Best Coffee in New York City?
This morning I waited for 10 minutes for a cup of coffee at Dean & Delucas. It's in the lobby of my work building, so it gets points for convenience, but 10 minutes for regular coffee when milk and sugar is on the side is too much.
It got me thinking, what's the best coffee in New York City and where do I get it ? IMO points are awarded for milk and sugar NOT being on the side, quickness and of course taste.
Which also makes me wonder, is cart coffee really okay to drink healthwise :)

nithya,
If you seek "the best coffee" usually those coffee shops always have milk and sugar on the side - just because, everyone has their preference in terms of how much milk, what type of milk and if one does want sugar or sweeteners.
If you can overlook that issue of having milk and sugar on the side and willing to travel around NYC for the "best coffee," a few great places are:
- Joe, The Art of Coffee (multiple locations; if you want somewhere in Midtown, there's one in Grand Central Terminal and they're quick with the order unless it's espresso drinks; link)
- Abraco (in East Village; link)
- Cafe Grumpy (in Chelsea and Greenpoint, Brooklyn; link)
- Ninth Street Espresso (multiple locations but downtown; link)

Whenever I'm in the city, I seek out a Mud truck. That's my favorite coffee besides Starbucks :)

I really like the coffee at the deli on the corner of Bleecker and Sullivan. Not sure why... but with just a little half-n-half (NOT on the side), it's stinking delicious.
Also, down the street from there (heading toward 6th) is Porto Rico coffee. Just walk by... and breathe. The smell alone is satisfying! Coffee is delicious to drink too. In midtown.. Andrews on 38th between 7th and 8th is great.

@sweethunibabi - I haven't seen a Mud Truck before. Will keep my eyes peeled.
@Foodstuffs, oooh I'm checking out Andrews on Monday...it could be on my way from the train to the office. Although half-n-half? I'll spare you the heart healthy speech I give my dad :-) Thanks!

Honestly, I have always loved cart coffee. Not sure why...maybe because it costs 50 cents and packs a punch. When I used to be a coffee drinker, I also frequented the Astor Place Mud Truck, which is generally excellent.

haha Nithya- I get the health and 'you know won't be able to eat like this forever' speech every morning when i stroll in with my half-n-half coffee and bagel w/cream cheese... though I work in the fashion industry so anything other than a salad or some smelly egg whites is looked upon with extreme disdain. Or jealousy... Good luck at Andrews!

Mud Truck is definitely NOT as good as Joe, Abraco, etc.
I second everything on Tina's list and also would add Jack's Stir Brewed. Roasting Plant is also good, if a bit too little light/bright.

@vegny, I agree with Gorilla Coffee, it's incredible. Not only is it fair trade and organic, but it is locally (Brooklyn) roasted daily, so it's the freshest product I've ever come across.
Check them out at: http://www.gorillacoffee.com/

I happen to love the coffee at La Bergamote, a cute little Parisian-style cafe on 9th Avenue in Chelsea. Its pastries look pretty good too.

It all depends. If you live on "regular" coffee, then Mud truck lives up to its name. It's mud. Stay away. The deli on Sullivan and Bleeker, uh! Try J&B on W 3rd between MacDougal and 6th Ave.
Oh, and the coffee at 'wich in Bryant Park has gone to shit. Not that it was any good to begin with. But it is now laundry water.
I think espressos, cappucinos, and the likes--well, it's very personal. But I can't imagine Starbucks rating anywhere near top 5.

I second the recomendation of Joe Coffee, with multiple locations to serve you.
They're coffee is strong, flavorfull, never bitter or acidic, in the West Coast style. Don't believe the Stumptown Hype - Joe's the Real Deal, and the people that work there are totally nice, always, too.
My girlfriend and I design our commutes around Joe Coffee Shops, it's a must have every morning.

Esparks Coffee in Elmhurst

A vote for Grumpy with a very honorable mention for El Beit. I had a single original Ethiopia Sidamo cappuccino at El Beit and its aroma suggested that of a blueberry muffin. The truth is, there may be more good coffee places in Williamsburg, Brooklyn than there are in all of London, England.
