Traveling to Portugal: What food can't I miss?

Will be going to portugal in April for a short first time visit. What are some local foods/specialties I HAVE to try?

I'm a little wary of salted and dried cod, but will definitely give it a chance. Anything else?

And suggestions of places to go are more than welcome. Thanks!

Vinho Verde! Lots and lots of Vinho Verde! Crisp, clean tasting refreshing young white wine, goes great with sooo many things...

Caldo Verde - wonderful soup made with linguica, potatoes and kale.. actually anything made with linguica or chourico... mmmmmm

There are some lovely cheeses, especially the ones made with sheep or goat milk...

Also some wonderful little pastries... Pastels d'Belem (aka Pastels d'Nata), queijadas... mmmmmm mmmmm mmmmmm

I hope you like fish!! Dont forget to bring home some Fleur De Sal the best sea salt on earth!!!

Yes, lots of yummy fish (be prepared to see the head still attached).

Caldo verde is fantastic if it's a cold rainy day.

Kale soup, cacoila or bifana sandwiches, malassadas, queijadas, port wine, Sumol (soda made from fresh pineapple) pasteis de nata, a good cozido (a giant boiled dinner with lots of great meats and vegetables), alcatra, and sweet bread (pao doce) - boy oh boy, there's a lot of great stuff to eat, and this list is just some of the highlights! As you might be able to infer, I'm Portuguese! :)

Honestly it depends on where you go. If your in Port Wine region, you wont find better. If your in the area nothing beats Maderia wine if you like it strong and sweet. I will agree with the others, fresh kale soup, local sausages, lingucia being my favorite. Anything pork, some of the best pork dishes I have ever had come from portugal, and dont be afriad of seafood dishes with pork or lingucia. I grew up in New Bedford, MA and grew up with the food, and I miss it every day.

Yeah these are all excellent choices, If I can add to the list I would say Grilled Sardines, If you go to Madeira I would recommend the espetada, which is basically beef shish kabob, but they are served with fried polenta which is pronounced "mealu". Do not ask me how to spell it. Also if you are up north in the Porto region make sure you have some tripe.

Excuse me, while I wipe the bit of drool from the corner of my mouth. Thanks so much everyone! I will definitely be taking some notes with me over there.
