Serious Complaint: Chex Mix
Has anyone else noticed that the box backs are now pretty much microwave recipe only? This has proven to be more annoying to me than I think it should be. True a quick google has yielded the desired proportions and oven directions I wanted - but STILL!

I ran into that this year too. I think that 1 of the three boxes still had the oven recipe.

My complaint is that I like to eat Wheat Chex for breakfast, and you can only get them in small boxes, meant for Chex Mix, which are not very economical.

It seems as though they're only in that size because they're heavier - if you look at the net weight in ounces, it's more than the same-sized box of Rice or Corn.

Come now - is this really a serious complaint?

I have not bought a box this year to make the mix but a I saw a Tv commercial on that had the person making the Chex in the microwave and I growled at the TV and said never in a million years I would make the mix that way. I think my recipe is in the oven at a low degree for an hour or so, that is what makes the yummy taste of it. Not nuke it in less then a minute.

I think it's a serious situation when a company decides to completely obliterate a tradition like baking chex mix in the oven. Some people don't need/use/want microwaves and enjoy the real heat of an oven. This would be akin to every recipe writer leaving out the words "firmly packed" in reference to brown sugar in deference to that make believe flowing "brownulated" sugar. Some people will never use the nuker to make chex mix and it would behoove the manufacturers of the cereal to respect that.

Why is it that people think companies do such things without doing any research or market testing? Some people will never use the microwave, sure. But they decided they could better use the package space for something else.

"Better use of the packaging space"
Like the giant splash clipart of the freaky looking lady on the back? 'Cause that's all there is on the back.

Speaking of boxed cereal recipes, I heard that the original Rice Krispies recipe for the treats was a proportion of 5 cups to 1 bag of marshmallows, but they upped it to 6, even though it creates less tasty and dry treats, so people would buy and use more cereal.
I have never made Chex Mix--are the recipes that different? If they're not that long, how hard could it be to put the alternative proportions and instructions for nuke/oven making?

I agree that I prefer to make Chex Mix in the oven and was lucky to have noticed the recipe switch on the boxes soon enough to have cut out a recipe from a box and keep it in my file. Perhaps it would make sense to contact the company with these concerns? It's obvious from the comments that people have issues with the packaging.

Actually for me, the microwave idea is trickier than the regular oven. I typically double the recipe and tweek it, but the fact that they think making THAT MUCH chex mix in the microwave is ludicrous. I have a big enough pan in the oven and you have to distribute - crazy for them to give those instructions...
