What was the last great meal (I mean GREAT) that you had?

Today, we had the most fabulous Peking Duck, inserted into those steamed chinese buns, swathed with hoisin sauce, and topped with shaved scallions. Words can't do it justice, we will be talking of it for years. Crispy skin, succulent meat, with the sweet sauce on that tender bun, and the shaved onions giving texture and depth. Grrrr. Got me thinking, when was the last time I had such a taste sensation? I guess it all depends on your tastes. What was the last meal that got you saying, OH, YES!

It was very humble, simple food, but it was FUCKING DELICIOUS. My dad and I go to this Mexican market together called Northgate here in the Los Angeles area. They have "fast food," like carnitas, refried beans, Mexican rice, etc., etc. We noticed that they were slacking when it came to the quality of their carnitas, so we decided to head over to this other chain Mexican market called Amapola. The place was packed! Aside from having a totilleria, panaderia, and carniceria on site, they also has a bunch of ready-made "fast food."

My dad got carnitas, fresh refried beans and homemade tortillas- all of which was delicious. I have been searching for a cheese tamale forever. I had one years ago, but whenever I go to Mexican markets or whole-in-the-wall places they only seem to have chicken, pork, beef, and the dulce kind. Anyhow, Amapola had THE MOST DELICIOUS cheese tamales ever. I seriously called my boyfriend while eating it and said, "This is the best thing I've ever put in my mouth." They were stuffed with a blend of cheese and a long, pickled jalapeno.

I want another, like, now.

I make a lot of things that just hit all the high points often. Thanksgiving infamously is this kind of a meal here. It is just the best damn stuff ever.
Most recently I made a killer chicken piccata. All the flavors were hitting the high notes and I served it with cous cous. A great combo.
A chicken marsala with locally grown crimini mushrooms and dry vermouth in place of the marsala wine.
We had a simple roast chicken I slathered with chili paste and garlic that came perfect with crispy skin and was redolent with the chili garlic flavor.
A great pulled pork that I dry rubbed then stuck away in the fridge for 2 days, low and slow and it just fell apart when I took a fork to it. When pork is good its really good.
My lasagne 2 days old. Nothing is better than 2 day old lasagne it is like a damn symphony.
We went out recently to eat and I had a stuffed pork chop with an apple brioche stuffing that was freaking right on the money. Great garlic mashed too.

Chef's choice (omakase) sushi @ Daiwa sushi in Tsukiji for breakfast.
well worth getting up early (because they close as soon as they run out of fish) and 3500 yen and an hour wait. mmmmm.

A couple weeks ago I made Ina Garten's slow-cooked shortribs and vegetables in red wine and beef broth. Melt-in-your-mouth goodness! We had it with homemade biscuits and honey. My husband stuffed himself to the point where he was moaning in pain on the couch afterward, asking, "Why didn't you stop me?"

I do have a couple dry-rubbed ribeye steaks in the fridge right now, awaiting grillage tonight. We'll see how that turns out.

the night the storm hit, katrina to the rest of the world, i had two trees that came down on my house, the water was still very high and i knew this was the worst storm i'd ever been thru.

cleared a 4x4 spot on my deck, got the bbq pit very hot and using an old cast iron pot, i boiled shrimp in butter. with devastation all around me, this simple meal was very memorable.

I ate a half slab of pork ribs at City BBQ on Friday night...I'm still drooling at the thought. Perfect meat to fat ration...meat so tender it just about fell off the bone when I picked them up...very flavorful sweet, yet tangy sauce...really moist and tender but with a good amount of...chew, for lack of a better word. The mac and cheese and hush puppies on the side were amazing, as was the texas toast, but next time I think I'll just get one side and a full rack of ribs...

Braised beef cheek with sweetbreads over sweet potato puree. With a fabulous wine pairing. At Cafe Atlantico in Washington DC. So delicious - the beef cheek was just excellent; both texture and flavor. All of the combination of flavors and textures were well balanced.

while in cancun we did a day trip. a four hour ride into the jungle to see the inca ruins. on the ride back we stopped at this place for a meal. i had my first bowl ever of tortillia soup with these buttered croutons. made my toes curl it was so good.

went to Michael Symon's Roast in Detroit.
everything was really, really good. i'm still dreaming of those beef cheek pierogi i had.

Huby and I had what I consider to be one of the top three meals of my life last nite. Went to a local Zagat rated thai place down the street. Kobe beef barbecued to perfection, red tuna crusted and sliced paper thin on a bed of
wasabi paste, and oysters that were so fresh they must have walked onto my plate themselves. I had chilean sea bass in a soy buerre blanc sauce that I am still dreaming about. Hubby had duck confit on a rasberry reduction. Oh, I want more!

I was 25 years old, just married and moved to Paris. We went to a little Michelin one star near Les Invalides where I had some type of fish with beurre blanc sauce. It was my first time to ever taste beurre blanc and I liked it so much the chef had them bring more to the table! I have eaten many great meals since then but that one will always stand out.

There was a Vietnamese (sp?) restaurant in my neighborhood when I was a kid that made the world's greatest fried spring/egg roll things. Light, thin and crispy wrappers around a hugely flavorful filling, paired with the perfect dipping sauce.

I ate them once a month until we moved away... Sad that they're gone now.
