Where did all the white grapefruits go?
What happened to white grapefruits? All I have seen in years are those nasty Ruby Reds.
I'm in Toronto. Are people in other places noticing this? Does anybody in Toronto know where I can still find those delicious white grapefruits?

My Dad buys big bags of white grapefruits from Sam's Club. I suspect all Sam's Clubs and Walmarts carry similar produce, if there's one in your area, it might be worth a shot.

I've got 2 trees full of them. White grapefruit is a crapshoot. Some years they are sweet. Some years they are mouth puckering sour. Ruby Reds are pretty consistant. That's why they are more popular. BTW I have used them to marinate and make mojo (don't laugh it tastes great) I have also frozen alot of juice. Goes great with vodka! Will love it in July making big pitchers of Greyhounds (Salty Dogs without the salt)

@fins - i'm so jealous, grapefruit is my absolute favorite fruit. i bet the mojo is exquisite. grapefruit is such a clean tasting fruit and the fragrance is heavenly, too.
people who smell like grapefruit are ethereal.

@pooch -- I agree with you. The Gap used to put out a fragrance called So Pink which smelled like pink grapefruit, and I'd wear it all the time and have people follow me down the street saying, "What are you wearing?? You smell delicious!!"

i still see white grapefruits all over in brooklyn. unfortunately it's a little harder to find white grapefruit juice (at least at bodegas)..the pink stuff is way too sweet, especially as a mixer.

OP: good question - my guess is that too many people do not appreciate how good a sweet *and* tart grapefruit can be .. so the markets just stopped stocking these. Yes I miss these too. The pink ones can be counted on to never be tart - a bit boring, yes.
Reminds me of the times when the only apples one could find were either golden or red delicious. Hopefully the yellow grapefruits will come back.

My DH can eat these GF out of hand like apples or pears. I can't eat or drink grapefruit, it just makes me gag. It's so, so bitter, like poison.
But I think it's an allergy or aversion, as I got really sick over OJ as a baby. The Doc said to stop giving me OJ if I was throwing up. So it was ascorbic acid tabs for a while. Now I eat much more various fresh fruits & vegs.
It's really the citrus pith that I find intolerable. But it's chunked up into so many processed juices that I have to taste and try anything with a lot of citrus to deem it tolerable or not.
Sip worthy?

I think they're all still hanging on the trees down here! I live in Florida and most of the people I know who have grapefruit trees in their yard have the white variety. I prefer the pink or red because they're sweeter.
