai food.

Awesome. Thank you all for the feedback. I know in China there are some wineries who use the grape 'Cabernet Gernischt' but I have yet to meet anyone who has drank any wine from that country. Their wine must either be very forgettable or a great secret.

I've had plum wine at a chinese restaurant before. I recall it being rather sweet, but quite tasty.

japanese plums: ume. my sister got me some ume tea. its really sweet.

as for asian wine, might i suggest also considering asian beer. its what my husband likes to get at chinese restaurants.
