Speedy Wedding in Seattle: Help Needed, Please!
Wow! My brother called us on Saturday night to tell us that he is now officially engaged, and I am more than thrilled for him! The trouble is that, since he is being deployed back to Iraq in August, they plan on getting married before he leaves, and at this point, it will likely be over Memorial Day Weekend in Seattle.
Now, being the family of the groom, we have less work, but we are hosting the rehearsal dinner (only about 25 people will attend the wedding - total) and I would love to know if there are any *reasonably-priced* places in Seattle at which to host it. My family is pretty meat and potatoes, and so is hers, so something pretty "standard" would be great.
Also, I know that Duff Goldman learned a lot from a person in Seattle who does wacky cakes. My gift to them (since they have everything else), I hope, is going to be a really fun groom's cake in the style of what Duff does. Trouble is, I haven't the foggiest idea who that person in Seattle is and where their bakery is. Does anyone know?
Again, any help at all would be *greatly* appreciated!

You can try emailing Charm City Cakes to find out who you should use in Seattle:

We're not super cheap but check out Taste at the Seattle Art Museum. We do parties all the time and have a nice room for them. Plus we are really into the local/sustainable angle; most of our product comes from WA/OR.

If your people like Italian food (who doesn't?) try Marcellos on Roosevelt Ave. in North Seattle. Best Italian food in Seattle, a hidden gem, to use an overused phrase. And the atmosphere is perfect for a rehearsal dinner.

I would guess that cake guy you are looking for is Mike's Amazing Cakes www.mikesamazingcakes.com/. I've seen some of his work up close and it truly is amazing.
If you would like to do your rehearsal dinner in your home you might consider a personal chef. A grill or buffet party would be comparable (or less) in price to a restaurant and you can certainly get "meat and potatoes" or whatever else you might like.
P.S. I'm a personal chef www.homeplateschef.com

I'm still thinking of a reccomendation, but I have to disagree with the rec. for Taste @ S.A.M. I don't think they are what you have in mind. Sorry!

hey- follow up, I wasn't saying anything negative about Taste! They are great, but not for what you are looking for!
mhurst826 at 3:28PM on 03/16/09
@mhurst: That is what I was thinking, too, but I would love to try it while I am there, so I will definitely keep it in mind.
@ChefDJen: Thanks! I am not sure how this will work. My family is in MN and hers is in WA, but a home personal chef idea might be exactly what they are looking for. I will let you know, thank you! Also, that's exactly what I was looking for for the cake guy! :)
Thank you for all of the recommendations, and please keep them coming! :)

vios might be a good place, they take big groups, and are affordable with great greek food; they're really family-friendly, so they have mac & cheese and good standards, too. i'm not sure if 25 would be more than they could handle. there's a wide range of restaurants in the international district that could handle that many (if chinese would work for your group).
possibly palace kitchen.
good luck & congratulations!

Try 13 Coins or Icon Grill. Good luck, and I hope you find the best place!

Actually, if you could mention the neighborhood where he lives, it might narrow it down a bit. Fyi, I've heard Palace Kitchen is a good place, but I've never been there. My husband is over "there" flying P-3s for the Navy...thank you to your brother.

@iaspire: I know that he lives near to Fort Lewis, which is actually farther out of Seattle, I guess, called Lacey, but since half of the guests are coming into Seattle from another state (i.e. my family), we were thinking of Seattle proper, since that will be where we will stay. Also, thank you and I wish your husband the best and I hope that he comes back soon!

Hmmm, what about BluWater on lovely Lake Washington? It's pretty meat and potatoes and reasonable, plus it's in a beautiful untouristy part of Seattle, with lots of free parking.

So if he's Ft. Lewis, would you consider Tacoma? I know plans may have already been made, hotel wise, etc. but if everyone stayed in Tacoma, it would actually probably save a lot of time and driving. SeaTac is already South of Seattle. There you could find that it's probably less expensive than Seattle, but downtown Tacoma is still pretty cool. Hotel Murano comes to mind. Although, I understand the magic of Seattle, too. :)
