Peanuts and Coca-Cola
In the last two books I've read, a favorite dessert or snack appears to be dumping a bag of peanuts in a Coca-Cola bottle. It seems like a cool, throw-back dessert to serve at a party. My question, as both of the novels take place in the past, what would you think the appropriate amount of peanuts would be for a 12oz serving of coke?

Was one of those books Secret Life of Bees by chance? I think I remember first hearing about it there...

Lest my street cred be revoked....yes.

But don't you really want to try it?

One of the sisters from the movie Crimes of the Heart, I believe it was Sissy Spacek's character... I always figured it was a Southern thing. And I would love to try it. That sweet, salty thing.

I think it is a Southern thing. My ex-best friend's dad told me about it like 8 years ago. He's from Alabama. It's great, actually. Actually, come to think of it, my parents both did it. We're from TN.
Gotta get the Coke in a glass bottle though. And, you gotta have a straw b/c the salty goodness is all at the bottom so you wanna be able to swirl it around with the straw to distribute it all before you take a big gulp.

I think it is a Southern thing, though it was also in The DaVinci Code - killed a character with a peanut allergy - make sure none of your guests are allergic!

definitely a southern thing...and The Secret Life of Bees was a great book!

My dad and uncles used to do it - and they grew up in Milwaukee in the 1950s... when I asked them how many peanuts, they said, "all of them."
I'm guessing peanuts were packaged differently back then.
They also used to cut a lemon in half, jam a peppermint stick in that, and suck the lemon juice through the peppermint stick.

It's a Southern thing - and yes, glass (or plastic, I guess) bottles are best. Whole salted, peanuts were my favorite, and I'd dump about a handful into the bottle. I'd just set out a bowl of peanuts and let your guests decide how much to add. Oh, it's best if the coke is ICE COLD.
I used to do this with Orange Nehi, too!

Yes, it's actually pretty great. You use a handful of salted peanuts which you dump into the bottle of ice cold coke, shake it a little and drink/eat. I have much southern/mountain family and this is a big hit. As is milk and Pepsi (like, maybe 1/4 milk, 3/4 Pepsi) which I could never get behind, but the Coke and peanuts thing is actually pretty great. Clearly not haute cuisine, but damned good.
A note: I am delighted to have such varied family. Grew up in Hawaii, but many roots in the Appalachian Mountains (my beloved gram) and the deep south (aunt Emmeline and cousin Beau), so I learned a deep and abiding love for spam musubi, plate lunches, fresh guava, chicken fried steak, banana pudding, biscuits and gravy and lady Baltimore cake. Family can be an awesome thing.

@chisai-when we were kids, we mixed chocolate milk and Pepsi.

Had to be the 6 oz glass bottle, icy cold from the soda box with the ice cold water in it, with a package of the redskinned peanuts ( probably were 2 ounces..about 3 TBL.) dumped in. It all had to be purchased at the service station ( where they provided SERVICE). Since the car didnt have AC, stopping for a Co' Cola with peanuts was the pause that refreshed.

Midwest reporting in: Not as a dessert, please. To be consumed sitting on a porch swing or perhaps at a gas station during a Sunday afternoon drive.

We always used RC cola with this, and a handful of peanuts, but I agree that you should let your guests decide how many peanuts to use.

definately a southern thing. first time i saw someone do it in the mid 70's here in florida i was kinda grossed out. btw it's pepsi or RC in the south, not coke. then i tried it once. definately different, salty/sweet/crunchy and juicy all in one. it was pretty good but i didn't make a habit of it.

You can take the coke, I'll take my peanuts boiled (pronounced bowled) cajun style and on my way to Gulf Shores!.... of course I have to shovel my car out first!
