Any good health food or vegetarian restaurants in Manhattan?

Does anyone know of any?

oh no, now I am getting all homesick for New York. My personal favorite is Candle Cafe on the Upper East Side. They have a more upscale branch called Candle 79 as well. Angelica Kitchen, in the east village, is more likely to turn off the average meat and potatoes type, but I love it. I hear great things about Red Bamboo in the west village, but have always given up on the wait - none of those places (except maybe Candle 79) take reservations. I'm sure there's some less well-known places that are good as well (in fact, I'm sure I've eaten at some of them), but I can't which offhand.

Depends what kind of vegetarian restaurant you're looking for - i agree with candle cafe; it's a good mix of options. red bamboo is great if you like the fake meat kind of stuff. Gobo has some of the fake meat, but more good veggie dishes. Candle 79 is "nicer" than most. When I was in college I loved Dojo - super cheap and casual, though I don't think it's strictly veg.

What kind of restaurant are you looking for?

One of our favorites is Gobo in the West Village.

Agree with Candle Cafe - a little pricey in my opinion, but the apps and salads are so delicious (try the chili, especially) that you can easily make a meal from them.

My favorite veg place is Quantum Leap on Thompson. Everything I or my dining companions have tried has been really, really good, and the prices and portions are very reasonable. Staff is also usually friendly but not obnoxious.

I don't know about the one in the village but the Red Bamboo in Brooklyn specializes in tofu fried to resemble fake meat. I'd skip it.

Dirt Candy, new in the East Village, is one of the best vegetarian restaurants I've been too. Also try Hangawi, a vegetarian Korean place in K-Town.

i gotta agree with gobo. that stuff is downright delicious!

Red Bamboo's pretty good but the wait is usually ridiculous.

I generally don't like fake meat, I'd rather have a good vegetable dish if I'm not eating meat rather than something masquerading as meat... but this place Buddha Bodai Vegetarian Restaurant (5 Mott St.) has such good mock meat. SO GOOD. Seriously. And huge portions.

Good Health Cafe on the UES is pretty good. I've only had one dish so far but it was yummy.

-Wild Ginger (amazing bi bim bap and sweet potato soup)
-Gobo
-Counter
-Red Bamboo (as other posters have said - good for fried, fake meat products)
-Blossom

just to clarify, health food and vegetarian food are mutually exclusive, as a former vegan, when i go out, i usually want incredibly bad-for-you vegetarian food. kate's joint has awesome brunch, chicken-fried tofu and the best faux buffalo wings in the world.
but healthy, i'd go with angelica kitchen, candle cafe or blossom.
split the difference at dirt candy.

Tien Garden on Allen Street

I was pleasantly surprised a couple of weeks ago, My friend suggested we go to Blossom and I wasn't expecting much. As it turned out, the food was awsome! The "cream" of corn soup is great, and I couldn't believe there was no cheese in the "cheesecake!" It's a vegan restaurant, so no meat or dairy products. But they perform miracles with whatever they are able to use.

i went to good health this weekend and it was really quite good. i had a taco made with seitan (i think) and edamame. they also have a lot of vegan options and some free range chicken for non-vegetarian friends.
