Arthur Ave/Little Italy in the Bronx
Hi there! Happy Friday.
Am looking for some good restaurant suggestions for Italian food (vegetarian friendly, if possible) around Arthur Ave/Little Italy in the Bronx. Also, is this a better area to explore during the day for lunch or at night for dinner?
Thanks!

Not exactly on Arthur Ave- but in Morris Park, there is a restaurant called Patricia's- they make excellent brick oven pizza, amongst other italian pastas and whatnot. Really good... the whole neighborhood has great italian food- a fantastic deli (Ann Claire) and Emilio's for excellent regular NYC pizza. It's a cute little neighborhood, lots of Italian families that have lived there for years.
Patricia's and Emilio's are both right on Morris Park ave, you'll recognize it if you've seen the movie 'Summer of Sam'!

Telaviv, if you go during the day the all the food shops and indoor market around the Arthur Ave. neighborhood will be open. I do agree with jcrowne's suggestion of Mario's or Dominick's, both legendary spots...in fact, recent visitors to Mario's have included none other than Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse even Sirio Macchione of Le Cirque. A hint: if you go to Mario's they served one of the best pizzas in the area but you have to request it since it is not usually on the menu...

Word of warning about Dominick's is that they don't have a menu, they just tell you what they've got on that particular day, so the choices might be limited for a vegetarian. They will have all the usual antipasti and contonri, and they often have an eggplant dish to choose from as a main. Their stuffed artichoke is a fave, but I don't remember if it has meat... It's a great experience, all the tables are communal, the food is pretty decent and you will get a real dose of New York Italian American.
In general I prefer to go to Arthur Ave. during the day because the best part about the Belmont nabe is all the shopping, more so than the restaurants really. Don't miss the covered market, Teitel Brothers, Madonia Brothers, Borgati's, among others. they've got a bunch of good wine, cheese and seafood shops. The grocery stores are very well stocked and pretty cheap for lots of things, we used to go every other week or so when I was growing up.

Emelia's for a fancier, more Northern Italian experience, Dominick's for a red sauce, family style experience (you might have to share a table, though not food, with strangers). I love both restaurants - I grew up nearby.
Egiziana's Bakery is excellent - my family has been going there since before I was born. It's worth a walk for dessert. It's off Arthur Ave on 187th St.

Just got to the market - Mikes is fab and if you want vegetarian, get the broccoli rabe frittata hero. One of my all time favorites. Grab a soda and you've got local atmosphere and great food. Not fancy, but cheap and delicious.

Yes, in the indoor market (at the back) there is the most AMAZING pizza stand. GO and enjoy every morsel.
