NYC takeout smelling funny?

Recently I got some take out from a restaurant that I frequent and it had a weird metallic taste. Almost as if they had not washed all the bar keepers friend off their pots and pans. I considered it a one time mishap, but then got stuff from an other place that had the same weird smell. Now I'm wondering if due to the economic downturn restaurants are using cheaper (less safe) plastic containers? That are slightly melting with the hot food. But it smells metallic not like plastic. Don't know what else it could be. Has anyone else noticed this.

I'm not in NY, but the restaurant we go to most often has switched to plastic takeout containers that are compostable. They warned us not to put them in the microwave. They actually begin melting under hot running water. Not drippy melting, but they malform.
