Sides with fish

I have started trying to eat more fish and need some input on possible side dishes. I think baked oven fries with fried fish (fish 'n' chips) and risotto with "cleaner" styles of fish fillets. What else? I need something substantial - I tend to feel hungry later if I have a side of white rice and salad. Any pastas...what am I missing?

um, lots of vegetables? Some fruit, perhaps? If it's grilling season where you are, do all of it - fish, fries (thick cut), and veggies - on the grill. Or cut up an orange to go next to your fish, grains, and salad. Also, try whole grains - they'll fill you fuller than white rice will and they're more nutritious.

Mix up your grains with a quinoa, bulgur or couscous salad. Eat some heartier vegetables too, like squashes, broccoli and cauliflower and the like. Always yummy to season these with olive oil and whatever herbs go with your fish dish and roast them up.

Make a nice orzo salad -- cook the orzo til al dente then rinse with cold water to stop the cooking and keep them from getting gummy. toss with a nice Italian dressing and some chopped cukes, grape tomatoes, red onion or scallion, feta cheese, salt & pepper, chopped pitted kalamata olives, parsley or even some mint or dill. This would be a refreshing and healthy side, and something different.
I also make a lot of salsas to top grilled fish with -- one that is really good is a couple of drained cans of mandarin orange slices mixed with chopped fresh cilantro and siracha pepper sauce. Zippy and zingy over fried or grilled fish.

In France mashed potato is a regular accompaniment to white fish, and to go alongside some steamed french beans, the smaller the better.

I like to make a fruit salsa to top my fish with for some extra flavor and veggies.

Mac n cheese and baked beans go good with fish.

how about quinoa salad? it is hearty and filling and you can do a huge number of different things to it depending on the way you cooked the fish.

Buy some canned sardines/anchovies/tuna and make a great easy italian dish out of them. Add canned tomotoes, onions, garlic, and chilli flakes to a pan. Heat it up, add the fish, and plate on top of linguine. Don't forget to add parm. cheese!

I love fish served with oven roasted potatoes. Slice some Idaho potatoes thinly lengthwise. Coat with olive oil and roast at 400F for about 20-30 minutes. Season with salt and rosemary. It is filling, yet not too overpowering to pair with fish.

I highly recommend a combo I serve with fish filets and crab cakes. Shred thin some red cabbage and fennel bulb with a sweet onion so its all nice and thin and saute in olive oil with salt and pepper. OMG is it good.

I agree with everyone who mentioned whole grains. Keep the risotto, but make it with brown rice. Or pair it with a side of whole wheat pasta with a sauce to compliment your fish.

Forgot to add the bit about the wife with celiac - gluten-free....sucks

Serve the fish on sauted kale with garlic and a little red pepper.
I also like to grill fish and make a sauce of zucchini, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, anchovies, black olives and capers with pasta.

I love whole wheat couscous with fish, since you can add so many different things to it, but that's not gluten-free. Sorry. Brown rice is very versatile too, though. Roasted potatoes are great with fish (sweet potatoes or spuds). I also like to peel, cube, and steam sweet potatoes, then mash them up with a little butter and whatever seasonings strike me at the time. Mmm-mmm good and very easy.

Vegetables.

Tortillas, salsa, and sides of beans and rice. Are corn tortillas okay for gluten-free? You might need to check the labels or make your own, but fish tacos are a nice change from the usual fish prep.

I'm surprised to see so many whole grain recs, I find them a bit too earthy and heavy to pair with fish. Of course it depends on what sort of fish you are cooking (salmon and

I almost always lost a rice pilaf with seafood (blame it on memories of Red Lobster as a child). I like to keep my sides vegetable based (grilled peppers, zucchini and mushrooms, or sauteed veggies, whatever I've got, perhaps stir-fried with a little mirin and soy) or very lightly dressed starches: angel hair pasta tossed with pesto or some kind of light sauce, or rice noodles or bean noodles tossed with a bit of chili, soy sauce, fish sauce, garlic, cilantro, whatever.

I also like a kind of cheaters pommes Anna, very thinly sliced potatoes tossed with olive oil or melted butter, salt, and onion/garlic (somehow I prefer to use the powders here) and some herbs, then spread in a baking dish and baked until tender and crispy on top.

I love roasted Fennel & Asparagus with Olive Oil, Garlic, Salt, Pepper and a bit of lemon juice.

Definitely some roasted or sauteed veg and a potato dish for starch - or you can mix and do a roasted kale and potato salad with tahini, lemon, garlic...delicious!
I don't find whole grains too heavy for fish...I say as long as the flavors meld, you're good to go

I like to sautee white beans and spinach in garilic and olive oil, grilled white and green asparagus, brown rice and fresh baked bread. Maybe try different rices like wild, black, sushi, basmati. The whole grains tend to have greater satiety I think that's why all the recs.

I like all the suggestions but for me you can't beat cheese grits, cole slaw, fries and hush puppys. (I might be a redneck) ;-) Something also popular in the south (and maybe elsewhere?) is a fish reuben. Fried fish, swiss cheese, cole slaw and 1000 island or russian dressing on rye, grilled nice and toasty of coarse. Probably not gluten friendly but you could always make her a nice grilled fish salad. Good luck in your search.
