What do you put in your oatmeal?

If I have time, I really like cooking up a bowl of steel cut oats, which I then eat plain and unadulterated, because I love their flavor and texture. However, when I don't have the time and don't think about cooking the oats in advance (which happens a lot), I still enjoy rolled oats. Though I sometimes eat them plain, I'll also sometimes add other food. I've done peanut butter, applesauce and raisins, dried cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, cinnamon, different types of nuts, and today I got the idea to try ginger (which I am eating now and think is fantastic, by the way). Sometimes milk goes in, sometimes not. I've added flax seed, but didn't think that added much as far as taste goes. Lafayette, CO holds an annual oatmeal festival where they offer a topping bar with 150(!) toppings, ranging from fruit (fresh, dried, and sweetened like pie filling) to candy to nuts and seeds to whatever else they think you might want in your oats, which opened my eyes to just how creative you can really be. So what do you like in your oatmeal? (And yes, I'll probably be stealing ideas. I'm totally on an oatmeal kick right now.)

Ah, my bad. I'm new to the site and probably should have actually used the search function. Mods, feel free to lock/delete.

Oh here we go, i can here my mother nagging at me while I write this.
Brown sugar
Butter
Whole milk or cream
Chocolate chips
Mix it up and eat.

Brown sugar and butter.

I always cook my oats with milk and make it a bit creamier than most. In the end I stir is some butter and brown sugar. On occasion, in will go a fist of raisins.

Zante currants and brown sugar

Craisins and splenda with milk.

grade b maple syrup and pecans or walnuts.

soymilk, ground flaxseed, and different combo's of dried fruit

I always put the oatmeal in the water/milk before bringing it to the boil to make it creamier - I am guilty of a) adding a pinch more salt, b) brown sugar, c) butter and d) bit of whole milk - it is so good - I know I have not chosen the healthiest add-ins, but to me these are hands down the best tasting and quickest and my blood sugars remain stable throughout the a.m., so it is all good. . . isn't it?

steel cut oatmeal and boiled only in milk with a pinch of salt..add ins would include, butter and brown sugar with a little milk--I like my oatmeal thick, not runny..or I put in strawberry preserves....I do this with cream of wheat also...
Once I mixed fruit yogurt with oatmeal....interesting consistancy & tastes good but I have to be in the mood for that combo!

After the...was it the Bittman piece? I've been eating it with soy sauce, scallions, a drop or two of sesame oil and a few wee cubes of summer sausage. Like a poor man's congee...though I always thought congee was the poor man's congee.

To the oatmeal in the pot -

brown sugar
raisins (to plump)

waiting in the bowl -

dash cinnamon
a small handful slivered almonds
dried cranberries (alternative to raisins)

Over the top of it all -

splash of vanilla rice milk
dash of ground flax seed

Brown Sugar!

I always have soy milk in my oats. I make rolled oats in the microwave with a little water so that it is really thick when it cooks, and then thin is out with cold soy milk after it is cooked. I don't like it with anything else.

a touch of cinnamon, vanilla and walnuts mixed in. a touch of brown sugar and a bit of butter on top...mmmm!

walnuts, ground flax seed, blueberries and agave nectar........oh so good!

1 1/2 oz. fat free cream cheese,it makes the oatmeal sooo creamy, then some sliced strawberries !

Fresh fruit, whatever is in season

Brown sugar and cinnamon

Chopped dried dates

Of course, any of the above must be served with cold milk and a pinch of salt.

Ooh, some of these sound tasty!

@pjracz and @bareneed, oatmeal itself is really healthy...so what's a few unhealthy add-ins? Can't beat yourself up over that! Or let your mom nag you up for that matter!

@BananaMonkey, that sounds really interesting. Do you cook the soy sauce with the oatmeal or add it afterward?

And now I'm totally trying vanilla in my oatmeal. Not sure if I'm going to go with extract, vanilla soy/rice/almond milk, or vanilla yogurt, but it must go in now...

I make steamed rolled oats. I add flax seed, walnuts, craisins, prunes, a little sugar, and OJ.

A dash of Splenda, some blueberries, cherries and strawberries and a good sprinkling of mixed seeds.

Splenda, cinnamon, tablespoon of ground flax (better than the whole stuff), bit of pumpkin, splash of milk for creaminess, and a spoon of peanut butter than melts into the mix as you stir the spoon around. If I'm really feeling naughty, I'll add a few choco chips :)

i make my oatmeal really dry so its pretty solid. then drizzle a little soymilk over the top, sprinkle with sugar and raisins. pretty simple i guess but im picky about the consistancy and the amount of soymilk :) this is instant quaker oatmeal we're talking too, flavor of some kind... and if you make it like i do where its unstirrable when youre done, theres always a little salty pocket somewhere thats really tasty to find :)

Make it with half milk, half water. Add just a small amount of light brown sugar, pinch of salt, Mexican vanilla - or a few drops orange oil - lots of cinnamon, dried cranberries and chopped walnuts. De-lish.

I cook it with water, skim milk & a little buttermilk--make a big pot so there's enough for the week (I actually like it better reheated the next day, when it's much thicker and chewier). I usually eat it with natural PB, sliced banana, and a little splenda, honey, or agave. Sometimes some cinnamon. And always a splash of soymilk.

I make mine with milk, and add dried cranberries and a pinch of ground cardamon.

@cycorider--I put a bit of soy in while cooking, but also garnish with some extra soy to taste. I think this just looks aesthetically pleasing. you Can also mix in some scallions while about half way cooked and add a few more on top as garnish. the Summer sausage i put in at the beginning, to leach out good flavour.

sweet- either a tea spoon of choco powder and a few flakes of dried chilli.
Savoury- some cheese, stiring in so i semi melts (great after a workout, carbs + protein!)

A tablespoon or two of pumpkin puree and some brown sugar with vanilla extract and cinnamon...topped with dried cranberries, almonds, and a splash of soymilk.

Just had a bowl a few hours ago!

Vanilla soy milk, then cooked until it's a hard ball, pressed into the bowl and topped with sliced banana. My wife won't eat it any other way.

Craisins,raisins.sunflower seeds,wheat germ and blueberries.

I like a little bit of brown sugar and milk on mine. Sometimes, for a treat, I add grated apple and cinnamon. :)

I love oatmeal. I would put nutela, chocolate chips with orange zest, cinnamon and brown sugar...anything really. Depends if you like it sweet or savory. Its all good though :)

brown sugar, bannana, blueberries, skim milk

Brown sugar, maple syrup & butter.

dried cherries, cream, pistachios, cardamom, brown sugar. If it's really cold out and I want to be escapist, diced dried mango and papaya, add some coconut milk and a little palm sugar if there's any around.

honey, plain yogurt, pecans, frozen fruit or dried cranberries.

Here's what goes in the pot - and its order:

1/3 cup Whole Oatmeal (not instant but "minute" is OK)
1/4 cup Unprocessed bran (don't ask)
Pinch of Salt
1 1/2 cup Milk (might add more depending on thickness of final product)
Cinnamon
1 sm diced fresh apple OR handful fresh Blueberries OR Blackberries
Palmful of dried fruit (such as craisins, raisins, diced apricots)
Cook till done
Top with wheat germ
Squirt of honey

Blueberries. All year round. I freeze bags of them when they're in season.

My two favorite variations are blueberries (when fresh are in season) and raw sugar and half and half, or raisins toasted sliced almonds or pecans, raw sugar, and half and half.
Sometimes I cook dried cranberries in with the steel cut oats. That's great too!

Soymilk, blueberries, cinnamon, and peanut butter

@cycorider--oatmeal not really healthy?! What kind are you eating? I eat steel-cut, and am given to understand it's one of the healthiest foods. Am I wrong?

@BobbieAnne, no, oatmeal is very healthy. In fact, my post reads that it's healthy enough that you shouldn't feel guilty about adding some unhealthy add-ins.

Walnuts, raisins, dried cranberries, maple syrup, and a dash of cinnamon. Heaven!

warm milk, brown sugar, granola and few raisins. The best is @ Urth Cafe in Los Angeles!

steel cut oats cooked overnight in a slow cooker with low fat milk and topped with a lightly poached egg. yum.

I put eveeerryything in my oatmeal. Bananas, milk, flavored peanut butter- esp. dark chocolate peanut butter, cinnamon, apples, dried cranberries, raisins, yogurt, trail mix, blueberries, agave nectar, strawberries, strawberry milk, chocolate milk, peanut butter, carrots (for a carrot-cake like oatmeal with yogurt for frosting), vanilla, silk/rice nog, silk creamer, nuts, yogurt covered fruit, maple syrup, slivered almonds, apple sauce, pumpkin, honey, cherries, pineapple, crumbled cookies-esp graham crackers, chocolate chips, wheat berries, flax seed...etc.

... what can I say? I like to experiment. XP

I had oatmeal for dinner tonight. Steel cut oats w/cinnamon, dried cherries, toasted walnuts, a pat of butter and a little bit of maple syrup.

I love oatmeal, and will one day be brave enough to try Mark Bittman's Savory Oatmeal. @bananamonkey - I'm assuming since you're on a kick eating it that it's good?

just this morning I put in grapenuts (in the last minute or so of cooking the oatmeal) and then fresh apple, walnuts, bit of brown sugar and splash of milk - perfection!

Maple syrup always...sometimes a bit of milk or cream. If I feel daring some cinnamon or fruit jam. Same add-ins go for cream of wheat :)

@cycorider--my bad; tweaky, tired-eyes to blame. Never read nummy food posts after grading 73 bad freshmen papers...

cinammon, brown sugar, sliced almonds and golden raisins.

Dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Tried apricots are awesome in it, especially if you also use nutmeg and cinnamon. Old bananas are good.

Sometimes maple syrup, sometimes brown sugar. I baked some oatmeal last week using a recipe found in SE comments awhile ago and with nutmeg, brown sugar, maple syrup, almonds and apricots it was fantastic. It reminded me of an oatmeal cookie, only better. I often pour vanilla yogurt on top of my oatmeal and it's been great on the baked oatmeal.

Oatmeal is good for cleaning out the dried fruit, nuts and seeds from the pantry.

I like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove on my oatmeal. Mix in some molasses, some dried or candied ginger, and some pumpkin puree and you've got pumpkin pie oatmeal.

Oh, and it's good for using up pumpkin pie spice mix for something other than pie. That mix always used to make me sad that I bought it, since I don't bake pumpkin pies every day. (now the better question should be, why DON'T I bake a pumpkin pie every day.)

There's so many things I love in oatmeal: almond milk, apple sauce, chocolate covered cocoa nibs, bananas, nuts, granola... :)

I have just discovered the greatest combination for oatmeal. I add yogurt to my oatmeal. It tastes wonderful, especially with yoplait mixed berry or strawberry yougurt. Hope you try it an love it!!!!

Sweet: My favorite is banana cooked in with the oatmeal, then add a spoonful each of jam and peanut butter. It's PBJ oatmeal.
Savory: Top oatmeal with salsa, hot sauce, egg over-medium and season salt. Sometimes avocado too.

oh my gosh that oatmeal fest sounds AMAZING! i love oatmeal so much, and i love experimenting with it. its so versatile! my favorite thing to do is to mix in fresh pureed pumpkin or sweet potato with maple and brown sugar and raisins, and spice wise i add ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg ...

mmm

you have got to try it! :)

ps - thanks for the tips about pancakes on my post, i have managed to make fat free pancakes as well, but i would love to see your recipe for it! mine usually only turn out just okay
