Budget and Vegetarian Friendly?
I'm a teacher looking for good places to eat in the city (preferably uptown or the east side) that are easy on the wallet and have good options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Any suggestions?

How about Patsy's on 2287–91 First Av (near 118th). Awesome and very reasonably priced pizza, among other typical pizzeria fair.
For future reference, check out SuperVegan. Here you'll be able to find a large variety of Vegan/Veg friendly restaurants.

Hcow has a list of vegetarian restaurants around the world. I also mention here a few vegetarian restaurants I have tried in my visits to NYC...
You could try - Viva Pizza with locations on the Upper West Side and Union Sq areas.
I also visited Josie's on 3rd Ave and 36st - it's not vegetarian, but it has amny vegetarian-friendly items on the menu. Even vegan/dairy-free items too.

I am a vegetarian on a MEAN budget and I highly recommend VENESSA'S DUMPLINGS on East 14th. I think it's between 2nd and 3rd. It's not all vegetarian, but I totally was not short on recession-friendly choices :-)

If you make it downtown (all east side), try: Counter and Bread - the first of which is all veg, in the East Village; the latter is a cool and affordable Italian spot with great paninis, pastas and salads, many of which are veg, in Nolita.
For lighter (and sweeter!) bites, try Teany and Babycakes on the LES.

Candle Cafe on Third and 75th-ish is by no means cheap, but the food is awesome - I usually can fill up on an appetizer, like the veggie chili.
Alternately, if you can travel to the village, Quantum Leap is by far the best budget vegetarian/vegan place I have tried in the city. Friendly service too.

new branch of Moustache on Lexington at around 102 or 101. Delicious moroccan food, lots of vegetarian options.
Taksim - Turkish on 1st ave in the 50s. Tasty & friendly.
most NYC sushi places offer lots of vegetarian roll options, including (usually) one giant roll that has the better part of a garden salad stuffed in it...these are often quite inexpensive.

Just visit Lexington Ave and 20th-30rth St. You'll find plenty of great veggie friendly Indian restaurants. Try Pongal.
