Comfort Food
A cat bit my finger earlier today, like, hard. Like, drew blood hard. I'm too chickenshit to go to the doctor, even though I'm sure it's in the process of getting infected as we speak.
Rather than medical attention, I need comfort food. Yummy, gooey comfort food that ideally can be prepared with one hand as my other is now freakishly swollen and in pain.
Tell me your favorites that aren't too labor intensive. This cat bite actually comes at a decent time, I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow ...

Nothing like a good, comforting antibiotic. Yummy.

Pumpkin, really, you need to check the animal's vaccination history. I don't mean to be a bitch, but getting severely bit by an animal and getting infected doesn't have anything to do with grocery shopping tips.
HeartofGlass at 6:17AM on 02/27/09
You know what I like when I've been bitten by an animal and am possibly infected? What makes me feel all warm and snuggly and better? A VISIT TO THE FREAKIN' DOCTOR!!!
Get your butt to the doctor. When you get home you can have some mashed potatoes and gravy.
chisai at 7:21AM on 02/27/09
A cat of yours? If it's a stray, get to a doc. If it's your cat, check that vaccination record. And go to the doctor anyway. Don't take chances.
If your hand is swollen, you don't need us to tell you to go to the doc.
therealchiffonade at 7:28AM on 02/27/09
how about the cat that bit you gumbo?!
Pavlov at 8:06AM on 02/27/09
cat bites are notoriously nasty! get thee to a dr! I know they are terrible beings, and the chance of dying of gangreene almost seems more pleasent than a trip to see someone weilding large sharp instrumaents, but please quell the queasies and get off your butt! if you need further incentive, I'll give you a quarter if you go! ;-)
huneybumper at 8:18AM on 02/27/09
I work in a vet clinic and you NEED to be seen by a doctor. Even if your cat is clean, healthy and not an outside cat - their saliva can still be full of bacteria and infections happen VERY fast. One of our techs was bitten and her hand swelled and we rushed her to the ER. She was in the hospital for nine days. She would have lost her life or possibly her hand had she not gone in. I really hope you went and got this looked at.
radley24 at 9:01AM on 02/27/09
My male tomcat bit my finger a couple of years ago and I just went to bed thinking it would be better by the next day. WRONG! It blew up, turned almost black and was throbbing! Cat bites almost always become infected .... go to the doctor ASAP!
caramel at 9:45AM on 02/27/09
We're withholding all comfort food tips pending a doc visit. We'll need a note as proof, plz.
Laurel E at 9:51AM on 02/27/09
Former Humane Society and vet clinic worker here: You have a potentially life threatening scenario on your finger. I have seen many cat bites that progress to the point of the red line traveling up your arm with infection in a matter of hours! Go to the doctor ASAP. I have scars to back up my plea.
robincat at 10:05AM on 02/27/09
Pasturella sp. and soft tissue compartments...you need antibiotics now, food later.
sither at 10:16AM on 02/27/09
Yep! It becomes infected in just a few hours. My cat bit me at around 10 til midnight and by 6:00 am my finger was seriously infected. The pain was almost unbearable and I can take pain (I've had 2 children - natural
birth - no medication.) By the time I got to the ER I was literally rocking back and forth in the waiting room chair to avoid screaming!!
caramel at 10:20AM on 02/27/09
I was bitten by a dog a number of years ago, and as a result was forced to undergo (and still have to get boosters every couple of years for the rest of my life) Rabies treatment, which served to not only put me in a large amount of pain, but also made me really quesy.
Long story short, when I got home from the initial trip to the ER, where I had been bandaged and given the first part of the series, I asked my friend who picked me up (I couldn't drive, obviously) to drop by the local Tokyo Joe's (why aren't you in Minnesota???) for a bowl of teriyaki. When I got home, I found that I was sickened by the smell and taste of it, but for the next three days *lived* on delicious, yummy, whole grain toast and natural peanut butter!!!
Ah....I still have sweet memories of how good it tasted and settling to my stomach it was. To this day, I still eat toast and peanut butter when I am quesy.
Traveller at 11:07AM on 02/27/09
wow, i was going to say eat LOTS of garlic for the infection .... but honey, you'd better get to the doctor.
save the comfort food when you get home, in fact on the way home from the doctor pick yourself up a pizza from your favorite place and eat 4 slices..... with lots of garlic powder.
pooch at 11:51AM on 02/27/09
AND PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW YOU ARE!!!!
pooch at 11:52AM on 02/27/09
Yikes... first order of business is to get to the DOCTOR, please!! Then a batch of brownies to provide warm gooey comfort. Hugs!
sbelle at 11:56AM on 02/27/09
Honestly, I love making macaroni and cheese from the box (if you can - get "Wacky Mac!"). Add lots of milk, butter and extra cheddar cheese to melt to make a gooey yummy bowl of comfort!

Chew on That
P.S. You should probably go to the doctor.
Chew on That at 12:11PM on 02/27/09
OMG, go see a doctor!...and then make some enchiladas or chile rellenos.
mayoxqueen at 12:22PM on 02/27/09
Well, have you seen the doctor yet? Like @Laurel E said, we're withdrawing all comfort food talk until we hear you have.
brooke29 at 12:40PM on 02/27/09
@pavlov -- That was hi-sterical.
We want to see a doctor's note!!!
juliebugsmama at 1:52PM on 02/27/09
Definitely make sure to take care of yourself!!
In terms of comfort food that wouldn't be to labor intensive, Amy's frozen mac and cheese is one of my favorites. Easy enough to unwrap and stick in the oven.

ditto what they all said. if you're too chickenshit now, imagine how much worse it will be if you wait until it's so bad you have to go to the ER. much worse!
we're pushy but it's tough love!! :)
megannesta at 5:11PM on 02/27/09
@PumpkinBear - just checking in to see if you have updated us all that you went to the doctor and all is good! Please let us know how you are!! I have my vet tech friend concerned about your condition now too...:-)
radley24 at 11:33PM on 02/27/09
@pumpkinbear --- WHERE ARE YOU?????
pooch at 11:38PM on 02/27/09
I have to confess that my concern is shifting to annoyance, a bit. I hope Pumpkinbear is alright, but posting about how you are ignoring a serious medical condition with a tangential, forced reference to food seems a bit attention-seeking--especially if you just 'leave' the comment and then don't update.
I really hope you are okay, given how serious this could be--as @Traveller, radley24, robincat, caramel, and many others have pointed out, very graphically.
HeartofGlass at 8:22AM on 02/28/09
pour bleach on the wound, sip a glass of brown whiskey and then kill the cat.
olddad at 1:15PM on 02/28/09
lmao @olddad !! You sound like my Dad!
Ok Pumpkinbear ... time to check in and let us know how you are!
caramel at 2:14PM on 02/28/09
Please go to the doctor. My cat bite me several years ago and I took comfort in a bottle of wine. The next day I had red lines running up my arm. Yes it was infected and I could of died had I not gone to the E.R..
chardonnay at 2:41PM on 02/28/09
@Heart, I don't think PB is the type to make a dramatic, attention-seeking exit -- more likely she's dealing with whatever and hasn't gotten back online and doesn't realize we're all waiting to make sure everything is okay.
On the other hand, yes, I am worried. She posted in the wee hours of the morning after being bitten during the day. I'm guessing she didn't take herself to the doctor in the middle of the night, so she might have gone this morning...or not.
This makes me think that we ought to have some sort of "lifeline" way of contacting people if we're worried about them. I'd be happier if I knew someone called her and found out that her Internet was down or something.
dbcurrie at 3:19PM on 02/28/09
Sorry guys! The hospital thing was a two day ordeal. First time I was in I got two shots, a finger splint, and prescriptions for anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. It's difficult to type because of the splint, but I wanted to thank all of you for freaking me out with your concern. I seriously wouldn't have gone to the doctor had you guys not pointed out how bad it could get. I have to go back to the doctor in a few days to make sure I'm healing right, if not they may need to cut open my hand to flush out the bacteria. After my doctor's visit today, I got fast food- which I guess is comfort food, right? It was yummy. Thank you for your concern everyone, you guys are the best.
PumpkinBear at 8:18PM on 02/28/09
Glad to hear you're all right and taking care of it! Hopefully, you're healing right and they won't need to cut it open. And whatever tastes good to you right now is your comfort food, be it a burger or a bowl of soup. Feel better!
brooke29 at 8:22PM on 02/28/09
Whew! Thank you for updating, and keep us posted! And anything that doesn't involve chopping is comfort food! Sorry if I was angry and upset--kind of like parents get when kids come home late and don't call--you fear the worst!
HeartofGlass at 8:38PM on 02/28/09
Glad to hear that you're all right. Hopefully it wasn't a finger on your dominant hand. But if you need something comforting and easy to eat, try a creamy cheddar soup and drink it with a straw if it's awkward eating with a utensil.
How long have you had this cat? Rescue? Ferral? A friend of mine who owned a diner had a feral cat that slurked around the premises (probably attracted to the dumpster rats), and when she had kittens, he tried to adopt two of them. They ended up being named Gage and Church (Stephen King's Pet Semetary cats), which might tell you a bit about their personalities. We have three kitties from rescue groups, all of whom are well behaved. Hope your kitty learns some manners. Get well soon!
dhorst at 8:43PM on 02/28/09
PB get a giant stouffers mac and cheese and big jug of cheap wine and I'll be over in an hour. PLEASE take care of yourself hun, and keep us informed?!!!
huneybumper at 8:58PM on 02/28/09
Thanks for letting us know you went to the doctor. We were getting a little worried about you. Hugs!
caramel at 9:08PM on 02/28/09
Thanks again, guys. Stouffers is an excellent reccomendation! God, I haven't had a frozen meal forever ...
@dhorst: I began to freak out because I realized that I didn't know anything about the cat that bit me. My brother asked me to watch it for ONE day on Christmas Eve and he never came back to get it. He seriously moved to Texas and didn't tell me. I had to find out from other family. He's a total jerk. Anyhow, I didn't have any problems with this cat and then the other day it totally wigged out on me and sunk its teeth into my right index finger. I'm a freelance writer and I have three deadlines next week, I have no idea how I'll make them. Also, what do I do with this cat, any ideas?
PumpkinBear at 9:29PM on 02/28/09
Doctor's are a rip off. If it starts to get infect I would go, otherwise going only adds to the doctor-happy society we live in. Its because people go to the doctor for every little thing (along with many other reasons) that Medical insurance is so gosh darn expensive.
Any-who when I hear comfort food I think of meatloaf with a tomato and beef gravy with a side of mashed potatoes and maybe some mac and cheese, yum!
twoojoe at 9:31PM on 02/28/09
Whew! I am so glad that you are ok and thanks for letting us know how you are doing - as you can see, you had us all concerned. Glad it wasn't as bad as I initially was fearing. I was certain you were admitted and on IV antibiotics! Here's hoping your hand heals great so you won't need to have it cut and flushed. Take care and now treat yourself to your favorite comfort foods! Mashed potato's, hot fudge brownie sundae, chips and guacamole are a few of mine!
radley24 at 9:38PM on 02/28/09
So glad you had a doc take a look. I know how it is -- I'm not fond of doctors, either, but sometimes you just have to go.
Take the cat to a humane society/shelter.
Honestly, a pet is something you should choose for yourself, not something that should be a burden to you. And after that one bite, you're always going to be worrying that it's going to attack you or someone else in your home. That's not something I'd want to deal with.
Even antisocial cats can sometimes be placed in new homes. After spaying/neutering, people will adopt them as barn cats around here. They don't have to be friendly, they just have to eat mice. And since they're spayed/neutered, they don't add to the feral cat population.
dbcurrie at 10:00PM on 02/28/09
@pb~cat wise, there should be local groups out there that you can find through your SPCA or local rescue groups that may have suitable placements for this cat that has landed in your lap, may it be feral or otherwise.
Your brother...my foot would be so far up his ass that his tonsils would cry. Sorry; not a PETA person here, just someone who has witnessed animal cruelty due to igonorance.
Writer deadlines..now there is a real problem. Any good friends who you might bribe to type for you in promise of awesome food once you are healed? And hey, check out Craigs List and see if anyone is looking for some quick temporary work.
Stouffers Mac and Cheese is truly a creamy comfort food indulgence that is just heat and eat. Have at it, and enjoy!
dhorst at 10:54PM on 02/28/09
@Pumpkinbear--you left something VERY serious out--do you know this cat's vaccination history? If it isn't vaccinated, you may need to take other precautions. Call your brother ASAP, or have a vet look at it.
I'm an animal lover, but when I fostered a dog and it bit me, I had to take it back. When you have a pet, it's cruel to both you and the pet to have an animal that doesn't fit into your lifestyle and temprament.
HeartofGlass at 6:12AM on 03/01/09
see how everyone was worried about you?????
glad you're okay .... as for the cat, try to make ammends. it's sad to give animals away..... i know it's tough, but chances are it will live out it's life in a cage in some shelter. there are just SO many animals being dumped these days....after being in a home with you, that's a tough one. forgive and forget???? has this cat ever done anything like this before?
pooch at 11:00AM on 03/01/09
PB - I'm so happy you're okay. About the kitty (and my take only)- I like animals, I do, but in a case like this, I'd give it to a shelter. If there had been no infection, the bite wasn't a good thing, but it might not have been a deal breaker. I got from gown cat a shelter that was a biter. He'd attack ankles. I named him Fang, and I really kind of loved him in spite of it. I had him for many years, and over time, the biting did stop. With the infection though - deal breaker. In your situation though, how could one help but be skittish around it? Because you know that at some point, it is going to bite again. Maybe not in anger, maybe you'll just be playing and he'll get a little overly aggressive, but the odds are, it will. And another hospital run.
And seriously, if that were my brother, it would be worth it to me to go to Texas and kick his ass. That was a rotten thing he did to you.
chisai at 2:48PM on 03/01/09
@HeartofGlass: I actually called my brother from the emergency room hoping to talk to him about the cat's vaccination history, but ever since dumping me with his- oh, did I not mention? TWO cats and DOG, he never answers my calls. I have no idea if the cat's had its shots or where it came from, for that matter.
@ Pooch and Chisai: I haven't decided what to do yet. When I was at the hospital I swore I was going to come home, pack up the cat, and get rid of it right away. Now that I'm looking at him, he's goofy and sweet and it breaks my heart to have to get rid of him. There aren't many no-kill shelters that are currently accepting animals. I actually looked into it extensively and it's the reason why I kept them in the first place. We have this place called SEACCA around here, but I think they only keep cats for 30 days before euthanizing them. I'll have to figure something out because now aside from eating me out of house and home, he's a biter.
PumpkinBear at 3:21PM on 03/01/09
@You should find out if it is vaccinated against rabies, regardless of what you do. Your brother is putting you in danger, and that isn't something to forgive and forget about, even from family.
HeartofGlass at 4:25PM on 03/01/09
Wow! What a horrible ordeal. I hope you are doing o.k. I also did not realize that cat bites could be so dangerous, now I know.
I hope you have had all your favorite comfort foods by now! I like to have pizza in front of the t.v. when I'm down. Delivered to my door so I don't have to leave my p.j.s
whatseatingme at 8:53PM on 03/01/09
You need to keep the cat or have it boarded at a vet or shelter for at least ten days after the date you were bitten if you don't know if the cat has been vaccinated for rabies. This is the standard period for post-bite rabies observation. If the cat should show any signs of sickness during this period, that is considered cause for you to undergo the rabies injections. Very serious business. Although rabies is rare, once you have it, there's no going back. I recommend you take the cat to a shelter or vet. You should have help taking it in and the animal should be handled by someone wearing elbow length leather gloves. You may want to call your local animal control officer who should be affiliated with your local police department. After the observation period is up, you can make a decision about the what you want to do with the cat.
robincat at 10:58AM on 03/02/09
I am so glad you went to the Dr., nothing worse than an infection. I write on another forum also. Over the last two years or more, we started with e-mail addy's without our names revealed to contact one another. Since then several of us do have phone numbers just in case of this very thing, it is a real bond that takes place once you get to know one another, just be careful who you allow into your life. Best of luck with the poor mean kitty. I know "Old Post", I still wish you all the best.
