Pepsi to Use Real Sugar?
I just read something that said in April, PepsiCo was going to start selling "Pepsi Throwback" and Mountain Dew Throwback". Made with real sugar instead of HFCS. Has anyone else heard anything about this? Is it true?

I wonder how much that is going to cost? I buy the mexican coke for Mr Tomato who is on a 3 coke a day addiction. As everyone knows I call bullshit on HFCS. We pay 27 bucks a case for it. I have a huge collection of coke bottles now. I am thinking of building some three dimensional project. If they make it I will get some.

Here's the article in Beverage Industry. As a note, it's in the middle of the "Value and Flavor successes" section.
It would be really cool if they did this. Frankly, I'd be totally cool with spending a little more money for sugared soda that doesn't use HFCS. As it stands now, I don't drink sweetened soda that uses it, so my "designer" soda's cost at least 2 bucks a pop.

$27/case sounds a tad bit more expensive than what I pay... There is a little Mexican deli in my neighborhood that sells them for $1 a pop. Haven't tried buying a case from them, but I'm sure they would give me a deal. If you're in the city, they are on 100th st between b'way and amsterdam. Might be worth your while if you're already in town.

@Jerzee- maybe you could build a countertop out of those empty bottles like they do with wine bottles on HGTV... :)
Mexican Coke is the shizz. I couldn't get enough on our honeymoon and have to restrain myself from buying it at the local Mexican store. The husband preferred the Coke Lite but so far I haven't found it stateside. Bummer.

Coke releases a "kosher" Coke around Passover, you can tell them apart from HFCS Coke because they have yellow caps. I think Pepsi does this too, and their available most of the spring (at least around New York anyway). The difference in the taste is remarkable.

Jerzee, if you get enough of those bottles, you could build sustainable housing for you and Mr. Tomato!

Maybe this will force Coke to release a year-round, more-easy-to-get version that uses sugar. I'm not a Pepsi fan—not even the use of real sugar would entice me to drink it.

Jerz - I don't think HFCS is dangerous in and of itself. The problem is that it permeates everything from jarred tomato sauce (which is bleah anyway) to soda to canned soups to you-name-it. There's no way to get "moderate" amounts of it because it shows up in everything.
Pepsi is in enough trouble because of GMA's expose on the Appalachian kids' rotten teeth. The condition is so closely linked to Mountain Dew, they call it "Mountain Dew Mouth."

I just got my first case of Pepsi Throwback. I don't drink much soda, but i plan on stocking up on this.
you can taste the difference, and it is GOOD. i feel like i'm using my purchasing power to say i prefer sugar over corn.
