Going to Milan, Genoa and Cinque Terre

Thanks to airline sales,I will soon be luck enough to visit Milan, Genoa, and Cinque Terre!

So what say ye, serious eaters- where are the best places to eat?

7 Comments:

Almost a decade ago we honeymooned in Cinque Terre----this was before it became as trendy as it has been more recently, so it's possible that it's a bit more commercialized now? Anyhow, I cannot remember any of the specific restaurants, but there was one right near the beach in Riomaggiore that was a fun view, and of course, seafood is good almost anywhere. I would also suggest taking full advantage of all the lemons that are in the 5 cities---they grow lemons there so many of the dishes contain them. There were also lots of lemon food products (not just Lemoncello!): lemon honey, lemon olive oil, etc.

Places to eat in Genoa:

Da Gaia (excellent meat and pasta dishes) http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187823-d1020288-Reviews-Da_Gaia-Genoa_Italian_Riviera.html

Osteria di Vico Palla (the best spot for authentic Genovese cuisine) http://www.vicopalla.it/

Il Funicolare (the only place for good pizza in Genoa, and be sure to try the farinata- a local specialty. Salty flat snack bread made with chickpea flour) http://www.cookaround.com/yabbse1/showthread.php?t=10725

Any small, hole-in-the-wall Foccacieria. The foccacia in Genoa is unlike anything they sell in the US.

I tre merli (this is a great enoteca, aka wine bar, for a nice wine selection) http://www.itremerli.it/

Il squarciafico http://www.squarciafico.it/ (another spot for traditional genovese dishes, centrally located

I hope this helps! I have not returned to Genoa for a few years now, but I did some quick seraches online to make sure these places are current. Have a wonderful time! Sono tanto gelosa!

OMG you're in Italy, I don't think you can find a bad place! Try the house "vino" everywhere you go!! Ciao!

We stayed in Vernazza in the CT. We ate at the restaurant perched inside the lighthouse/castle thing at the very end of town, right on the water--I think it's called Belforte. Food was good, wine was better, view was best. The next night we had a fabulous dinner at a restaurant along the main drag. It think it was called Trattoria da Sandro. The trofie (a local potato/pasta dish thing) with pesto was awesome. We had dessert at Trattoria Gianni Franzi. The tiramisu... words can't even describe how transcendent it was paired with the local dessert wine called sciacchetrà. Holy lord it was good! We also had breakfast coffee, drinking chocolate and pastries at Il Pirata at the top of town. Molto buono!
Ok, I'm jealous. Can I come too?

I had one of the best meals of my life when we visited Cinque Terre. We actually stayed in Chiavari, which is a very short train ride north, and more reasonably priced that staying in CT. The apartment we rented was in the hills above the town. While taking a walk the morning of Easter Sunday, we stumbled upon what looked like an old barn with lots of people waiting around outside. Turns out the place had been converted into a restuarant serving a special 8 course prix fixe Easter meal for about 40 euro per person. The food was incredible, and the atmosphere was beautiful- very dark and rustic I think 400 year old barn. I can't remember the name of the restuarant, but I think it was technically in a town called Leivi. If you can find it, you have to go!!

Cinque Terre is definitely the most exciting part of the trip... okay it's all exciting but the CT is not just another big city. We are staying in La Spezia.

Thanks for all your advice and I will be back (in June) with a report!
