Japanese Ingredients in Minnesota
I live in the Twin Cities, and although we have a thriving South-Eastern Asian population - with access to these cultures' ingredients and fresh veggies - it's nearly impossible to find Japanese ingredients beyond nori sheets.
Does anyone know where I can find bonito flakes, hijiki, and miso? Either at a store or online? Thanks!

I have seen, bonito flakes and miso at the whole foods in Uptown. Granted this was about a 1 year and a half ago, when I moved from there, but I'm sure they probably still have them. Also, there are several Asian markets on Nicollet Ave. between 25th and 28th street in Minneapolis. You might have some luck there... or they would be able to direct you some place else.

Agreed - hit the Asian markets on Nicollet but my local Byerly's in St. Louis Park carries miso and other ingredients.

I live in Los Angeles and though ethnic ingredients are pretty easy to come by around here, sometimes you just don't feel like doing all of the driving to different neighborhoods for just one thing, you know? I always use asianfoodgrocer.com for all things Japanese, thaigrocer.com for all things Thai, and greekinternetmarket.com for all things- you guessed- Greek. All of the products on the sites are super cheap and shipping is very reasonable. I highly recommend it. the Asian grocer website is where I purchased my first bag of panko bread crumbs. Ah, memories ...

Look at unitednoodles.com. They are located in Minneapolis.

I second that - I get all of my Japanese staples at United Noodle. They are brilliant, and their larger store has a lotof helpful sales people, but you can even find a lot of their stuff at the smaller location in the Global Market on Lake Street.
