Ostrich — the other red meat!
I recently ran a blog expounding ostrich as a great and healthy sub for red meat. I have had it a few times and I enjoy the flavor and ease of preparation. A local hip burger joint here in Tampa ran an ostrich burger special and it was amazing: great flavor yet light on the stomach. I wonder how many of us adventurous foodies are up for trying it? Or maybe some already have tried and tested recipes What I really want to try next is the eggs!..
Check out my blog, I hope u find it informative

I agree. Delicious!
I wonder how many people you could feed with an ostrich egg...

actually I believe 1 ostrich egg is equivalent to 2 dozen chicken eggs...I get angina pains just thinking of the sheer volume of it

Never - and I repeat never will I eat a burger made with anything but beef ! Okay maybe turkey or ground chicken. Oh and the new thing out there with salmon burgers. But anything beyond that and I'm out of my comfort zone.

I've never even seen it available in my area, and since I've made it 56 years without, I'm not worried about finding any.

I've only had ostrich once, when one of the chefs at school managed to snag us a steak, seared it, and let everyone have a bite. Wow, SOOO good! I'm in!

There is/was a great little bar up where I went to school in the middle of nowhere Minnesota that had bison burgers and ostrich burgers. The bison was good, but let me tell you the ostrich was out of this world. One of the very best burgers I have ever had, hands down. I'm a believer!

If you get the opportunity you must try it...if for no other reason than to have tried something new and different. What's the sense of closing your mind and your taste buds? By the way, ostrich and bison are great!

There's an ostrich farm nearby, so the meat is available here if you know where to look. It tastes a lot like beef and I think if someone was slipped an ostrich burger, they wouldn't know the difference.

Can it be cooked rare? I only want burgers if they are bleeding.

@Amandarama; I've only had ostrich steaks before, but they were always cooked medium to rare, so I would imagine that you could cook the burgers medium/rare as well.

Yes u can have them rare. I usually buy Pokanoket brand..WHole Foods carries them. But there are quite a few places online. it is quite a healthy meat. As soon as Whole Foods starts back.. I will experiment with a few recipes and post it on here and on my blog. Subbing this for red meat can go a long way for cholesterol count, for the health minded. Don`t get me wrong..I like ALL meat, but I do love finding new ones. ANd yep..if someone pulled a switcheroo on you..you probably wont know as you was it down with a nice German brew=)
