Is there anything better than soup?
I've got a pot of leek and potato soup simmering right now, and I can't wait. A dollop of cream, a handful of cheese, and voila...happiness. Seriously, good hot soup with crusty bread...what is better?

Can I come over and have some?!

I agree with you rhetorically, but a big plate of buttery pasta is very hard to beat in my book, comfort wise. That being said, one of the staples of my mom's winter table was potato leek soup with sourdough bread, so if I had to pick a top five, this would be in it.

To my mind, there really is nothing better than soup. My favorite meal ever.

What could be better than soup? Eating soup naked, in front of a fire, with Orlando Bloom.

This past Fall, my DIL and I spent two days making tomato and roasted red pepper soup, sweet potato and onion, caldo verde, carrot and ginger, and potato, leek and stilton soup, all with fresh produce from the Farmer's market. We went to a Chinese take away and found out where they bought their container's and went and got some cheap, froze all the soup and divied them up. So, @NotAmerican, as to your question, "Is there anything better than soup?" The answer is, "No!" We have been enjoying it all Winter.

As you cannot deep fry soup, yes there probably is. Having said that I have a pot of black bean soup simmering for lunch and I can't imagine much better than that...

@bareneed - what a great idea!

Soup with all-natural air-popped popcorn in it. Now *that* would be better. Almost too good, if you ask me.

I have eaten soup at least once a day every day for two weeks now. Soon I will get sick of it and not make soup again for 6 months, but right now I agree that there is nothing better in this world.

I was just reading this thread and had to answer.. As I write this, I have a big pot of split pea & ham soup simmering...I'm about to take the ham bone out ..and go eat.....yum..To answer your question--there is nothing better than soup-especially when it's 14 degrees outside!
Italiancupcake at 5:47PM on 02/05/09
No. I eat soup every single day. I have to have it with dinner.

Honestly, in the winter, not a lot. Soup is the perfect winter food. It is hot, nourishing, delicious. I usually make a big batch of something every single week that it's cold outside. I never tire of it. It is always wonderful. Right now I'm working off 2 different soups - the awesome Mollie Katzen's Brazilian Black Bean Soup, and this really good (though it may sound kinda weird) sweet potato / apple / ginger soup that a friend gave me the recipe for. That, bread, and a salad and I'm set. Plus, to me soup is the ideal breakfast food, so it just wins in all sorts of ways.

Souper!!!

I never, NEVER order soup in a restaurant. I explained to someone that I don't consider it a meal. I completely believed that I was speaking the truth. This is a true story.
I make soup ALLLLL the time! All different kinds from Tortilla to Clam Chowder to Chili, with everything in between. I love the taste, the process, the delicious smells and the effort involved. And the fact that I can make a huge pot and freeze the rest for a busy night or one of us home sick.
All I can say is... I wasn't thinking?
carolrsfMISSESTEXAS at 12:26AM on 02/06/09
Some deep atavistic thing inside me says that anything you have to pour is a drink, not a food. Drinks are for quenching thirst; food is for soothing hunger. So I don't think of soup when I'm hungry.
Also, I've kind of lost my grip on the stock making process. I'll have to tend to that.
But I've made some damn fine lentil, split pea and bean soups lately.

I love soup. I make and eat soup all the time, winter or summer. I make lighter soups in summer and heartier in winter, but I firmly believe that there is a soup for every weather. And for the most part, I don't make "drinkable" soups, I love when soups have "stuff" in them - which is what makes them "food", not "drink", @gentlyferal :-). I think the only smooth soup I make is tomato soup, and I usually eat it with home-made croutons.
That said, I seldom order soup in restaurants, @Carol. Mostly because a bowl of soup fills me up and I can't eat anything else, other than, perhaps, a small starter. So it must be a really extraordinary soup for me to order it.

making love in a tub of soup?!..... either way, sex is better than soup... either that or you need to work less on your soup recipes and more time...
Pavlov at 5:35AM on 02/06/09
SO and I eat soup constantly in the winter, and at least once a week in the summer, there is nothing like the smell of the house on a cold day when you have a rich soup bubbling away and bread baking. But I'm with Brooke I almost never order soup out. For me soup is supposed to be homemade with lots of love. (@Pav the other comes after the soup, so you have energy ;-) )
huneybumper at 8:04AM on 02/06/09
Right now (considering that the high today is supposed to be 25 degrees), not much. I've been eating white bean with ham, carrots, onions, and collard greens. Add some cayenne pepper, a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of olive oil on top and it's perfect!
Junie at 9:44AM on 02/06/09
That does sound good! Recipe please!
