Serious Eats: Sex Foods

Over the years, I have often heard people say certain foods are aphrodisiacs. Like oysters for example. Do you believe there are foods that truly make you want to do the wild thing? Tell us what they are! It's spring after all......

61 Comments:

What a naughty question! I don't know, maybe this will make me sound stupid, but the idea that certain foods make you more apt to feel sexual seems like bullshit to me. My boyfriend says I get handsy when I'm drunk, so maybe liquor is the magical elixir.

Champange......I tend to get into a dork mode in more ways then one. That's why I don't drink the bubbley anymore to my sadness.

Candy's dandy, but liquor is quicker, as they say. I've always found this to be true.

@simon -- you took the words right out of my mouth...er...fingers.

I think spicy foods can be stimulating. Especially when they are rubbed on your, um, lips :D

For the most part, I don't think it's the foods themselves, chemically, that cause the excitement, but the ideas and anticipations that they conjure up.

Has anyone tried cooking with Viagra???

simon! I am screaming laughing! You mean like sharing a banana, right?

I did hear viagra doesn't dissolve in stock as well as cialis.

I don't know if simon is joking or not, but you should not be rubbing food on your bits, spicy or otherwise.

Champagne--those tiny bubbles, oh how they sped right to my head!! Ok, ok, I'll stop before I start sounding like Don Ho....

@Simon--cooking with Viagra?? In a cream sauce, maybe? How about Viagra fricassee?

I said lips, not "lips."

@cupcake - "cream sauce", I LOL'ed.

I think a big meal with multiple courses over a long time leads to invariably to more booze and if you eat enough you feel great- making both parties in a better frame of mind for a nitecap!

I once read that almonds, sweet basil, avocados, arugula, bananas, strawberries, raspberries and nutmeg - all have aphrodisiac properties. So for a Valentine's Day, I made a pasta using some of the "love" ingredients.

@simon--You always say some pretty interesting stuff and always makes me laugh....glad to return the favor...

@BiereBeer-If I eat too many courses, even over a long period of time, the only thing I would feel is comatose and that is far from sexy--well, unless one is into necrophilia..HHMM!!??

meat on the bone. no, seriously. stop giggling. i love the primal, caveman quality to eating it...if you're at home where you can use your hands.

Exercise is important as well. I exercise my tongue by tying the stems from the cherries into knots.

No way. I don't believe that's possible.

Don't mean to toot my own horn here, but I once tied 20 cherry stems in knots in less than 30 minutes. There were obviously a lot of shirley temple drinkers around that night.

It is very possible; easy in fact. I've done a double knot.

@stripey ~ That must have been one LONG stem!

Wine makes me....well friendly.

Holy cold shower, what did I walk in on. My husband gets amorous over near anything I make he likes. When I put the food onto plates he rubs his hands together and says oh baby oh baby. I think Mr Tomato's deal was sealed on either the fried chicken or the ravioli and sauage. Breakfast just pushed him over the edge.

Sex is all about the brain. When you feel loved and well received by someone you get comfortable and the stage is set for interactions less casual and more personal. People react the same way around food.
Many people I know do not "eat" in front of people they do not know on a date. When I saw "Nine 1/2 Weeks" that was pretty erotic. Anyone who doesn't think so has got to be kidding.

The thing I make for Mr Tomato, my husband, is chocolate truffles. It was the first handmade gift I ever made for him when we dated and when I make those for him he says it still moves him (insert your own conclusions). That gift to him is as passionate as anything I could give (insert conclusions here) him. I am sure it makes him feel good and what makes Mr Tomato feel good is always good for me. (winks)

I've seen many many things in my day, but I've never seen a cherry stem tied by tongue.

@JerzeeTomato--You always make me smile when you refer to your OH, as "Mr. Tomato"....I love it! Mr. Tomato sure appreciates you...
This was a fun thread no matter how "off the beaten path" it became. After all, life can't be taken too seriously and besides most of you guys (gals) are a fun, articulate, crazy, wonderful bunch! I've come to see that..No matter what Don Luis says!
Anyway, Jerzee, you certainly hit the nail right on the head with everything you wrote..

we have alot of finger food meals, picnic style on the floor. Somehow feeding each other just ignites sparks, of course we've only been together for 4 yrs so everything ignites sparks. (hiding now)

@simon ~ There is still time!

@simon, por vous - How to tie a cherry stem into a know with your tongue, just, you know, in case you want to impress that special someone. :-)

For me there's no such thing as a sex food. What there is is a sex mood. Food is love, food is sensual, the smell, the taste, how it feels in your mouth, it's a very tactile thing. Put you and sweetie together with good food, good music, good smells, it's not exactly a stretch that a little frolicking will be happening later. I've had sexy times (thank you Borat) with everything from Popeye's Fried Chicken to pasta in cream and truffle sauce. It's about the everything, not the one specific food.

Sex on the computer, what a novel idea!

what about carrot? :)

i dont think its really the food but definitly cooking with my hubs makes us both feel romantic... and for sure when booze is involved...

Hot fudge sundae, sans the hot fudge and whipped cream... those are to be brought into the bedroom.... what about the nuts you ask?.... Those come later ; ) Forgive the pun... or not...

@Pavlov just be careful crushed nuts arent on the menu ;-)

I've found that it doesn't matter what you serve as long as you do it naked or semi-naked. If you go this route, be prepared to eat cold food.

Spring does make us extra-frisky-- I highly recommend a surprise bubble bath with two flutes of champagne with cut strawberries inside them. Cliche but a nice one!

I consider chocolate and most seafoods aphrodisiacs. A nice Italian meal with wine, mussels and a chocolate dessert really can't hurt.

Alcohol. Particularly red wine. Boyfriend always laughs because I get flushed and uh, touchy feely. That, however, lasts only a short time because the other effect red wine has on me? Sleep.

My roommate had an unfortunate incident with her BF at the beginning of the year. It involved hot fudge and whipped cream. Well, I'm not sure how they were heating it...but the comforter caught fire and they both ended up with burns on their legs. Oops.

My friend and a guy friend of hers (who has a girlfriend) have forbidden one another from drinking alcohol in the same COUNTY because it will inevitably lead to them making out with one another, and thus the wrath of his girlfriend.

OMG I'm just blushing reading this thread; you guys are naughty!
I find whipped cream (the spray-can kind) to be extra special for extra special evenings.

Happy Springtime! :D

Rent the movie Tampopo if you want to see some food sensuality, plus it's a good film!

TAMPOPO IS THE BEST

Hmm, there are really 2 questions here.

Foods that lead to sex - Remember, the way to a man's heart (and crotch) is through his stomach. And to the stomach via the nose. Just like good perfume can be sensual, I would go with comforting smells. Yeast, like brewed beer and breads. Cinnamon, so cinnamon rolls would cover both. Vanilla. Those are all good smells likely to turn a man amourous.

Food for use during sex - Honey. It is sweet, sticky, and most importantly, a natural anti-biotic, so it won't lead to nasty infections for the ladies. (and I say "for the ladies" in my smarmiest voice possible) Smear it on, lick it off, and go at it! Oh yeah....

one of my favorite cookbooks...Booty Food by Jacqui Malouf

I can personally vouch for the seductive quality of this recipe from Saveur. Though called a salad, it's good hot or cold - I like it hot. Any risotto with saffron is amazingly sensual.

Rose Levy Beranbaum's Chocolate Oblivion Truffle Torte. Eat it with someone you love and make sure there's a soft, accommodating surface nearby.

Lobster Bisque or Mushroom Bisque. A hot fudge sundae from Serendipity.

Hell, a jar of Nutella and a spoon can constitute sex food if you've got the right music and lighting. ;)

@chiffy ~ Actually, ANYTHING Lobster gets my motor running!

@cares951- is that the Jacqui Malouf that used to be on a show with Bobby Flay? She's hot!

what a hilarious discussion! Simply another example of human fixation on sex.
@dmarina: I totally agree about really primal food! Really meaty, gamey, earthy flavors work for me! Goat cheese or even something like a Gloucester. Any rich and rarish meat on the bone, or even off. Really unctuous and heady anything animal-like. Delishhh.
As for a drink, often bourbon does the trick. And of course a good red.
Also I agree with previous comment about complex spices!

@dmcavanagh- it is the same Jacqui!

There is something about a man, eating foods that are described by many as "you just have to have a taste for it" because many aspects of sex are looked at as "its just not my thing" If he likes certain kinds of sushi, foods you cannot pronounce, brussel sprouts, liver, etc..... than YOU KNOW he will be willing to eat heartily from the table of love.

i've always heard--and even kinda felt--that unagi was an aphrodisiac. i have a story which i totally wish was appropriate enough to share here!

other than that, most foods inhibit my sex drive. i never feel sexy when i'm full.

I don't know if this is an Asian thing or Japanese specific, but Chinese soft-shelled turtle is considered to be aphrodisiac.
There are soft-shelled turtle specialty stores, and the one near my grandmother's house has an inappropriate turtle statue in front of the store.
I managed to find a picture by Googling if you are interested.
Unfortunately (?) I haven't tried the turtles, so I don't know how it works.

Whenever I really like a certain dish, I always say that I want to rub it all over my body and have sex with it...is that an unhealthy place to go?

I have an aphrodisiac cookbook called "Intercourses" that I bought at a party because of the gorgeous photography (really!!!) because I don't really believe in aphrodisiacs chemically, more the sensual experience of food. But now I'm less sure, as several things originating in that book have gotten me into trouble without anyone even knowing where they came from.

the most sexual organ of a male is between his legs, for a woman, it's between her ears. if some of you males don't learn to understand this, you're doomed to locking yourself in the bathroom and doing it yourself.

Have you seen the movie ( "Tom Jones" from the 60s?) with that marvelous eating scene? Maybe it is not what you eat, but how you eat it?

olddad is 100% right, womans brain is the basis for the sex drive. convince her that champagne and lobster will make her hot and it will work. old chef

how about a blindfolded chocolate tasting? i recommend Dagoba tasting sized squares...

I'm sure it says something about me, that this is the first time I am logging on to leave a comment! I belly laughed at the cherry stem postings...I entertained far too often in the pub of the restaurant my (ex) owned with my stem tying abilities. Two knots was my max! I have found that personally any food can be an aphrodisiac under the right circumstances....mood, your companion, atmosphere, ambiance, wine (have to stay away from the whiskey) or cocktails, just as long as I have been in on the cooking! It is the preparation that is sensual in my personal world.....

I can think of a handful off the top of my head: Pomegranate, bananas, celery (for females), peach (more for the vitamins & minerals than the shape), herbs -- basil, black pepper, cloves, ginger, cardamom...the list goes on.

Did anyone see "Last tango in Paris"?

I think that dry spicy red peppers do it for me. One time I went into a pepper shop in Italy and was sampling the different products. Immediately after I was all over my boyfriend (at the time). Certainly increases circulation.

Raw oysters. After 2 or 3 dozen, it's like a monster gets in me! I can go till I drop.
