eatin' bugs?

So it's like this...when i was younger, my father regaled(or, in many cases, grossed me out) with tales of ethnic food involving prepared insects or related critters he had discovered while in the navy...I have in my short life also heard of such dishes--crickets and rice, fried ants, roast spiders/scorpions, and of course the ubiquitous wasp/worm in a popsicle.

And lately i've gotten curious about this. is it really feasible for me, as a lower-middle class bachelor living in the american southeast, to cook with bugs? what recipes are available? where would one go about getting supplies? what sort of expertise would I need to go about eating said critters without inadvertently poisoning myself?
the whole idea is very interesting to me, as it is largely unexplored in western cooking. I'd love to experiment a bit in this area, but bottom line is, i'm also worried...there's probably some kind of reason americans aren't already eating them en masse(and for that matter, the fact that they needed ingredients are sold...literally nowhere). any thoughts?
