Rant: 10% Tax on restaurant meals in D.C.!

Always enjoy visiting 'The Beltway' and taking in some of the better restaurants in D.C. This last visit included a fine fish dinner at long-running Kinkead's and once we received our bill I noticed a whopping 10% tax added...after checking I was told that Washington, D.C. now imposes a 10% tax on restaurant meals and on premise liquor consumption. It's too much, no? How far do the powers that be think the consumer will go? How does your city or town fare with dining out taxes?

DC restaurant tax has been 10% for longer than I've been working in restaurants. Which is 7 years now. I'm just sayin.

I find the OPs user name to be very apropos for this thread. :)

DC's income tax base is small. Thousands of people come into the District just to work, shop, and dine, and the District has to have some way to fund the services they provide. You could argue that they don't do a good job providing services, but that's a topic for a different blog.

I agree - Washington DC is not a fair benchmark for other cities (in any way shape or form).

But yeah lets let the government take more of our money, I am so fed up with the complacency of the American public and the amount that is stolen from our wallets every year. Our government has become a huge charity that mandates its citizens fund the gravy train. I think charity should be a personal option not a mandate. Sorry for the political rant, but lets throw some damn tea in the harbor!!

Shoot! In Virginia the tax on restaurant food is as high as 11.5% depending on the city. When I was shopping around for reception sites I was appalled at the the thought of several thousands of dollars in food and beverages and then 21% gratuity and then 11.5% tax...and the gratuity was also taxed. This was in the cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Williamsburg. In Richmond, the tax was 11% and gratuity could not be taxed.
I live in Indianapolis, IN now and the sales tax in restaurants is 9%. Retail tax is around 7%, but groceries are not taxed.

I hate to tell you but we don't pay that much tax. Canada and UK and most of europe pay HUGE amounts of tax. Google the word VAT. We don't have half the damn benefits of those who live and work in europe.
I don't see how anyone could think we are funding a charity for anyone but freaking AIG and everyone's illegitimate children. I want some of that tax money spent on teaching some of these welfare people a trade.
It is everyone's responsibility to feed the population I just happen to think they need to WORK for it.

As someone who lives in DC, I agree that 10% tax sucks.

Also what sucks? Not having any representation in congress.
