I rediscovered _______, and now I love it!

I hated brown rice as a kid, and refused to eat it. I bought some a few days ago on a whim, and now I can't get enough of it.

Has anyone else recently rediscovered something they previously disliked?

Yes, it's amazing how your tastes adapt as you grow up.

I used to hate the taste of olives when I was a child and now they are real delicacy for me, a real Mediterranean flavour that I love.

I am sure over-eating any sort of food as a child can also make you dislike it later in life. I have found this with baked beans.

brussel sprouts

Hmm...wouldn't that be a 'discovery' rather than a 'RE-discovery?'

I discovered raw foods later in my life....sushi, steak tartar, etc.

I REdiscovered mushrooms recently. I liked mushrooms as a kid...then went through an anti-mushroom phase, and now I'm liking them again. Go figure.

I used to despise the flavor of garlic, now I'm slowly starting to like it...

Green olives and brussels sprouts for me, too. What are the odds?

Goat milk. My mom gave it to me as a kid because I believe I had problems with lactose? Not sure but I dreaded it. Now I live the slightly sour tang of it!

as a kid, i didn't like bacon. that didn't last long. i didn't like pancakes either. i only moderately like them now. i'm more of a waffle gal.

I never liked avocados at all but a couple years ago I tried them again and really love them now. Especially in salads!

Sara

Calamari, whitefish, pumpernickel bread and Qwark.

@_greenbean: I didn't like bacon either! Weird. That's definitely changed now.

Another for brussel sprouts. Wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole when I was a kid.

Also didn't like beans. Now I love them (they're good for your heart).

Yet another for brussel sprouts. Also fish! I used to hate it, I don't know why.

Grilled vegetables

hot dogs.
It might have been better if I had not rediscovered a liking for them.

I grew up with an intense dislike of cottage cheese. And then my first pregancy came along. I had really bad morning (actually all day long) sickness, but for some reason I craved cottage cheese. For four and a half months I pretty much ate a 1 lb. container of cottage cheese (Crowley large curd) and 1/2 a sleeve of saltine crackers every day--nothing else. My husband and friends could not understand how I could eat cottage cheese on an upset stomach. But I did, and I like the stuff to this day. And guess what, the child I was carrying then is a huge cottage cheese fan now.

Plain yogurt

hot dogs r sick and always will b

I used to hate cheese when I was a kid (outside of real mac and cheese, I never liked the box stuff). Now, it's possible that that's because the only kind I had was american processed slices. When I became an adult I fell in love with the stuff, and honestly, the stinkier the better. And olives. I really love olives. But again, I think it may be that when I was a kid, the only olives I ever tasted were those things that came in a can.

Brussel sprouts taste like ass and will always taste like ass. It is a gross flavor that I hate.

brussel sprouts for me as well. used to hate them, not love them broiled with a little olive oil and some roasted garlic!

i agree that brussel sprouts were not one of my favorites as a child but i enjoy them once in a while now and also prefer them the way southeasterneater prepares them except that i also sprinkle a little balsamic vinegar on after they are cooked.

sailordave, most folks don't know what ass tastes like, since you seem to know, tell us.

Avocados.
When I was a kid, I was told they were a "fruit" so I thought it tasted disgusting.
If only I knew I was supposed to eat them in savory dishes at that time.
I don't remember when I re-discovered but I'm addicted to them now.

Growing up, I HATED corn in any shape or form. My parents would serve canned corn, creamed corn and would insert said ugly into many dishes. It would make me gag. I also disliked corn chips, corn cereal, cornbread, corn anything....and still gag when I smell popcorn. BUT.......

One year my DH convinced me to grow some corn in our veg garden. I said ick, but ok...anything for you my dearly beloved!!!

I steamed the first ripe tender sweet ears of corn and my hub begged me to take a bite. I said, no, please don't make me..but then I relented and took a little bite.

OMG!! It was delicious, sweet, fresh and I can't describe the taste. Since then, I can't get enough of it...but only fresh corn on the cob....when it's in season, I grill it, steam it, boil it, and even figured out a way to microwave it. I love it.

I used to despise asparagus as a kid, but now I love it!

Asparagus, brussel sprouts (definitely an adult food), raw oysters. Things I ate as a child but won't anymore? Octopus and escargot. Oh, and isn't that sailordave clever with words?? Can't get enough of that!

So, Sailor Dave, how does ass taste?

@pielady - probably like chicken.....

@PrettyNicola

I recently re-discovered hot dogs too!!

Beets! I thought I hated them, and then a restaurant gave me a side of roasted caramelized beets, and I rediscovered them wholeheartedly. Turns out that I actually just hated canned, vinegary beets.

(I also hated hamburgers and meat sauce and meatloaf as a kid - anything with ground beef, basically. I'll eat those things now, but its more about slowly 'getting used' to them, than it is about re-discovery.)

I have always hated feta, but had a greek dip last Friday, and now it is my new love!

I have always hated eggs. Fried, poached, boiled, scrambled, it doesn't matter, they are just vile. It is the only thing I WISH I liked.

Growing up eggs, onion (raw and cooked) and pizza made me want to run screaming but now I love eggs, pizza and even cooked onion. My tastebuds still can't handle raw onion but I do like a hint of chives on my baked potatoe :)

Growing up, I could not stand aubergines, mushrooms, yoghurt (plain or flavoured) and cottage cheese (well, among other things:-)). The intolerance for the first two definitely stemmed from their texture, no matter how they were prepared.

I started enjoying aubergines and mushrooms in my late teens (although I started eating mushroom soups sans mushrooms even earlier, then gradually went on to eating caramelised mushrooms, and so on), and found that I actually loved both cottage cheese and yoghurt in my late 20s, although I still have an odd relationship with yoghurt - I can have a phase when I eat it 3 times a day, and then I don't want to look at it for a year.

It's not a food, but it is a kitchen item - Waxtex waxed paper sandwich bags. I use them for all sorts of storage when I just don't want plastic on the food. Cheese, half an onion, sandwiches, etc. They are hard to find but I bought a case from the manufacturer. My mom used to use them for packing our lunches before plastic baggies were introduced. Much more ecologically friendly and no health concerns as far as I know.

Der Anchovies, I used to hate it when my mom would open up a tin and eat them with crackers, or put them in a salad, or on a pizza, I would make the classic "horrified" that she was even my mother face. Now i love the little hairy guys, so much so that my local pizza place calls me the "fishy lady"

Beef Stroganoff !!!!

Lentil soup, but not my mom's plain glop.

Cole slaw. I had a bite a month ago, at the behest of my mother, then ate the rest of her and my father's bowls. I've now been searching for different slaw recipes to recreate the yummy sweet/salty/vinegary flavor. But man did I hate it as a kid.

I used to hate:
seafood
olives
cheese
eggs

Now I know what I've been missing out on!!

I used to hate eggplant -- and while I'm still not a fan of the 'standard' eggplant (Italian, I think?), in the past twelve months or less I've discovered that I *love* Thai, Japanese and Indian eggplants. Especially roasted. Yum!

Brussels sprouts! Hated them as a child and just tried them (roasted) for the first time in 30 years. Now, I can't get enough. Who knew?

Brussel sprouts here too. They're still not my favorite, but definitely more palatable than when I was a kid.

Oatmeal and cottage cheese (definitely a texture thing)
Steak (laugh all you want...I hated it as a kid)
Mashed potatoes
Cauliflower

Pho. Skinny rice noodles tasted too plain and mushy to me when I was little and now I love it. It's good in a simple way.

Stewed bunny and pokeweed. Fried bunny was OK. Pokeweed, never!
