Is the fish and chips at A Salt and Battery worth seeking out?
Wife and I will be in NYC in May to see Mama Mia. We have seen the "A Salt and Battery" on the Food Network and were wondering if it was worth seeking out while in town. Thanks

I think it's pretty good. I have been there a few times and found their fish and chips taste like classic fish and chips. You could also check out ChipShop in Brooklyn.

SO GOOD! Though I would recommend getting it to go and eating somewhere else (maybe outside, since it will be May) - it is a small place and you will end up smelling like fried food for the rest of the day if you eat in there.

it's pretty good and you do end up smelling like fried food. i think it's worth a trip.

and do try the malt vinegar on your chips if you have never done so.

It's good but not very authentic, if that matters at all. I think the Chip Shop in Brooklyn is supposed to be better. But I don't think if you're visiting NYC, it's a 'must' - unless you come here a lot.

In his book "In Search of Perfection" Harold Blumenthal (a brit, chef at the famed Fat Duck) basically called A Salt and Battery the platonic ideal of a chip shop.
It's really great.

Btw, I went to the Chip Shop in Brooklyn recently and found their fish and chips too much of a greasy gut bomb compared to the lighter, crisper version at A Salt.

Thanks Everyone

I haven't tried it (I have the Chip Shop inBrooklyn for my fix), but i have a British colleague who loves this place. And yes, like Judge says, the Chip Shop's f/c are pretty greasy. I prefer their ploughman's lunch - very nice.

I also prefer A Salt and Battery to Chip Shop. In fact the last time I dined at Chip Shop will most likely be my last time. It's a shame really because I enjoy the atmosphere of the Atlantic Avenue location. The food just isn't up to snuff.
Keep in mind that at A Salt and Battery you order at the register and then hope there's some space at the counter to either perch yourself on a stool or stand to eat your fish and chips.
