Tex-Mex in NYC?
A few former Texans that I know have been singing the praises of Tex-Mex food, and lamenting NYC's lack of it. I want to try it, but I won't be making it to the Lone Star state any time soon.
Is there anywhere in NYC that makes good Tex-Mex?

@sloppydelicious: Are you looking for any particular dish? If you just need to get the taco/beans/rice thing out of your system, we like Pinche Taqueria. Again, it may not abide by the Tex Mex laws, but you'll use a lot of napkins and have trouble keeping the burrito fillings inside (always a good sign).

Best Tex Mex in Manhattan and Best Salsa in Manhattan!
At Burrito Box on 9th Avenue and 57th Street
Little hole in the wall place with just a counter to eat at.

My go to dishes:
Grilled Chicken Burrito, sour cream on the side
Steak soft tacos, delicious char broiled steak
ALWAYS get large chips and salsa, if you get delivery, heat up the chips in the microwave before dining

I'm from the South and miss Tex Mex big time. I've found some decent stand-ins but nothing great, so I'm hoping someone can come up with a good suggestion as well! Preferably with some decent refried beans.

Sorry I can't be that helpful, but I have to chime in: this Burrito Box may be delicious (not that I know), but based on those pics/write-ups, it is not Tex-Mex, certainly not what Texans would call Tex-Mex. You're looking for a place with cheese enchiladas and carne guisada. Those are pretty reliable indicators that a place is doing Tex-Mex. If most of what you see on the menu are burritos, tacos, and/or quesadillas, it's probably not Tex-Mex.
I never found any in New York, but that was 5 years ago, and I gave up pretty quickly (Mexican taquerias, they have; not the same thing).
You can try searching on Homesick Texan:

NYC restaurants aren't her focus, but if anyone knows where to find true Tex-Mex in NYC, she would. And she's posted on Serious Eats before too, so maybe we'll be lucky and she'll show up, or hell, you could probably email her.

There is Tex-Mex here, but it's all pretty awful and will make you miss home even more. If you want Mex-Mex, however, just walk along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens and you'll find some decent places. And a recent discovery, which was covered here on SE, is Tortilleria Nixtamal. Great tamales, fish tacos and corn tortillas made from fresh masa--the only place in the city!

We moved from NYC to Austin and my wife misses Blockheads' frozen margaritas!
