How has Serious Eats improved the quality of your life?
I felt the need to post this thread after receiving my very awesome Lock and Lock food containers. I had no idea such a thing existed and I'm just loving them.
And I can finally make decent short ribs.
And when I have a food question, I get actual useful answers.
And I get help when trying to figure out what my newest food appliance will be, again, useful answers from people who know what they're talking about because they use them.
And my Kechacha sauce! (Ketchup and Sriracha) which came from someone posting about whether they could be mixed and me thinking "Great idea!" - Please note - on French fries? Awesome.
And where to find good bread machine recipes.
The list goes on and on.
Oh, plus the people on this site are mostly pretty great.
What are the thing that you've learned from this site that affect your everyday food life?

It gives me cravings I never thought I'd have ... Anyone for some more Bacon-n-Butter? ;-)

I love the random quirky food news like the hamburger fatty melt a while back.I also get inspired by dinner tonight, and se ny has led to some great food finds.

Oh, YES! DEFINATELY!! I love this site and have gotten really helpful food prep suggestions, food storage ideas, and great recipes to boot! Certain foods I've never heard of before I am now trying.
@chisai, I agree, alot of the people on this site are great.. If you don't mind my asking, where can I find a Lock and Lock?
@LunaPierCook-this site does give me cravings I never thought I'd have--(except for horse):o)
Also gives me great feedback on where to find great places in NY--you guys haven't been wrong yet!

I get inspirational advise from a "kitchen cabinet". I have a vast new group of people just as weird as me. I am twittering, facebooking and networking like all the other people.
I also got to meet a whole bunch of new people.

I think the biggest thing for me is that I am constantly getting inspired by posts on this site - whether on the main page or in a talk thread. I live alone, and until very recently was in school, and when it comes to dinner its been all too easy to just make some pasta with jarred sauce or throw a bag of salad in a bowl, top with whatever dressing I have on hand, and call it a day.
Now I see that it isn't that difficult, or time consuming, to cook good, healthy meals, even if it is just me. And, I am getting tons of great ideas for when (hopefully soon) I am no longer just cooking for myself!
And, of course, there is the added benefit of getting to talk to all of you (mostly) wonderful peole!

First and foremost, new friends, true friends who share our common interest in food, and their lives. I never would have believed that could happen, but it can and it has. I feel truly blessed. And hungry. ;D

Serious Eats is exactly what I was looking for in so many ways. I can get great answers to any questions I have, great recipes, food news, tips on where to eat out when I travel. And everyone seems like real Foodies not Food Snobs. But most importantly Serious Eats makes me happy!
marchesa at 11:38AM on 02/15/09
I'm going to echo @LPC and @Perky - Serious Eats gave me new cravings and new friends. I found a whole group of people who share my passion for food, and it's been nothing short of magical.
We discuss salad dressings, horses and nuts, and none of it seems weird or out of place. We are all different. Some of us love mayo, some fancy Miracle Whip and some can't stand either one, but we all are passionate about all things food. We probably would have never met in real life, but we've been brought together by Serious Eats where we feel at home, thanks to our wonderful, accommodating and generous hosts.

It's easy to read. Great web design especially on the 'talk menus'. Beside the talk board, it's also where I start looking for new and creative recipes - and affiliated comments. I browse here a lot.

I mean, the site has "changed my life" in all the great ways everyone's already mentioned: new recipes, interesting food news, a never ending-source of food knowledge. I'd have to say, though, that the best thing Serious Eats has given me is the fact that I no longer feel like a freak. I don't know ANY foodies and my boyfriend, ever the perfect boyfriend, puts up with me yammering endlessly about recipes and ingredients and techniques, etc., etc. He's so lovely about it, but I know it bores him to death; it's like me having to hear about his sports all day.
The point being that being able to connect with a ton of foodies and not feel like a weirdo has been really awesome. We are all obsessed with food and we may be freaks, but we're freaks together and we have a site where we can explore our passion or just shoot the shit with each other.
My poor boyfriend now listens to me talk endlessly about stuff I see on Serious Eats, but I think he sees it as an improvement. Plus, everything I've learned from this site benefits him because he's the one stuffing his face with my new recipes.

Without any doubt, it is the community. Recipes I can get from books or a Google search.
In life on this side of the computer screen, the usual reaction when people taste my food is, "This is really great..."
And then comes the "...but..."
And that can be "I don't know why you go through this much trouble," or, "I'd never make this," or, "you know you can buy this in a store," or, "you're crazy to put this much effort into cooking."
The people on SE understand why I make these things rather than buying them, even if it's not something you, personally, would choose to make. And we can talk about it in detail.
DH understands why I like to cook, because he has hobbies, too, but when I start cooing over the methods and ingredients and comparative values of different appliances, he starts getting lost. He'll listen, but after a while, there's nothing he can say.
Here, I get feedback from people who know what I'm talking about.
And no matter how much I cook, I have those "aha" moments here where someone mentions something they have made or want to make, and suddenly I'm thinking, "I've never thought of that." And then I'm writing shopping lists for the next day's challenge.
Oh yeah. And I love being able to answer other people's questions when I've got the experience. And you-all don't look at me like I've grown a third eyeball when I say that I've made this before, and this is how it's done.

YES! The bf is a much better cook than me. For years I lived on cereal, ramen and pbj, with weekend dates out at some amazing restaurants. Then I met bf. Bf cooks amazing, and I'm sorry but neither Bourdain, Bouchon, or Bulli have nothing on his homemade concoctions that borrow from many cultures, as well as my heritage, and fuse it all together. (He's Chinese and I'm Spanish/Middle Eastern.) Okay sometimes the results are downright sinister but I love his adventurous spirit. I will stop gushing now. So....a few months ago, he tried to teach me how to cook. Here's me: "Huh? What's that weird looking square-headed think? A what-chula? What, you mean Velveeta isn't a synonym for cheese???" So a friend suggest reading SE for recipes, for cooking tips and instead I fight a new addition to my lifestyle! And thought I still might nuke a "slice" of Velveeta in the microwave occasionally, I am no longer afraid of those great stinky cheese-- in fact, I seek them out...

@italiancupcake - I got them from Amazon, though they're also available from QVC. I'm a Prime Amazon customer and get free two day shipping, so they're always my first choice when I want to buy stuff online.
I forgot another thing I really like about this site. There's not a whole lot of food snobbery going on. I can proclaim my occasional love of spam and I receive no lectures on how, you know, perhaps I should go elsewhere. I have "foodie" friends in real life, but their interests aren't as varied, as broad, as what I see on this site.
chisai at 4:58PM on 02/15/09
@chisai-thanks for the heads up-I'm gonna look on both Amazon and QVC now........

One of the things I love the most is the personalities. Being in college, most people don't understand why I get worked up over new trends in food, new chefs, things like that, but here, not only do people understand, they get just as fired up! It's entertaining to no end. But also, like so many have said, I just get so inspired by reading everything that goes on here. The first thing I do every day is check my email for the newsletter; the last thing I do before I go to bed is check the Talk section. Haha, it's gotten to the point where I have SE bookmarked on my iTouch so that when I'm in the grocery store, I can look up that recipe I just saw and make sure I have all the ingredients. It's gotten to the point where I feel bad nuking leftovers for dinner because I know if I put the contents of my fridge up in a post, I'd have a dozen suggestions for dinner ready in an hour or less. You guys are awesome! ♥
kfarrel3 at 5:33PM on 02/15/09
I can't pinpoint a certain topic, but I learn something new from everyday by the other's on SE. To me this is magical.
pjracz10 at 6:21PM on 02/15/09
And...you guys are always around. No matter what time of day or night, or when during the week, there's usually someone else around. Or if I've been busy and haven't checked the site, it seems like there's someone else there because there's always something new to read.
dbcurrie at 7:43PM on 02/15/09
I agree with so many of the comments above....I love that this is a place where I can be myself, and find kindred spirits. I think it's the only place both in the real & virtual world, where I can comment that I made butter one night while I was watching tv to see what it was like to make butter, and I didn't feel odd saying it. When I mentioned that to people IRL I think they thought I was nuts! lol
Thanks to everyone for making this a place to indulge our food obsessions!
mepolo at 7:59PM on 02/15/09
@db - so true - everyone is always around, no matter what time of day or nite....
love the site, the people .... the topics.... and i love the fact that i have these visual images of you all.... like a storybook.
you're all good company.... couldn't live without you!

I cook more for me. I read something about an ingredient and it takes me somewhere I've never been before. I travel a lot for work, so cooking is especially rewarding (a stove? a fridge? my own mugs? heaven). This site pushes me after a hard days work by tempting me with that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
I might be dead on my feet right now, but chinese roasted pork belly buns for $8? Let's do this.
froggo at 6:06PM on 02/16/09
I learned those green bags really work.
chardonnay at 6:25PM on 02/16/09
All of the above AND my boredom at work is significantly relieved. Though not my mid-afternoon snack cravings;)

kfarrel3:
Wait now, these are leftovers of dishes that...
I'd be proud to nuke such leftovers: thrift, y'know. As well as excellent taste. Also makes room in the fridge for the new inspirations.
But yeah, what you said!
