Breakfast at Union Square Greenmarket?

We'll be in NYC (from Chicago) this coming weekend. I'd like to visit the Union Square Greenmarket on Monday morning. Husband is less enthusiastic What can I entice him there with for breakfast - we can eat breakfast there, can't we?

In the neighborhood, not at the market, of course!

I've never been impressed with Greenmarket baked goods. What I highly recommend is a stop at City Bakery beforehand (18th between 5/6th Aves, much closer to 5th). Pretzel croissants, muffins, scones, hot chocolate, tarts, deliciousness. He should be lulled into a pleasant stupor and you can easily get him to the Greenmarket.

Don't expect any seating areas or cafes at the greenmarket itself- it's just a bunch of stands selling vegetables, and the baked goods aren't anything to write home about. There is a good bread stand, Bread Alone, but they just sell loaves of bread. Grab breakfast at City Bakery and then walk around the market and buy some vegetables. You can sit in Union Sq afterwards if it's warm enough.

I went this past Friday and the selection was very limited. A friend told me Saturdays are more active and full of options... The weather is still a bit chilly to eat outside, but I agree with the recos above and have breakfast elsewhere near.

Chat N' Chew is fun, opens at 10 a.m. Also, 71 Irving for coffee, treats, and good people watching on a charming little street.

there is a very basic diner on the corner of university place and 12th street.

and if you're coming in from the east side, Amai is a good place too, for tea and snacks

If you want to be in Union Square you might as well eat in Union Square!
I recommend Coffee Shop in Union Square. Union Square West and 16th Street. The coffee is fine. Eye Candy waitresses and good American-Brazilian food. They are open at around 8am, just steps from the market.

You could swing by the Momofuku Milk Bar for some egg-topped pork buns, Stumptown coffee, and outrageous baked goods.

It's within reasonable walking distance of the Greenmarket (it's at 2nd Ave and 13th St), and if you go there first, hubby will be able to endure your vegetable quest a bit longer.

Thanks everyone.. I am now armed (with excellent intel) and ready to check out the veggies!
