NY Thruway Favorite Spot?

So I'm thinking of renting a car and heading up the thruway tomorrow to get out of the city, does anyone have a favorite restaurant/diner/drive-in/farm/pizza/winter/wine/whatever spot to check out?

You know, one of those places you end up going to everytime you see an exit on the highway? The kind of place that lends itself to "you thinkin' what I'm thinkin?"-moments.

I have a few along I-95 but can't think of anything on I-87.

Suggestions?

go to new paltz! there is tons of good food, wineries and stores. its exit 18.

just had a great persian meal in kingston, exit 19....

when you get off the exit, look for the traffic circle, get off at broadway
#608 broadway - ARIA GRILL, afghan and persian cuisine.... open for lunch.

very inexpensive - good quality - try the orange rice with saffron, orange peel & pistachios and the vanilla ice cream with rosewater and pistachio.....

very nice place in a funky part of town, there's also a great mexican grocery across the street.....

if you're coming from nyc, maybe these places aren't special, but to us up here in the cultural wasteland -- they are treasures.

I second the nod to New Paltz, especially The Bakery and Main Street Bistro.

Picnic Pizza in Kingston has a wood burning oven and make a nice pie. Le Canard Enchainé is a very legit, tasty, fun French Bistro, in beautiful historic Kingston.

For future trips, go to Miss Lucy's Kitchen in Saugerties, for the most part all seasonal and local produce from area farms, foraged mushrooms, game, etc. They are still closed for the another couple weeks though, will open for the spring season in March.

Go to the Smoke House of the Catskills in Veteran (west Saugerties) for excellent smoked pork and chickens. There's lots of great stuff up there. All the little towns up there have their own farmers' markets, usually weekend mornings, for local cheeses, baked goods, small production meats, cider, honey, and produce.

You can go straight to the farms for fresh unrefrigerated eggs, raw milk, live poultry and rabbits too (you have to call ahead for those: Urbrich Farm in Ravena, call either Bill or Bruce at 518 756 2157 or 518
275 4925)

Have fun!

Yup - new paltz! have breakfast at the bistro, hit the wineries, pick up lunch form the bakery and picnic up the mountain to lake minnewaska....

thanks everyone - as usual serious eats boards never fail. you guys have bailed me out this V-day!

Dallas Hot Weiners in both Kingston, about 3 minutes off Thruway exit 19, and another location in Saugerties, exit 20- again, about 5-7 minutes from exit. It's super cheap, old-school, and the "secret" sauce they put on the hotdogs (and burgers) is amazing. Oh, and the onion rings kick butt.

Their fries are great too.

It's probably too late for your trip...but coming back you might want to stop at Stew Leonard's right off the highway in Yonkers for snacks and some serious food shopping...

New Paltz does have some good food options. There's something off the main strip there that's in an old train station. My friend went to grad school there and always raved about it. Don't know the name, but it's very obvious when you see it.

Like gutreactions said, Stew Leonard's is also a great bet! Love their ice cream. Haven't had it in years.
