Cooking for your Valentine?

What are you doing for your Valentine??? Cooking or going out??

Valentine's Day [SE Talk, 6:01 p.m. on 02/03/09]

Well, I wanted to cook, but now his apartment is going to be invaded with his roommates' friends all weekend. Grrr....

I am cooking my first-ever ribeye steak. I don't eat much meat, but he loves it, and I wanted to do a nice dinner in this year. So we'll have steak with potato, a veggie (haven't decided which yet), and molten lava cakes baked in little ramekins for dessert. For myself, I will probably poach a fish.

I am being banned from the kitchen by my OH...:-) It's a first, so I'm curious to see what happens. Actually, I'm not entirely correct - he did cook an amazingly ambitious dinner for my birthday this past October (which inspired me to start this thread back then), so I'm really curious to see what happens now...

It's odd not to do any cooking and planning myself though (I reckon it's just hard for me not to be the one in charge:-)), but he wouldn't let me, even though I keep asking if I maybe, possibly could do something. Nope, not allowed this time.

Honey has a business trip, leaving Sat. evening, and I have to work Sat. evening, so I'm making brunch, which will probably be salmon scrambled eggs, some kind of baked good (haven't decided if I'm baking, defrosting the last 2 pieces of homemade coffee cake, or buying something), and either mimosas or fuzzy mimosas (adding peach schnapps). Meh, I got a coupla days to work it out.

DH has asked for tartare, so technically there's no cooking involved there. But that's just the appetizer. Not sure yet what else will be on the menu.

I'm planning to make petit fours - the really old fashioned kind with layers of cake covered in poured fondant. Not sure how they'll come out, but they're hard to find at a bakery anymore, and he likes them. Should be an adventure, which generally works for me.

I don't do restaurants on Mother's Day or Val Day. The first Val Day I spent with my present BF, he insisted we go out. I relented. Favorite restaurant. Entree served not-so-piping-hot. He admitted that less-than-perfect entree at a generally top notch restaurant proved my point. At least I know I won't get any arguments!!

Unfortunately, we will not be in the same place on Val Day this year :( :( :(. I'm in Clearwater continuing to pack and he's in ATL working like a demon. He did send me this beautiful bouquet yesterday. Pardon the makeshift "display" it's a quilt thrown over a humongous roll of bubble wrap.

@chiff - the bouquet is absolutely gorgeous! I didn't even notice the display:-)

Nope, we are going to this really small, romantic Italian place. Just made reservations for the 9:15p sitting.

Well, he suggested that we make maki, as we did once before. I said I wanted to still be in a relationship with him the next day, so we will not be making maki again. It will most likely be something simple that we rarely eat, like lamb with a good curry spice rub. Maybe with couscous and smashed peas, and some fresh pita.

Since it is a Saturday, I'll be getting up to make a special breakfast for my husband and then we are going out to our favorite little Italian place. We chose somewhere off the beaten bath so that it will be a little more low key.

I'm making x-rated red velvet cupcakes. (link not safe for work!!)

I'm doing this because my SO made a smart-a** comment about what he wanted for Valentine's day dinner. He adores red velvet cake and the topping is just what he requested. So there.

We are going out--we have friends that own a quaint little restaurant and we go there every year for our Valentine's dinner. I cook dinner a LOT, so I am relishing not cooking that evening : )

I made oreo cookies in the vein of Westville Bakery's cookies in the shape of hearts. http://kitchengraffiti.blogspot.com/2009/02/homemade-love.html and I'm going to make banana-stuffed French Toast for breakfast.

I'm a grad student with this fellowship that lets a bunch of people live in the old governor's mansion for a couple years rent free (WHOO!) But part of the deal is having these seminars where a speaker comes and then we all eat. The school gives us a budget of 300 bucks to feel 30-60 people.

And that doesn't include booze. Seriously.

There's one this Saturday, so that's my cooking for the big V: Polish and Ashkenazic food. Not so bad, but I'd honestly rather have some guy make me something. [pout pout]
