Tappy Hat Fuesday! Fave Paczki Flavor?

What's your favorite flavor of paczki? My own two faves are raspberry and prune. And if you're only in here to rant about the packi's fat and calorie content, yer missin' the point of a day called FAT Tuesday! ;-)

I love malasadas w/o any filling. :)

What is paczki, I never even heard of it? Happy Fat Tuesday to all.

We always called the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday Shrove Tuesday. According to wikipedia, that is an Irish, UK and Australian tradition. Of course, it's called Mardi Gras in New Orleans and many other things in other parts of the world that usually translate to Fat Tuesday. The PA Dutch call it Fasnacht Day and it is a day for eating all the fried donuts you can handle. Some also call it pancake day. What is paczki?

Hey Perkster! It is a Polish donut, filled with something sweet. My brother's wife makes them every year.

izzy ~ you've been missed!!! I thought it sounded Polish. Gosh darn & golly gee whiz, sure wisht I had me a donut on donut day. I like those sour cream cakey donuts with powdered sugar, and a yeasty light donut frosted with chocolate. Oh, and those sugar and cinnamon twists - do they still make those? No filling for me.

Thanks for the info and don't be a stranger.

@LPC ~ Fappy Tat Huesday to you, too!

When I saw this post I wondered if it was someone in, close to, or from Northern Indiana. I was darn close as I believe LPC is in southern Michigan, no?

I've seen paczki (according to the package it is pronounce POONCH-key. Really??) but never tried one. Maybe this will be the year!

I am curious to know iwhat other parts of the country know about paczki. Good post LPC!

we have a bakery that does them up -- they're HUGE! raspberry and prune sound fine with me..... what a treat....

One of the supermarkets in St. Louis intro'd them a few years ago. Our German and French heritage hadn't brought them in. But I don't see the difference, at least in the ones sold here, between them and regular jelly doughnuts. Is there any when they're "properly" done?

Bavarian cream or Raspberry!

Prune!!
I lived for ages in the very Polish Northern Indiana and so for me Fat Tuesday is Paczki day for me! Better than pancakes!
I only like the prune and apricot, otherwise I feel like I am just eating a filled donut that I could get any other time of the year. I will be making some tonight.

The paczki recipe tends to have more fat, sugar, eggs and milk than a traditional donut, and is heavier. They are used just like pancakes or other sweet breads on this day to use up the dairy in preparation for lent.

And yes, they are pronounced "Poonch-key".

I'm Polish and my grandma always made pancakes on Fat Tuesday though, never paczki. However I love the prune ones! And there is nothing like a trip to Hamtramck (MI) for some really authentic Polish paczki . Our local news station was just doing their annual story from one of the bakeries. The average paczki has close to 500 calories of deep-fried, filled goodness and 25-30 grams of fat.

@AuntJone: It's called a number of different things depending on which country you go to and which ethnicity is prevalent, as it's not a unique pastry eaten before Lent.

I intimately know the Portuguese version, the malasada, which traditionally does not have filling (the way I like it as I mentioned above) because the Portuguese introduced it in Hawaii. However, I do not eat them for the same reason and associate them with carnivals and festivals because they are made all year round because of their popularity. These days, one can find them with bavarian cream and other flavors, too, but not in my greasy bag.

Walk into any grocery store here, you'll see the box printed with 4 or more different descriptives for them.

Pudding or custard filling is my all-time favourite, but I've com to like raspberry as well. Mmmm...paczki...

I haven't really had an authentic paczki. I've only had those from the supermarket and really haven't tasted like much...the bottoms of the donuts get wet and soggy from laying out all day and the donut itself has a cake-like consistancy that breaks apart easily. I was hoping it had a "zeppole" like bite to it....It also had a little teeny, tiny filling of what I believe was raspberry..I was very disappointed...
Is there a difference between that and a donut? If they tasted better, I would think I would like bavarian cream and prune-since I like Boston cream donuts and love prune danish!!.
I'd be willing to try it again but maybe one from a Polish market.

I brought some bavarian cream and raspberry paczki home and my husband nearly cried. He's polish and misses his grandma, his favorite cook.

@Sadiepix- you must have lived in South Bend/Mishawaka! I live an hour south and that's the only reason I know of packzi. They are available in stores around here. I think I'd rather make the trip north and try to find a fresh one though.

In St Louis try the Paczki at Helfers Pastries...they are as authenic as any I have ever had!! They are overstuffed with filling
