Favorite food on "The Day the Music Died"

I am wondering if there are any Serious Eats readers who remember "the day the music died." What was your favorite food back then? Mine was Chef Boyardee pizza in a box. My girl friends would come over and we would make our own pizza, which involved letting the dough rise, opening the can of pizza sauce, and opening the package of cheese.

What year was the day the music died, are you talking about when Buddy Holly died? Cause if that is the case I was not born yet. Or are you talking about when that guy wrote that song Bye Bye American Pie song, I was born then when that song came out.

If it was in 1959, then I'm no help. If it was in the early 70's when American Pie came out, it was Butoni Toaster Pizza. I LOVED that stuff.

@pjracz10 - I was asking about February 3, 1959, the day of the plane crash. But it will also be fun to see the comments from those who remember when the song American Pie was released.

Don McLean ! loved his stuff! I was convinced american pie was pizza

ROTFL, I was born in 1964, but I remember that Don McLean song, and when I hear it now it is like someone scratching a chalkboard, because they so overplayed that tune. Always someone at a campfire who had a guitar would HAVE to play that tune and my ears would start bleeding lol. So when the Don McLean song was played it would have been typical campfire grub.

In '59 it was probably homemade chicken and dumplings (don't want to age myself - so figure I was over 3 and under 8) :0) - not sure of the actual food. But it was a time when things were consistently made from scratch.

Fast forward to around 1972 / 73 when Don McLean came out with the song - I can tell you for a fact it was Pizza and Beer ! I was a DJ at a campus radio station. Learning the ropes of timing, when to take breaks without a song ending while you're in the bathroom etc. etc....The song being around 15 minutes - gave me ample opportunity to eat 1/2 a pizza and down a few beers !

@Ribster LOL I always loved those gift songs too, but our manager knew if I played more than one a night that I was doing things I shouldnt be doing. lol

I was 9 and I remember it well. I was already a huge fan of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper - still am. I don't know about February foods, but my special favorites were steamed clams with drawn butter and tomatoes fresh from the garden. I also loved steak, rotisserie chicken and any of my mother's desserts. I should have lived in the a southern climate because all of my favorites were spring/summer foods like strawberry shortcake, strawberry rhubarb pie and peaches & ice cream. Memories of the great loss of the three great talents (Ritchie was only 17, Buddy 22 and Big Bopper 28) come flooding back to me when I hear Buddy's song "That'll be the Day", even more so than "American Pie". .

I'm pretty sure my favorite food was baby formula. That's the year I was born.

I guess we all remember what we ate and what didn't seem repulsive to eat during crises.

Hahaha, yeah... uh, my mom wasn't even alive then.

February 3, 1959 was my 4th birthday - that makes today #55!
I don't remember much about what I was eating back then, but know
that I had angel food cake for my birthday party. It would have been
the kind with little confetti sprinkles in it and sugary sweet pink glaze.
