He said, 'Broccoli is the anchovy of vegetables'

Well, an interesting way of making his point I suppose. I just happened to mention that I was adding my lovely, separately cooked broccoli to my plate of stir fry, knowing that he wasn't crazy about broccoli. That comment really conveyed just how much he hates the vegetable and basically if it's in a dish, the dish is poisoned as far as his tastebuds are concerned. I had pasta primavera last summer and he said it would have been good except for the broccoli flavor that was laced throughout the sauce. Gee, the power of a couple of florets.
College days and delivering pizza, the man placed the pies with anchovies in the trunk of his car...separate from the rest of the deliveries. Good thing broccoli calzones weren't on the menu then--they would have been banished too.
I guess I kind of understand how he feels about some things rendering a dish inedible. I can't eat fruit salad if there's any melon in it. No picking around it; the flavor of the melon has permeated the salad. I can't pick off sausage or pepperoni off a pizza and then eat it either. So guys, what's the thing you can't stand in a dish, rendering it inedible, that others seem to love?

For me it's peas. I hate peas. I can tolerate them in very small amounts or when they're not cooked to mush but I distinctly remember asking my mother, "Must you ruin everything with peas?"

Sichuan peppercorns. My dad loves that stuff because his hometown was right next to Sichuan, but I will not eat anything that's been in contact with it. And I can always tell.

Capers -- can't stand 'em.

Red Onions. They cannot be simply picked off or ignored, you can still taste them in every bite. Yuck.

Stuffing?dressing with the giblets ect in it, but I pick around it.
Raw tomatos again I pick around that too. Most everything that I can't stand I pick around. The only thing that I can't pick around is something with horeeradish or wasabi in it.

@chiffOnade- Same here with the peas, a plate full of peas or pea salad forget it, but if there are peas floating around in a soup or stew then I can handle that

I hate chunks of onion in marinara sauce. I'm fine with them in salsa, grilled with peppers for fajitas or cheeseburgers, in chili, and have even gotten to the point where I don't mind raw red onion rings on a salad. But I HATE them in marinara sauce. It doesn't matter whether it's for spaghetti, or lasagna, or pizza, or any other Italian food - it ruins it for me. If I'm served a dish with onions in the marinara, I will put off eating for a few minutes just so I can pick them out - in a subtle way, of course. Used to drive my mother crazy.

Same with melon here. I can't even be in the same room as melon, as the smell permeates the air! And don't talk to me if you've just eaten any, OR a Jolly Rancher Watermelon candy. Ew.

Lima beans. They are just gross. Texture and taste yuck yuck yuck.

Cooked red cabbage. Can't eat it or anything that it's in. Raw is fine. Green cabbage cooked is fine. No red.

rosemary. eeeew.

Turnip - totally flavours anything it is in. No wonder I didn't like stew or homemade soup when I was younger. Once I discovered it was the turnip, things turned around quick on the stew and soup front!

Like Cassaendra, I am not a big fan of onions and garlic, and because they have such a strong odor and flavor, even if I pick them out, I still find myself feeling their 'effects' afterward (it's not so much the taste but the effect on me that I don't like). But I have had to eat many veggie dishes with them.

I am pretty used to picking things out, though, being a picky eater. I guess the only thing would be meat. At the Insensitive House, I've been served stuff with meat and told to pick it out, but it just doesn't work that way, given how juices bleed and such.

I also don't like heavy liquors, so a piece of rum or Kahlua cake is not for me, and I can't just eat the icing because the flavor is so strong.

Everything else, I really don't mind eating around. Like I don't like corn or peas, but I just won't eat them if they are in a soup. Whipped cream can be scraped off.

Cilantro. No matter where it is (or was), I can taste it, and I do not like it.

Green Bell Peppers. It's the only thing that I ask to be left out of dishes out to eat, and I will return it if I am ignored. THEY ARE THE WORST.

Mushrooms. God help me.

Saffron, white pepper. Both can ruin an entire meal for me.

Bell peppers (green) for me too. Blech. I have one recipe I adore with them in it, and I could never leave them out. I cook the casserole with the diced bell pepper in, and then I pick it out and don't eat them. But it is the ONLY recipe where I can stand the flavor (and want it.) Curried Sausage Casserole....yum.

Olives. If I'm really hungry and my options are lacking (e.g. the only vegetarian pizza option has olives) I'll pick them out, but I'd rather not. I also pick out capers but they don't render a dish inedible.

Another thing that renders dishes inedible, though I can't say that people love it, are preservatives such sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. To me they taste and feel like acid burning my tongue. I check ingredient lists. If something such as fruit salad (where it's common) has no such list I avoid it anyway or inquire. Sometimes fruit salad in restaurants comes in big, preserved vats.

The only normal food that would render a dish inedible is finding shredded coconut in it. If it's a cake frosting, I could scrape it off, but if it's throughout a dish, it's a deal-breaker. Fortunately, that's not a common occurrence.

And coconut milk is okay, like in curries.

I have to specify normal food, though, because I'm not interested in Andrew Zimmerman style dining.

Beetroot - there is no picking round it. I agree about melons, too - I once had a misfortune of picking a pineapple chunk out of a fruit salad containing melons, and let's just say, I learnt my lesson.

Chunks of cooked carrots and/or tomatoes. I would eat round them, but usually dishes that contain either are really full of them, so I just give up. Which is why I never eat anything made with chunky tomato sauce.

Chunks of raw yellow onions. And I love onions. But they have to be either sauteed, or caramelised, or pan-fried/roasted, or grilled.

Oh, and of course dried/candied/cooked fruit and/or berries - there is absolutely no picking round them (although I once ate a little bit of the crust from the slice of apple pie I was given). I just give up altogether. I guess I will never eat a granola bar, unless I make a batch just for me, sans dried fruit.

Cilantro – but I can tolerate it in salsa because of all the chili and onion.
Liver – I have that receptor on my tastebuds that makes it taste bitter. That and the mushy texture <shudder!> I'm not keen on giblet gravy for that reason. But liverwurst is a whole 'nother story!
Ketchup – please, bury it decently in a batch of barbecue sauce or keep it to yourself. It's great in barbecue sauce, but ruins a hamburger, to say nothing of French fries.

I think there are a few more, but I can't remember them right now.

Beets! They taste like dirt to me.

hard boiled eggs. they disgust me. i hate the smell, the texture and the taste. i can barely stand to watch someone else eat them. other kinds of egg are okay, though. i think this is the only food i feel so strongly about.

Canteloupe and celery absolutely ruin a dish for me!

Bananas!

I HATE them and if there are any at all in a fruit salad, dessert, smoothie, or anything like that I spit it out immediately. My friend has a goal of one day making a dessert that has banana in it that I will eat. It's not happening, I loathe anything banana or banana flavored.

Eggplant and portobello mushrooms (the juices of which ooze all over whatever it is, rendering the entirety of the dish inedible), as well as cooked pepperoni. I think that might be it; the rest of it, I can pick around.

Mayo. I hated it when adults who happened to like mayo would tell me to "just scrape it off." It's not something you can "just scrape off." My parents were the worst for that, and then wonder why I wouldn't eat whatever it was. They finally understood when I made dinner one night, and put tons of onions in it. My brother hated onions. He complained, so I told him to "just pick them out." He said the taste of onions was still there. I told him I had to "just scrape off" mayo, and the taste was still there, so he could deal with onions. Mom and dad stopped the "just scrape it off" thing that day.

cooked red onions or green bell peppers. both are fine raw, but they taste awful cooked. anchovies on pizza.

When I was little, I didn't like onions because of their reputation of making people cry, but now they're just all right.

@dbcurrie, I hear you. I hate shredded coconut, and the taste of it permeates the entire dish, so it's impossible to eat around (plus it's skinny and white and even if you're trying to avoid it, you still manage to eat some). But I can usually handle coconut milk as part of a sauce or soup or whatever, unless whoever's cooking goes crazy with it.

Most things for me are a matter of good v. nasty preparation (other than meat and fish--I'm a vegetarian). So, for instance, storebought mayo just grosses me out, but I'll happily eat homemade. Undercooked, sproingy eggplant will make me ill, but well-prepared eggplant is delightful. The only kind of food I absolutely cannot tolerate is _bland_ food! Why waste the calories on something that tastes like nothing?

Wow, I thought I was the only watermelon hater out there! It's evil - both the actual stuff and the flavor.

Sad story, we took a bad, cheap cruise out of LA a few years ago for some reason that now escapes me. The food was, needless to say, mediocre, but on the last night, there was baked alaska, which I do like, and which seems pretty difficult to screw up (I mean, even bad cake, ice cream and meringue is tasty). It arrived, in all its flaming glory, sprinkled with a "confetti" of fruit. Which was primarily made up of watermelon. I was so disappointed, because it did, in fact, contaminate the dish with it's weird watermelony flavor!

Me too – clean, rich, garden dirt. That's why I love them. Potatoes, too.

Oh gosh, I forgot about coconut.

@dbcurrie & @cycorider--there is nothing worse than getting all psyched up to bite into a piece of cake or candy you're looking forward to as a treat and then suddenly taste coconut. It tastes like woven straw to me, or brains and the flavor is both sweet and cottony all at once.

As ultimate proof: as a child, I used to get an Easter basket and the only thing I wouldn't eat was the green coconut nest. It had several jelly beans adhered to it, and sometimes, when very greedy, I would try to pry off the beans and eat them, but it never worked, it always tasted like coconut and I would have to spit them out.

Answer is: clove. Best way to ruin food, use too much of it. Or, sometimes, any of it.

Eggs. It's an affliction.

Coconut. I can't stand it. Also lima beans - ugh. My roomie loves lima beans, and hates cooking, so I make lima beans for him and just heating them up grosses me out. Also liver. I can't stand liver.

I'm amazed at some of the things people hate. Watermelon? Watermelon is beyond delicious! I may be biased - my grandparents grew watermelons on their farm and I grew up on them. I LOVE watermelon!

I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only ovophobe out there. It's a lonely world.

agree with a lot of the above -- beets, pepperoni (its oil melts into the food), capers, condiments like ketchup and yellow mustard, PICKLES (AAAH).

Anise. It's about the only thing I absolutely cannot tolerate any of whatsoever. Means I'm not too keen on fennel either.

Iceberg lettuce tastes horrifyingly like plastic.
Saffron tastes like chemicals. Ugh.

Parsley - no matter how I try to like it, I just can't. It tastes awful to me. I nearly always forget to specific no parsley at restaurants and end up trying to scrape all the little bits off the food or out of the soup.....gag....

Celery. OMG the worst is chewing something and getting the UNEXPECTED crunch. Ohhh ew.

Ditto raw onions. I can pick them out if they're in slices...but diced? UGH.

Anise is nasty. My boyfriend and my father love Sambuca and fennel. WTF. Black licorice? Groooooss.

Broccoli Rabe. It's sacrilegious in my family to not like this...but it is so bitter and metallic tasting to me.

For me it's ginger. No gingebread men, gingerbread houses, and I have to be really careful w/ chinese food. I get that one bite and it's over.

My husband says he hates bell peppers, mushrooms and celery...but eats them if he can't see them. I cook a number of soups, casseroles, and stir frys without him knowing the veggies are there.
I hope it works with kids too...

I can work around almost anything but melon.

Oh, and salmon or tuna. I don't like eggs, but I won't sit and pick the egg strips out of Pad Thai. Fishiness is just SO pervasive.

I don't know how much other people love it, but goat cheese repulses me. I wish it didn't. Batali once said that your love of goat cheese depends on whether you knew the barn or the cheese first...and I knew the barn first.

I would have to say peppers-except sweet and chili. Roasted Red Peppers have got to be one of the worst things. EVER.

Onions. I can only handle the flavoring-like onion powder. That's it. Otherwise, it's a deal breaker.

Peas, Asparagus, Lima Beans, Coconut, Mushrooms-they are all deal breakers too.

Banana Desserts. Can't stand banana in anything really. Except for bread. I think it's because I ate too many when I was little.

@sweethuni: You must be Italian. Haha...My mom always made that and I loved it. She doused it with Garlic..MMMMmmmm, so good. It would be against all rules for me not to like it. Good thing I like it!

Black olives on pizza or in sandwiches, pastas etc...yuck. BUT I love the cheapie ones right out of the can...go figure.

oh and anything anisey...even the slightest taste, no fennel, no tarragon, no five spice poweder...yuck...yucky...phooey.

Cannot stand sour cream; both taste and smell make me gag!! And I can usually taste even a small amount in things. Also, don't like that buttermilk taste. It's ok in baked things cause I don't get that icky flavor.

Not too fond of cream cheese in its natural state or in frostings (it's a texture thing). Don't mind it too much as a carrier in strongly flavored things like blue cheese dip.

Hate, hate, hate liver in all its manifestations.

Anchovies on pizza or salad. What a crime against pizzas and salads.

Green peppers raw. Taste very metallic to me. Used to pick out all the little pieces of pepper and onion in my mom's tomato sauce. Drove my dad nuts. I do like the taste of them cooked, now.

Also, don't like licorice - tastes weird. Can eat small amount of raw anise.

Celery. It's so freaking pointless and weird, cooked and raw. I have never figured out WHY in the world people like it and add it to things.

I am a raw celery hater. The taste and stringiness get to me. However, celery is essential to a majority of soups that I make.

Mayonnaise. If food has even been touched by it, I won't eat it.

Olives! I find nothing takes over the flavor of a dish like those things. They taste like band-aids. Doesn't matter which kind either I am an equal-opportunity olive hater.

Cilantro tastes like death.

Capers, green olives, beets, celery, and anything that tastes like licorice.

Thyme. Ick. Yucky. Blech. If there's thyme in something, it ruins the flavor for me. I'm not sure why.
