Specialty Mexican Market in NYC?

Hi ya'll. I'm originally from the Southwest but I have lived in NYC for several years now. While NY has myriad specialty markets from Spanish to Thai, I have yet to find a Mexican specialty market. I often want to cook certain recipes that call for a particular queso, or chili, or spice, that up to this point have been impossible for me to find in the city. Please help! Do you guys know where you can buy authentic Mexican produce and ingredients in NY? Even a place to buy something as simple as good queso fresco or achiote? Thank you!

There is a great little market on manhattan ave in greenpoint- not mexican per se, (I think more El Salvadorian) but they have achiote, good queso fresco, a myriad of dried peppers- plus great prices on staple produce such as tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, onions, cactus, etc.

Thank you! Do you know the cross street perhaps?

I go to Zaragoza but only because it's in my neighborhood:
215 Ave A
New York, NY 10016
(212) 780-9204

I bet Essex Street Market would work too:

It's just over the border from the Bronx in New Rochelle, N.Y. and it's one of the best, reasonably-priced Mexican/Spanish markets in the area. It's called: Viva Grande Farm, 38 Centre Ave., N.R. (914-576-9235). Many area chefs forage thru early in the day...It has what you want (produce, meat dept., cheeses, etc.) and may be worth an occasional trip up from the city to stock up.

Thank you guys, those are great suggestions.

Manhattan Ave in between Huron and Green

The Bravo Supermarket and Associated Market in Jackson Heights have both an awesome variety and some of the freshest chiles and quesos in NYC.

Yeah, I second Bravo (also one in Astoria, on 34th Ave) and actually many of the Trade Fair locations in Queens have excellent selections.

Oh, how I miss Kitchen / Market in Chelsea!

Essex Market often has a good selection of herbs and chiles, although they're not so great for Mexican cheese - sometimes you need to ask for something (my constant is epazote) if they don't have it sitting out
