Must Eat Restaurants
Me and my husband are visiting from Chicago and have dined at many many good food establishments. What are some must eats in New York? We were there last summer and went to the usual suspects: Zabars, Carnegie Deli, Luppa, Momofuku Noodle Bar, Buddah Lounge. Just trying to find some ideas. It's so hard because there are so many places.

As far as mid-priced restaurants go, I'm a fan of Pylos (Greek), Sushi Yasuda (sushi), BLT Prime (the popovers are so good), Momofuku Ssam and Milk Bar, and Terroir.
Some old time New York spots you could try: Yonah Schimmel (knishes), Russ and Daughters and Grimaldi's (pizza in Bklyn).

Try the small hole in the walls:
For awesome pork sandwiches, go to Porchetta. For amazing Venezualan, go to Caracas Arepa Bar. If you want great, cheap food (wraps, sandwiches, even meat and cheese plates) and love beer, head to Blind Tiger.
But if you want to splurge, I had one of my best meals ever at Gotham Bar & Grill. Also, Devi is not your typical Indian restaurant and has some interesting dishes in a great atmosphere.

Maybe this guide needs to be a permanently sticky topic in Talk:NY?

Must eats? lotsa criteria (price, food type, borough). but here's a Brooklyn list:
Ginos in Bensonhurst (Italian fabulsousness)
World Tong in Bensonhurst (Cantonese, dim sum)
Applewood, Park Slope (local, farm based cuisine)
Royal Crown Bakery, Bensonhurst (Ok, not a restaurant, but their prosciutto bread is a meal and the best)
Wing Wagon, Park Slope/Prospect heights (again, not a restaurant, per se, but damn, the wings are kickin')

So how is Good Fork? What about Morimoto?

I'm suggesting Manhattan only things here. It's still worth going to Katz if you haven't been there or Second Ave Deli, if only for the plates of pickles and coffee they serve. I'm partial to Essa for bagels, Corner Bistro for the grilled cheese, French Roast for the grilled chicken over mixed greens, and Johns on Bleeker, Two Boots or Patsy's for pizza. If you want more upscale, I could go to Nobu every day of my life and never be disappointed.

Good Fork is disappointing. Go to Buttermilk Channel instead, if you're Brooklyn-bound! It's the thoroughly delicious new kid on the Carroll Gardens block.
Convivio in Tudor City (midtown Manhattan) for a splurge.
