Have you discovered any new amazing foods lately?
I ask this because just five minutes ago I tried a new cheese (well, new for me at any rate). It's Cypress Grove Chevre Truffle Tremor. Seriously? I think this is just about the most delicious cheese I've ever eaten in my life. I mean, swoon inducing. It's kind of very extremely pricey and I'd never have gone there except that since I've given up the meat thing for Lent, I've given myself a bit more leeway in the expensive cheese area. And boy, oh boy, it's totally worth giving up the burgers for a while.
So how about you? Any awesome new food finds?

I didn't know kiwi were being grown in Italy. After a recent surgery mom sent me a fruit basket and there were kiwi in there from Italy. They were half-again as big as any NZ kiwi I'd seen and much sweeter. I'll be looking for the Italian ones now.
LunaPierCook at 10:22AM on 02/28/09
I found a new store in our backwoods area of New Jersey: Food from the Phillipines They carry a sweet pepper sauce that is very hot and sweet and is fantastic over everything.

Pot barley. I made barley risotto and roasted peppers stuffed with barley...Yum! As for cheeses, I discovered Gouda Goat's cheese in my local market and I am now hooked!
HappyMuncher at 12:48PM on 02/28/09
Greek Gods brand Greek style yogurt, pomegranate flavor.
kathyvegas at 1:09PM on 02/28/09
@chisai, where do you buy that cheese?
cybercita at 1:39PM on 02/28/09
french feta cheese crumbled, tender crisped boiled (fresh) green beans, diced red onion, chopped (fresh) dill, italian dressing. mix all together. serve chilled. all ingredient amounts done to taste. i like extra feta. easy and filling.

Pomegranate molasses. It's just pomegranate juice reduced with cane sugar, but it has this great tart zing. I put it on anything and everything, but my fave is over plain greek yogurt. I've also used it in cookies instead of honey to add some extra flavor.
bialy at 3:55PM on 02/28/09
Well, hm. I'm willingly eating cilantro now. Ran across a lovely Middle Eastern meatball recipe which had cilantro in the meat mix and still more cilantro in the yogurt sauce. Only made it because my husband insisted on buying cilantro. It didn't taste like floor sweepings at all. Was rather nice, in fact.
Yesterday I had a "super taco al pastor" at a local burrito place. Absolutely great dish: grilled marinated pork, beans, fresh salsa (yes, with cilantro). Offered my husband a taste; it was hot enough to make him wince -- and I was quite surprised to be nonchalantly enjoying something that hot. Until now, he's had a higher tolerance for chilis than I do.
Now, I can't figure out if it's in the *air,* or in the *water.*

Hitting Pike Place Market always leads to a bevy of new finds and discoveries. My latest kick? The Bavarian Deli. The best of the "wurst." The beerwurst was amazing, very akin to a German cotto salami.
And landjager...sweet landjager. The best dried meat snack I've ever eaten. *Swoon*

Every time I go to the cheese store, I find something new. I go looking for one thing, and I come back with three extra cheeses. Or four. Plus other stuff.
It's not new any more, but when I found Greek Yogurt, I was amazed. I was never fond of regular yogurts for eating plain, and now that I'm making my own, I've got to say that it's not just the thickness. There's a flavor in the whey that I don't like very much in yogurt. Straining it makes all the difference in the world.
Found a "new" vegetable at the grocery store called Aspiration that I wasn't all that fond of. It was okay, but I wouldn't pay top dollar for it. If it's ever at the farmer's market, I'll try it again, though.
Last year, there were pears at the farmer's market that were divine. I've always liked pears, but generally other fruits get priority. But those pears were sooooo good.
Blood oranges are interesting. Still not sure if I like them better or not.
Frangelico.
dbcurrie at 6:58PM on 02/28/09
@happymuncher- does "Pot Barley" give you the munchies? lol.
@all-ya'll- french feta is yummy I concur.
Have any of you tried Matouk's Calypso hot sauce? It is citrusy-garlicy-scotch bonnet- hot madness.
bisbee at 7:10PM on 02/28/09
@DB Currie- try that Frangelico as a night cap in some milk.... heaven !( if you're not lactose intolerant)
bisbee at 7:12PM on 02/28/09
@bisbee, after I um, sampled the first little bottle I bought, I went back and bought its big brother. Sadly, that's gone, too. And a good bit of it went into a glass with ice and half-and-half that was left over. Oh yeah, that was mighty tasty. This summer, I suspect I'll have to make Frangelico ice cream.
dbcurrie at 7:49PM on 02/28/09
Bok Choy - for some reason have never really considered buying or using it. Had a recipe that called for it, so after 40 years dancing in the kitchen bought my first bunch the other night. Was really good!
Ribster at 8:26PM on 02/28/09
@cybercita - I got it thru FreshDirect. It's kinda pricey $22.99/lb, but OMG, it's totally worth it. I can't believe I just said that.
chisai at 9:55AM on 03/01/09
Brussel sprouts. I can only remember my parents making them once as a kid. I don't remember hating them, but we never had them again. I think because my brothers made such a big deal!
Fast forward like 20 years and I was at a friend's house this past Thanksgiving. She made this recipe here:
Brussel Sprouts with Balsamic Vinegar
Since then, I cannot get enough of brussel sprouts!

i'll see if murray's has it.

@pooch - I love pea shoots. How are you using them?
I've been eating strawberry creme fraiche that I found recently at Whole Foods, and it's amazing. Good on almost everything. Also, Bison jerky at Trader Joe's is so delicious.

Swiss Chard and Broccolini...I don't know how I've lived this long without it!
sammie at 11:58AM on 03/02/09
Cumin gouda and prosciutto in a croissant. Holy crap. Go and buy all of the ingredients now and eat it for breakfast with some greek yoghurt and honey on the sides.
It's like the gods put amazingness into amazingness, grabbed a side of awesome and said "that's what breakfast should be" and then giggled while I got a little bit chubbier.
froggo at 12:08PM on 03/02/09
Agave...a natural sweetener. It's lighter than honey, but it adds a bit of "round" sweetness that's really pleasant in everything from marinades to martinis.
erancili at 12:38PM on 03/02/09
Wallaby brand "Austrialian style" yogurt, maple flavor. Not sure what makes it "Austrailian style", unless that is a synonym for "yummy".
Cinnamon poached seckel pears. Had them in a salad, but think they would be divine sliced into some homemade vanilla bean or bourbon ice cream.
Truffle salt in polenta. Neither one is new on its own, but the combination was recently discovered by DH and now I cannot stop wanting to eat it!
New Glarus Belgian Red beer. Believe it or not, it tastes like a delicious cinnamon spiked cherry pie in a glass. I had a taste from a friend's stash and now am scheming about how to get the in-laws to pick up a couple cases for me when they go to Wisconsin this summer.
Mizbee at 12:39PM on 03/02/09
We recently ordered a breakfast gyro skillet and a corned beef skillet. I wouldn't say this was knock my socks off amazing, but it was quite good.
Of course, I tossed out the egg whites and Swiss cheese from my skillet and ate the runny yolk all over the corned beef, potatoes, and bell peppers. I ate a few bites of just the yolk, gyro meat, potatoes, and picked out the onions from my husband's plate.
I rediscovered a basil seed drink I liked years ago and found them on the shelf again. I love gelatinous things in my drinks.
Cassaendra at 12:59PM on 03/02/09
Here's my curmudgeonly response: Just as the word "awesome" has now lost all meaning through over- and misuse (is everyone truly in awe of all of the mundane things now described as "awesome"?), the word "amazing" is now used in lieu of everything from "very good" to "just above adequate." Let's be a bit more creative and use some adjectives that tell us more about your real reactions.
lawandmusic at 1:38PM on 03/02/09
This is really silly, but Whittaker's chocolate peanut slabs. (I'm in NZ and so I'm finding that packaged goods and candies not found in the US are pretty exciting no matter what.) Peanut slabs look like small bricks of gold bouillon and taste amazingly velvety and crunchy.
Also fresh creamed manukka honey. Mmmm....
cardamompod at 1:56PM on 03/02/09
Well, the McGangBang was a bit of a discovery. Is it truly "amazing" though? Survey says: YES.
shoneyjoe at 2:20PM on 03/02/09
Greek Gods brand ice cream, Baklava flavor. It's dense, rich and tastes nuttty and floral at the same time...lovely!
greenkitchen at 2:23PM on 03/02/09
@bisbee /dbcurrie - Frangelico in warmed vanilla soy is good too! Even for anti-lactose-ites! Extra nutty mmmm...
My OH also made some caramel-fudge covered popcorn by accident; it's quite good too!
Ham hawks brased with green beans and canned pears was a golden-meal growing up--I made it with pork meatballs the other day with great results!

I'm losing some weight via a low-carb diet and I just discovered Shirataki: noodles made of tofu and yam flour. One gram carb per ounce of noodle. Yes, they're not as good as Italian semolina noodles, but they fill a craving. Oh, and for those who care, they're gluten free, dairy free, and egg free.

Kale. Lacinato kale salad with oranges, beets, feta and toasted walnuts. Sauteed kale with garlic. White bean and kale soup.

When Haagen Dazs had the ice cream contest and the sticky toffee pudding flavor won, I went out and bought it (and bought it, and bought it). I swear it was the best ice cream I've ever had!

Home-made fried rice. I had never made it before and will now be a staple with any Asian dish I prepare. Last night, we had it with Ginger Chicken Pad Thai and Hot and Sour Soup.
nickroosen at 3:51PM on 03/02/09
I'm all over the greek yogurt thing!! ...I even mix in fresh granola and add some honey! Yumm!

I have recently become addicted to the caramel panna cotta at Miette in the SF Ferry Building. And also, their bergamotte, and salted, caramels.
Oh, and speaking of caramels, the rose caramels by Michael Recchiuti are my new favorite aphrodisiac.
Cheers,

I am seeking to re-discover home delivered milk which I had growing up in London. Has anyone tried milk from Manhattan Milk and can tell me about their experience of it? Are the delivery guys like the retro milkmen of yesteryear?
nadia at 4:56PM on 03/02/09
this is mortifying -- but -- tangerines. i got them recently in my organic produce delivery box and realized i don't think i've had them since i was little. i always just go for oranges or clementines when i'm buying them. but oh my they were so juicy and flavorful!

Barley as a breakfast cereal w/ a bit of butter - really good

1. Greek yogurt (thanks to a new local Greek place here in NNJ that serves it as a dessert, w/honey and walnuts)...for you Fage fans, that's my favorite storebought kind, but I've learned that it's no longer being imported from Greece; it's made in upstate NY!
2. Zaatar, a Middle Eastern spice blend of sumac, thyme (sometimes marjoram), salt, and sesame seeds, which is spelled different ways depending on whether it's Israeli, Syrian, Morroccan, etc. Zaater, Z'ahatar, whatever they call it, I'm addicted! Mix it into Greek yogurt (see #1), add some olive oil, and serve it with pita chips. YUUUUM! I served it at a SuperBowl party, and people really liked it. *This discovery, btw, was made all of 3 weeks before it was featured on the Top Chef episode where the chefs went to Le Bernadin...turns out the gorgeous Eric Ripert has been using it there for a while. Now I've seen it on menus in at least two local restaurants...weird!
3. Crosnes, which I first saw at the Union Square (NYC) Greenmarket last fall. They're tubers--tiny ones--and in the box at the stand where they were also selling gorgeous tiny potatoes, I have to be honest; they looked like a pile of maggots. But they're delicious, cruncy, starchy little things. Who knew?
Curlz at 6:47PM on 03/02/09
I'm embarassed to say that I tried Lamb Chops for the first time over the weekend! They were amazing and really simple to make. I just marinated them in some Italian seasoning and pan-seared them.
cookieyi at 7:01PM on 03/02/09
Pineapple- I've always hated all tropical fruits and would pick out pineapple out of any dish I was served with it. A few weeks ago it started appearing in all of my dreams, rather bizarrely, so I ended up buying some last week to try. It was so good that I've eaten it for breakfast every day since.
laurakitty at 7:27PM on 03/02/09
Turbot...its such a....creamy yet flaky fish. Its butracyeous!
Adzuki beans: Ive known about them and used them before...but i'm rediscovering them. Its amazing how they're a pseudo chocolate!

In no particular order, as a result of a recent infatuation with Spanish foods (not that these are all uniquely Spanish): (1) high quality achovies (the ones I tried from the Cantabrian sea were spectacular), (2) Urgelia cheese and (3) caper berries.
mangiatoilgatto at 8:46PM on 03/02/09
Fregola, a wonderful toasted pasta or perhaps a grain from Sardinia where it's traditionally made with tiny clams. I've cooked it like rice (using stock) and then finished it by sauteing in butter and adding sauteed mushrooms.
85379b at 9:27PM on 03/02/09
ancient harvest corn and quinoa spaghetti. it's whole grain, so i don't feel too guilty when i eat it, and the texture is really fantastic, firm and chewy. i actually like it better than barilla.
cybercita at 9:49PM on 03/02/09
I've been using Zoe Life powdered drink mix for a couple of weeks now and notice the difference already! It's listed as an all-natural, made from 13 real fruits and vegetables, sweetened with Stevia, no artificial chemicals, only 25 calories. I've been mixing it with water or juice and putting it into popsicle trays for my kids and I. It also tastes great in my morning yogurt and in smoothies.
mandybre at 10:33PM on 03/02/09
Ox tails, so flavorful and delicious!
Firefly or Sweet Carolines Sweet tea vodka, mixed with lemonade, best Arnold Palmer ever!
Cucumber vodka, delicious with sprite or 7-up.

eggplant. Odd, but it was always one of those things I refused to try when I was a kid. God now though it's freakin great.

The crespone salami in natural casing from Zingerman's. I've never been much of a salami eater, but I've been converted. This stuff is like buttah......

Ricotta Cheese...for breakfast, with cinnamon and sweetner. I'm doing low carb and this feels like eating cheesecake for breakfast.

Hi soozm32. I'd almost forgotten about HD's yummy Sticky Toffee ice cream. My husband and I were addicted to it for a while; I'd never thought I'd turn down chocolate before.
BTW, Jamie Oliver has a good Sticky Toffee Pudding recipe in his "jamie's dinners" book.

@mangiatoilgatto - I just had caper berries recently, too, and I'm obsessed! They're so meaty and they have all that good vinegary saltiness of regular capers.

Raw milk. It's the best milk I have ever tasted. I tried to skim off the fat to make butter, but I didn't have a good vessel to put it in to do that. I made good pancakes as well.

The best, the VERY best fish I've ever had was served by my sister in Alaska in a fish taco. She's an amazing cook, but this fish...Black Cod cheeks! Hardly ever or maybe never, found in a store as the fishermen keep them for themselves. I dream about that fish......
SueZee at 8:36AM on 03/04/09
I've become obsessed with Great Harvest Bread in the past few months. It's soft, full of flavor, whole grain, and unlike my crusty home-made (which I also love). Their Spinach Feta and High-Five Fiber (w/ millet and flax) are my faves.
Roasted Tofu is also 'amazing' marinated in ginger, teriyaki and garlic. Just until it's a little crispy...perfection alongside some roasted zucchini.
toasteebagel at 8:45AM on 03/04/09
@Noxturne: I am so with ya on that Cucumber Vodka, tried it recently and it was good. I also like Pomegrante Vodka with sprite. Then again, I like any kind of vodka with sprite. Always seems to produce pleasing results.
@SueZee: You took the words out of my mouth-well sort of. I do not like fish except shellfish; however, I tried Butterfish and was glad to be sitting because if I wasn't I would have fallen to the floor. Talk about *SWOON* WOW. From what I understand, Butterfish is black cod but it's made Hawaiian style. I tried this at a restaurant called Roy's and I wanted to order 17 dishes. I have been dreaming of having this dish again since the beginning of February. I can't believe I love a fish dish this much. It's insane. I think I am going to have to order the fish online and have it delivered. It's the only way I am going to get it I think.

We joined a CSA last year and were exposed to a couple of new vegetables. Garlic scapes and pea shoots were among my favorites.
Found a fromagerie in Green Bay, Wi which had the most amazing, mild-salty crunch rind and rich, smooth, tangy, buttery interior. It was from Spain. The name escapes me, the the memory will remain forever.
Our new discories and cook dabbling is with grains. We'll be trying kasha tonight. Have to let you know how it goes.

@toasteebagel, I love Great Harvest Bread! While I'd take crusty homemade bread over GH anyday, as far as sliced bread goes, it's hard to beat. Their Honey Whole Wheat is my favorite, but Apple Cherry Pecan and Cinnamon Raisin Walnut are also amazing, and I had a sample of one of their breads that I think had Asiago cheese in it, which was also very good. And there are so many more flavors I'd love to try that are on their site but I haven't had a chance to eat yet (Pizza? Spinach Feta? Mediterranean Olive? Mmm...).
@therealchiffonade, I am so jealous. Homemade cavatelli sounds fantastic right now.
cycorider at 12:37PM on 03/04/09
Potato chips. They're slices (aka "chips"), of a tuber called a potato. Sliced moderately thin, deep fried, and generously sprinkled with salt. Truly delicious.
They came with my lunch today. Another exotic concoction called a "grilled cheese sandwich". I haven't figured out what it's made of yet.
schmonsequences at 1:06PM on 03/04/09
For me, just the combination of shrimp and cheddar, more than any food in particular. I always thought seafood or shellfish + cheese sounded like a pretty unappealing combination, but I've been reading Kenny Shopsin's "Eat Me" and he has an open-faced sandwich in there with shrimp and cheddar, and it's unbelievably good.
Oh, and here's a pic I took of the sandwich:
