Am I the only one on the planet who dislikes ___, or loves ___?
Traveller and cycorider discovered they are kindred spirits in their dislike of bacon. I'm sure both have been asked, "Who doesn't love bacon?" And also asked, "Are you nuts?"
I wonder what other kindred spirits we have here. It might be something you dislike, or even something you just don't have an interest in eating. Or maybe it's the opposite - you love something that everyone else finds disgusting.
If people are surprised at your choice, let's see if you can find your own kindred spirit right here on SE.

I used to despise onions and garlic and many people thought I was nuts. Now, the two ingredients are growing on me, I will admit.

Love: raw tofu (medium to soft). I cut it in cubes and eat it cold out of the box. mmm :)
misskris15 at 12:34PM on 02/03/09
Love: liver (liver & onions, chopped, pate, etc), raw beef (tartare and carpaccio), raw fish (sushi and sashimi), Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, coriander/cilantro (the latter three seem to be the most often hated veg/herb)
Don't care for but can eat: whipped cream, pound cakes, peanut butter, most biscuits (cookies), especially if store-bought
Never, no how, no way: beets, cooked, candied and dried fruit & berries (which includes apple pie and granola, among other things), pumpkin pie, oatmeal

I hate raw tomatos of any kind.
Same with Perky, I can take or leave ice cream.
Do not like rice, except rice made at Indian restaurants, sushi, and rice pudding.
Can't stand salmon (except cakes or smoked) any fish, clams, mussels, or oysters.
I love brussels sprouts.
Headcheese, blut wurst and fish balls.
Ketchup mixed into mac and cheese.
Egg salad.
pjracz10 at 12:47PM on 02/03/09
It is doubtful, since I am a VERY picky ever since I moved out of the house.
Hate: raw/partially cooked garlic, raw/partially cooked onions, cilantro, kaiware sprouts, liver, salty food, buttery food, "sweet and sour," horseradish of all kinds, turkey, pork (except for 3-4 specific preparations), fat
Dislike, but tolerate: fully cooked garlic, fully cooked onions, deep fried food, chicken
Love (stuff I could eat every day): avocado or taro shakes, pho, ramen, udon, rare filet mignon, beef carpaccio, asparagus, blanched spinach, potatoes, raw egg yolks, Japanese mountain vegetables, bamboo shoots, yamaimo, Thai mango curry, steamed: shrimp, crab, lobster, scallops, squid, mussels, salmon (no salt or butter!)
@misskris15: If you're referring to the tofu that you find in the store in tubs or boxes, those aren't raw...
Cassaendra at 12:54PM on 02/03/09
I thought about 2 more things to add to "love" list - tofu and beef tongue (like my Mum used to make, served cold, sliced, with horseradish or mustard).
And one more on "no way" list - cooked fish (raw, smoked and salted is fine)
brooke29 at 12:55PM on 02/03/09
I love brussel sprouts. I hate hate hate olives.
annabanannas at 1:09PM on 02/03/09
Love: Tripe, tofu, durian (yeah, I know), cold beans (I find heating them ruins their flavor - except in chilli), sauerkraut, leutefisk (absolutely love it plain, with just a little salt maybe)
Hate: Bacon, whipped cream, candy floss, cocnut (bad experience), papaya (even worse experience), most melons (my mother used to believe that the only fruits available were melons and force-fed them to my brother and I for years), peaches and apricots (these actually make me gag just smelling them - always have, no idea why), mayo (never, no way)
Take or leave: noodles and rice (I prefer bread), meat (recovering vegetarian - I love fish, but meat I don't necessarily crave too often), pork especially
I will add one more category, since there are foods here that I haven't had:
Would be interested in trying: liver, liverwurst, braunsweigger, pate'
Traveller at 1:09PM on 02/03/09
Loves: tripe, squid, octopus, headcheese and ketchup on my chicken cutlets..
Most people like these but I'm not crazy about: ice cream, potato chips and tomatoes
Italiancupcake at 1:12PM on 02/03/09

- Turnip Greens.
- Sausage.
- Hungarian food.

Dislike:
- Red delicious apples.
- Most chocolate.
- Brussels sprouts.
- WATERMELON.
- Tomatoes unless they're cooked on in something like pico de gallo.
- Crab.
- Salmon.
meg3j at 1:14PM on 02/03/09
Love: brussel sprouts, salt, avacados, olives, fish
HATE: ginger, fennel, anise, beets - all of these in any form.
Alm25 at 1:47PM on 02/03/09
Luv fried chick livers
Can't stand homney ( its a texture thing)
Markbb at 1:49PM on 02/03/09
Hate: liver, bacon, whipped cream, salad dressing, copious amounts of butter, coconut, cheesecake, egg yolks, whole milk
Love: cold leftovers (I never bother reheating stuff that everyone else does...I've gotten weird looks for eating cold pasta, corn on the cob, stuffing, etc), plain oatmeal, uncooked rolled oats, plain pancakes/waffles/French toast, calamari and other semi-random seafood (actually most seafood, but there's nothing weird about liking something like shrimp or lobster), energy bars (I honestly prefer the taste of a Powerbar to gourmet chocolate)
I think that's it for my tastebuds being weird anyway, though everyone's definition of weird is different!
cycorider at 1:58PM on 02/03/09
love: peaches, lemons, all berries, mangos, rare beef, eggs, mashed potatoes, mexican food, avocados, corn, green beans, cheese (not swiss or pepperjack) bread, cookies, and milk.

@annabanannas, I am your kindred spirit. In food.
Laurel E at 2:08PM on 02/03/09
"I hate raw tomatoes of any kind."
Me too! Why is a tomato slice the default option on all sandwiches. I don't want that slimy crap in there ;)
I don't like raw tomato texture but love clams, oysters, mushrooms and many other things that people find texturally unappealing.
bobbob at 2:11PM on 02/03/09
love cooked carrots hate raw carrots
love fish, but it has to be cooked.
love all berries, stone fruits, apples, citrus of all kinds, but hate melon.
lakeloverhh at 2:31PM on 02/03/09
HATE: Mushroom, seafood, Beans Cilantro.
I love a ton of stuff that It's not likely to be worth my time to list. :D
thepirateking at 2:39PM on 02/03/09
@lakeloverhh - I'm the complete opposite of you:-): love fresh carrots, hate them cooked, love raw (as well as cured or smoked) fish, hate it cooked...same goes to tomatoes, too (unless the cooked tomatoes are blended into a sauce or soup, but no chunks, please).
brooke29 at 2:44PM on 02/03/09
I'm not a fan of popcorn but I love anchovies on toast.
smallblondemom at 2:47PM on 02/03/09
Remember folks, it's a list of things people would find surprising, if not shocking that you love or don't love (I don't like to use the word hate, except for Hitler or someone that heinous). We all have food preferences, but what foods would someone likely say, "Wadda you, outta your mind not liking (or liking) _____.
I'll add liverwurst to my love list. I get a lot of crap about that one, but I know I'm kindred spirits with LPC on that one. I would have said brussels sprouts, but they seem to be popular lately.
Everyone is always shocked when I turn down ice cream. Just doesn't tempt me, although most foods, savory and sweet, do.
PerkyMac at 2:48PM on 02/03/09
Love: Innards, sweetbreads, chicken feet, liver, tripe, other nasties; turnips, parsnips, celeriac.
Eh: Mashed Potatoes.
Hate: Mint, peas.
Woo hoo Italiancupcake! Sounds like we might be related.
:D Love St. Joe's sauce! I only had the pig's blood chocolate pudding once but remember liking it.
therealchiffonade at 2:55PM on 02/03/09
After seeing what uncooked bacon looks like, I don't understand how anyone would want to eat it, but I know I'm in the minority on that one.
runnereater at 3:19PM on 02/03/09
hate: lamb, yeast donuts, cinnamon rolls, french toast
love: lots of things but the weird one in this case is pancakes
allot at 3:23PM on 02/03/09
@Brooke- my friend's entire family feels the same way you do about cooked, dried or candied fruit/ berries. They call those items "fruit cooties" and they are to be avoided at all costs.
Kerosena at 3:24PM on 02/03/09
Love: potato sausage, rare steak, fois gras, octopus, sauerkraut & mushroom soup, asparagus, brussels sprouts
Hate: hot dogs, Chipotle burritos (I swear I am the ONLY person on earth that hates this restaurant!), peanuts and peanut butter desserts excluding Reese's, cinnamon rolls, mustard (and I only recently started to like ketchup), alfalfa sprouts, chicken breast sandwiches, raisins
drew13000 at 3:45PM on 02/03/09
Alright, so we have to narrow these down to unusual likes/dislikes. Here goes...
Like: Horseradish on ANYTHING. (I'm Polish, thus it's in my blood.)
Hate: Parsley, blue cheese, the insides of bagels (crust only!), and bananas. Do you know how many recipes include parsley before serving for "freshness"? I feel as if I am sorely missing out on some fresh taste sensation in my meals, but God, I hate the green stuff.
nosillak at 3:45PM on 02/03/09
@Kerosena - finally, someone!! I realise that it's a very large group of various foods, which is probably why I rarely (if at all) meet anyone who shares this particular er, "dislike". Usually, it's more like, people don't love raisins, but eat apple pie and don't mind dried cranberries or candied pineapple, etc. But an entire family like me - I feel like I hit a jackpot:-).
@Perky - people react the same way when I refuse whipped cream or pound cake - they usually don't believe I really don't care for either one! And you were right, this thread makes one feel better despite (or thanks to:-)) having "weird" likes and dislikes.
brooke29 at 3:50PM on 02/03/09
Love: peanut butter and bacon sandwiches, chocolate in any incarnation, butterburgers, tuna noodle casserole
Hate: Carrots (esp. raw) and really any orange vegetable, celery, braunschwieger, gefilte fish (how has no one else noted this?!), iceberg lettuce on anything anywhere
Embackus at 4:07PM on 02/03/09
Yay Laurel E! I was beginning to think I was the only one who hated olives!
annabanannas at 4:36PM on 02/03/09
Love: Hot dogs, stinky cheese (the stinkier and stronger the better), the hottest hot sauce in the world, vinegar, pickled anything, seaweed, onions, garlic (even raw, I can't get enough), tofu, vegetables, especially fibrous dark green leafies.
HATE WITH A PASSION: Banannas, raw tomatoes, eggplant, eggs, milk, melons (except watermelon), pancakes, duck, Japanese mountain vegetables, gelatinous anything, fat (especially pork fat GAG), mussels, clams, oysters, sugar in my tea, cream sauces, mayo, soda.
blackliquorice at 4:37PM on 02/03/09
Love: braunschwieger, canned tuna, mayo(i eat things to have an excuse to eat it), malt vinegar
Hate: raw tomatoes, mushrooms(it's the texture mostly), raw onions, salmon
LizSherman at 4:38PM on 02/03/09
Here's the weirdest, I forgot. I hate alchohol.
blackliquorice at 4:40PM on 02/03/09
Again, just to restate Perky's rules these are surprising hates and loves ;)
Hate: pasta, mashed potatoes, roasted meats including turkey (vegetarian lifestyle aside, I am basing this solely on taste, such as before I became a vegetarian at age 13), gravy, American-Mexican food (salsa, refried beans and so forth), whipped cream, Jell-O, gummi candy, all cream-based sauces, and fruit-flavored yogurts and sorbets, onions, garlic. All juices and soda, including the ubiquitous orange juice at breakfast and diet or regular coke.
Not a huge fan: Less a fan of pizza as I age, though I loved it as a kid and tomatoes in general. Ditto cheese and alcohol.
Love: plain, cooked broccoli and zucchini and cauliflower (unadorned), plain baked potatoes (again, nude), veggie burgers (especially vegetarian fried chicken and sausage), all dried fruits (sorry brooke29),
HeartofGlass at 5:02PM on 02/03/09
@blackliquorice: all? everything? that saddens me just a little.
Laurel E at 5:22PM on 02/03/09
I hated pork, ham, hot dogs, bacon, hardboiled eggs and sausage well before I became vegetarian. In fact, except for lima beans and grapefruit, all of my least-liked foods were meat-based. That said, I am also not crazy about tater tots, nutella or nutella-like spreads, storebought jelly, PB & J, most candies, flavored coffee syrups.
Love: Eating straight-up 100 percent chocolate, speculaas, mint tea, sucking on lemons and limes, frozen bananas, all dried fruit, peanut chews, nut butters, dark leafy greens, toasted chickpeas, whole wheat crackers, oatmeal raisin cookies, farmer's market produce, berries ...
KarynMC at 5:25PM on 02/03/09
@Laurel E I only like red wine. All the rest of it makes me sick! I know, it is kind of sad.
blackliquorice at 5:27PM on 02/03/09
@HeartofGlass. Oh man, ditto "the ubiquitous orange juice at breakfast" especially that Tropicana smooth pulpless orange colored sugar water.
blackliquorice at 5:29PM on 02/03/09
@ drew13000 - i thought i was the only one who hated hot dogs and peanut butter! usually when i say that i get the surprised reaction of "what, do you hate baseball and apple pie too?"
listener at 5:40PM on 02/03/09
Sticking to the unusual ones.
I love peanutbutter, but hate peanut butter cookies. Also hate shortbread cookies, that due to an unfortunate food poisoning event in middle school.
Will not eat raw mushrooms, but can force down if they are cooked.
Love: basically everything else.
cranberrycheese at 5:47PM on 02/03/09
Ah yeah, I'd forgotten that I detest all alcohol - wine, sake, beer (worst), all types of whiskey...because I hate the smell. Fortunately, if I drink it I go to the hospital, so it's not a big deal.
Not fond of most chocolates, but like white chocolate once in a while.
Love pig's feet/knuckle as long as they aren't brined or pickled -- essentially, only smoked and roasted German style or in soup Okinawan style (ginger and daikon).
@drew13000: You're not the only one that hates Chipotle -- the food there is awful and the service is even nastier.
Cassaendra at 5:57PM on 02/03/09
@blacklicorice--you don't know how happy I was when nutritionists started publishing those articles: 'it is better to eat the fruit than drink the juice--juice is too sugary and has no fiber!' I forwarded it to my father, because I got yelled at as a kid so much for not drinking huge glasses of juice.
@KarynMC--I too, long before I was veg, had a horror of ham in particular, along with sausage and peppers and subs.
As a kid, I got odd looks for not liking pixie sticks, Sweet Tarts, or Jolly Ranchers.
HeartofGlass at 6:35PM on 02/03/09
I hate shredded coconut, dislike raisins, and am not fond of arugula.
I'm pretty much okay with everything else I've ever eaten, although I'm sure there are things that I haven't tried that I wouldn't be excited about.
dbcurrie at 6:40PM on 02/03/09
oh.I forgot to mention earlier ..I hate, hate, hate...strawberries!
Italiancupcake at 7:09PM on 02/03/09
Let's see...it's always easier to list hates than likes, so:
Hate: Raw *red* tomato slices (they make my tongue break out and swell up), mayonnaise, the basic repertoire cheeses (cheddar, mozzarella, ESPECIALLY montery jack *BLECK*) - I really hate cheese on sandwiches, burgers, or in shredded format on things like tacos or burritos; Italian sweet sausage - there is something gross in the spice mixture most places use; pears, canned mushrooms, strawberry ice cream, strawberry flavoured anything, banana flavouring, well done steak, boneless skinless chicken, pop tarts, any of those "kid" friendly cereals (lucky charms, trix, ect); toffee, caramel, fruit juice of all sorts, PANCAKES *haet*
And my #1 most hated food item is:
Sweet Tea.
GROSS
feriorrenna at 7:09PM on 02/03/09
It's not so much that I hate common foods, but instead the specificity with which I can only eat them.
Watermelon must be salted or I can't eat it.
I cannot have a slice of tomato anywhere near (like the same room) my tuna sandwich or I'll hurl.
I hate any kind of packaged sweetened breakfast cereal.
I can't stand Tex-Mex food. I love sour cream, I love guac, but I don't want them all dumped on top of each other on my plate indiscriminately. That said, I love real Mexican food.
I eat umeboshi (japanese pickled plums) like candy. I offer them out to people (and I'm being really nice here, because they cost a fortune), and they mostly spit them out and then ask me if I'm joking. Do I really like them? They're gross. The answer is yes, it's my favorite taste on the planet.
chisai at 7:10PM on 02/03/09
@therealchiffonade: I've also eaten chocolate pudding made with pig's blood and also cookies made with pig's blood...(we call it "sanguinoche" (sp?) )....it's usually served around Easter...good stuff --You're right, a possible relation?! Or a kindred spirit foodie!
Italiancupcake at 7:15PM on 02/03/09
@Chisai: LOL which umeboshi do you like? The small tight, crunchy ones or the huge, loose meaty ones?
My stepmother loves those and always tried to sneak 3 jars into my luggage when I visit. I keep telling her no, it's a waste to give them to me because it's just waaaay too sour (esp. the huge meaty ones).
Cassaendra at 7:18PM on 02/03/09
@Cass - the large, loose meaty ones. As far as I'm concerned, they are the entire reason that rice balls exist. Karikari is good and all but it's an entirely different thing to me. To me they just kinda taste like a kind of sweet pickle (though they're always so attractively packaged, I love how they look!).
chisai at 7:25PM on 02/03/09
Hate: Tofu, Tuna, Egg Yolks.
nsa4eva at 7:39PM on 02/03/09
Love-COCONUT CHOCOLATES, soynuts, soy products in general
Dislike-Ranch dressing, processed cheese, cheese fondue, string cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, steak, real mayonnaise, wasabi, egg yolk (as in over easy eggs, etc), white gravies
EatingVirgo at 7:46PM on 02/03/09
Hey, I just thought of something else:
I HATE CHEDDAR CHEESE.
And, I LOVE grapefruit. Especially grapefruit juice!
meg3j at 7:49PM on 02/03/09
I hate bacon too! Well, discernible bacon; I can eat things minorly flavored with it. Similarly with olives. I also hate cooked fruit (do not mind dried). And pastry pie crust (graham cracker and such are fine). And I almost always hate eggs, although once in awhile if they are well-cooked they are OK, and hard-boiled are always fine, they taste completely different. Will NOT eat hot dogs. Gross! I hate cooked carrots and do not mind raw ones.
Not too many weird foods I love but I will say I love all the weird Jewish smoked and/or pickled fishes. In fact, anything pickled I adore and will eat too much of. I once ate pickled tomatoes until I got sick. And I was in my 20's!
wellred at 7:49PM on 02/03/09
i absolutely detest peanut butter and jelly. and except for a small bag of cheetos once every few years, i refuse to allow any processed or chemically enhanced food past my lips. also, cooked blueberries make me gag.
i love pickled herring.
cybercita at 8:21PM on 02/03/09
Am I the only one who hates brownies made with a box mix? I can't even eat them to be polite. The same for brownies purchased from a bakery, which have the same artificial taste. Brownies must be made from scratch.
Suzzanne at 8:22PM on 02/03/09
Hate: Smoked foods. Honestly, it's like they were salvaged from a house fire Ack.
Loves: Bread & potatoes dishes.
moibec at 8:24PM on 02/03/09
hate: pasta and rice of ANY kind and steak, actually steak houses in general.
love: grilled cheese. with goat cheese, baby swiss and tomato. best hangover food ever.
deliciouslysimple at 9:01PM on 02/03/09
Love:
Bread Crust (I have been known to skin entire loaves)
Pig feet, chicken feet, duck feet
Durian
Despise:
Alcohol, American cheese, yellow mustard, sweet-savoury foods, butter on corn, herring in cream sauce, alfredo sauce, mac and cheese, zucchini, artificial cherry flavoring (the cherry nyquil was the only type available for years, and I vomited every time my mom made me drink the stuff)
Fat (like, cooked chunks of adipose tissue sometimes with skin attached. I'm looking at you, chinese red cooked pork)
American cheese
Aynsl156 at 9:29PM on 02/03/09
I hate strawberries. Not a fan of swiss or feta cheese. Vodka is gross. I will only eat all beef hotdogs. Love cranberry juice. Don't really like water. I like pork way better than chicken.
LizSherman at 9:37PM on 02/03/09
I think I might be the only person out there who hates ketchup on fries, oh yes and nutmeg, oh and apple juice.
ag3208 at 10:46PM on 02/03/09
Oh I forgot, I love pickled herring both regular or in sour cream.
Cucmber salad, same as above.
Cilantro.
Extremely spicey foods except horse radish or wasabi.
The other things I do NOT like that people shake their heads at me is:
Popcorn, the thin layer of what ever always gets stuck in my throat and teeth.
Goat cheese or blue cheese.
Bear claws
Figs
Tapanas (sp)
Duck
Pate
Caviar
pjracz10 at 11:00PM on 02/03/09
Love..my list is endless. Pork baby back ribs. Crunching on course Celtic grey salt like it's my rock candy, Brussels sprouts, vienna sausage with bbq sauce and A1 sauce, potted meat, spam, cocktail onions rolled up in a slice of all beef bologna or pickle and pimiento loaf. English pickled onions,,,,anything pickled. Liverwurst sandwiches with mayo and potato chips. Cilantro, cheeses of any kind, potatoes, onions, black licorice.
Hate... popcorn, canned vegetables, white rice, raw tomatoes, fat or gristle on anything..applesauce, apple juice, watermelon, ice cream.
lamora at 12:54AM on 02/04/09
Love: spreading peanut butter on my pancakes and topping it with a little maple syrup
Hate: brussel sprouts. hamburger pizza.
jmfors at 9:30AM on 02/04/09
Love very flavorful and dark beer: Stouts, Porters, extra hoppy pale ales
Hate all mass produced, yellow, watery beers: Bud, Coors, Rolling Rock, etc.
Barbieri13 at 10:54AM on 02/04/09
Hate: anything that tastes fuzzy - tequila; peach, coconut or banana flavored things (but will eat the real whole peach, coconut or banana)
Love: all the normal stuff
cowprintrabbit at 10:55AM on 02/04/09
Hates: Cooked carrots, cooked peas, low-fat ice-cream, popsicles, PB&J sandwiches, lobster.
Loves: Anchovies, raw hamburger and raw beef in general (yes, I know the risks), licking flakes of sea salt off my fingers, liver and carmelized onions, crispy turkey or chicken skin, okra, scrapple (God, I miss having family on the East Coast...LOL), creamed herring, dulce, mussels and crab legs.
I'm sure I could think of lots of other items, but I'm drawing a blank right now.
momobotx2 at 11:51AM on 02/04/09
Hates: Vegans - come on, no meat?! I was once forced to give up red meat and pork...that was what I like to call my Dark Ages
Loves: Sour Cream - by itself or for dip. Mix in a little adobo sauce for that good tex mex kick, yes!
TheUE at 1:49PM on 02/04/09
It's so good to hear that there are people out there who hate apple juice! It looks like pee and smells and tastes terrible. I just have memories of my brother drinking it in a bottle all the time when he was a baby and I guess I associate it with diapers. Just eat an apple if you want apple flavor! Cider, on the other hand, is great.
Also, Jolly Ranchers and cooked cherries are absolutely disgusting in my opinion.
laurelie at 2:26PM on 02/04/09
A sampling:
Hate: all shellfish EXCEPT for shrimp (yum), full-fat mayo, India pale ale, doughnuts, fried dough. Most "fancy" cheeses and non-cow's-milk cheeses (my SO is distraught). Pink wine. Canteloupe. Red delicious apples. Milk chocolate.
Love: popcorn, citrus, almost all veggies (not jicama), canned baby peas (in the silver can, only), Edy's limeade and lemonade popsicles, iceberg lettuce (yes, part of the "almost all veggies" category, but a special love), poached eggs on homemade toast. Almost anything burnt, especially popcorn and the edges of grilled vegetables.
littlestcapy at 3:07PM on 02/04/09
There isn't much I can say I outright detest. But @chisai~I am with you on the tomato not being anywhere near tuna. Hurlworthy is right, yikes! The tomato makes the tuna taste like dirt to me somehow. Matter of fact, I do not enjoy most fish/seafood and tomato combos. Most don't bother me as much as tomato/tuna, but still.
coffeefrappe at 3:11PM on 02/04/09
I hate ketchup. I have ranted about it elsewhere on this site. Also french fries and Jello.
I love sweetbreads (the organ meat), sauerkraut, stackwiches, and certain flavors of kombucha.
gentlyferal at 3:28PM on 02/04/09
@laurelie- I second with you about the apple juice lol.
pjracz10 at 3:36PM on 02/04/09
I hate apple juice too!
LizSherman at 3:49PM on 02/04/09
Most of my food hates involve condiments. I cannot and will not eat mayo, although that's kind of common. Can't stand the smell of mustard. I hate salad dressing of any kind. Ranch, vinaigrette, anything. I cannot stand the flavors usually, and even if there's a rare one I like the flavor of, the texture of the slimy lettuce leaves makes me want to puke.
I also hate Jello, @gentlyferal.
I LOVE, more than love, soy sauce. It's really bad. It tastes awesome on bread, mashed potatoes, boiled cabbage, just about anything!
Also, @momobotx2 I too love eating bits of sea salt and kosher salt.
Looks like from here I have a salt deficiency or something.... heh. Not true, I swear!
nightowl at 4:30PM on 02/04/09
Hate: Tomato sauce on any "intact" meat, especially if it has bones (chicken cacciatore is repulsive to me), green bell peppers, most cake frostings (cream cheese is a huge exception). Cooked fish. I love butter and I love garlic, but a butter-garlic sauce on fish or shellfish makes me barf. I loathe wine.
Meh: Blueberries taste sort of like perfume to me. If I never ate pizza again I'd probably be okay. Two or three spoonfuls of ice cream is more than enough for me.
Love: Liver, hearts, gizzards, tendon, sweetbreads, tripe, tongue, fat, undercooked bacon, raw beef, raw ground beef with lots of salt, Limburger cheese, blood sausage, Funyuns. I too love umeboshi plums. Also anything excessively fishy, in snack form. And I really like aspic. I bet I would like headcheese if I tried it. Speaking of which...
Would like to try: Headcheese, bull testicles, coxcombs, dragon fruit...
BangieB at 4:41PM on 02/04/09
I HATE apple juice so much. Cider is great, though. I also hate mussels and lobster. Not a big fan of mayo, though I occasionally like chicken salad. The smell of canned tuna makes me gag. I hate anything gritty, like acai berry juice or sorbet.
I love salty condiments, particularly soy sauce (which I can consume by itself). I like hot sauce on my eggs, toasted nori sheets, sauerkraut, kombucha, raw meat (fish, beef, or lamb), raw onions, strong Belgian beers, and stinky blue cheeses of all kinds.
Junie at 4:55PM on 02/04/09
@Junie I used to get in trouble from my mother when I would steal the little packets of soy sauce from her Chinese takeout and drink them. What?! She wasn't using them!
nightowl at 5:13PM on 02/04/09
Love: Offal, blood, any and all nasty bits, snails, fish roe (cooked or raw), dried fish snacks, chili paste, horseradish
Don't care for but can eat: cake, ice cream, cookies, cheese
Hate: carrots, ketchup, milk (just as a drink, dairy products are fine), frosting or icing, soda, coffee, take-out Chinese
fuuchan at 6:27PM on 02/04/09
love, peanut butter on my hamburger
smokey07 at 6:37PM on 02/04/09
love: mayonnaise on pretty much anything, including french fries (admittedly not that weird in europe but I get funky looks all the time in fast food restaurants) french toast and hasbrowns. roasted chicken skin (yes, I know how unhealthy it is). spinach. brussle sprouts. imitation crab ("krab"). ketchup on my mac and cheese.
pretty "meh" on" peanut butter. ice cream (except Jeni's which is half ice cream/half gelato and DELICIOUS). chocolate. caramel.
mayoxqueen at 6:52PM on 02/04/09
oh...and meh to soda pop.
mayoxqueen at 6:52PM on 02/04/09
@Junie: I thought my husband was the only one to drink shoyu. He would grab our 1/2 gallon jug I'd store in the fridge and drink it from the spout in the summer. He also drinks that leftover murky brine from kosher dill pickles.
Cassaendra at 7:06PM on 02/04/09
I HATE CILANTRO. YUCK YUCK YUCK.
natalie731 at 7:23PM on 02/04/09
I love Fish Sauce and hate olives
meechiko at 7:39PM on 02/04/09
I love Vienna sausages and blood sausage.
=) Yes, I'm a Puerto Rican!
StarryRose at 8:01PM on 02/04/09
want: beets (especially borscht, pickled beets, and beet juice, yum!). drinking the brine from natural lacto-fermented pickles. kale. collard greens. beet greens. pretty much every green you can name.
do not want: blueberries. orange juice. blue cheese. peanut butter cookies or any other form of sweetened peanut butter.
producestories at 11:10PM on 02/04/09
It's not like I hate the red delicious apple, but they are definately my least favorite apple of the family. I think it's odd that the 2 people who hate a type of apple chose the same one. And I am curious if your favorite apple is the same as mine. Granny smith.... ?
Someone else made me think of this... icing on cake in stores. Most icings you buy in the store are fine. Whatever they use to make the icings on the cakes they sell in stores, that stuff is nasty and dumped on there in pounds.
blizcheetah at 11:42PM on 02/04/09
@natalie731: 'Nother cilantro-hater here; it tastes like soap, or dust bunnies. How could I forget? Ish.
gentlyferal at 11:43PM on 02/04/09
I'm just skipping right to the hates, because I don't think I have any likes that are that unusual:
GAG!:
Pickles, pickled anything (ugh!!), olives, cottage cheese, hot dogs, cilantro, pudding, pie (I don't like cooked fruit), root beer, anise/licorice.
Most of my hates have to do with either vinegar, or a creamy texture that makes me gag.
GoldenEel at 11:45PM on 02/04/09
@blitzcheetah..Granny Smith is my favorite apple, followed by fuji or gala. I detest mushy apples.
Also, I was a baker back in the day in a cafeteria bakery style restaurant. I had to follow the recipes created by the makers, and frosting included a 5 lb. block of shortening. Made me want to GAG!! From that experience, the only frostings I make are with BUTTER!!! I love me my butter. I don't have anything else in the house besides my olive oils.
Also another love...I love to slurp a gulp of juice out of the pickle jar or the cocktail or English pickled onion jar.
lamora at 12:20AM on 02/05/09
@Smokey07- OMG, I love peanut butter on my burgers but they have to have bacon and raspberry jam on it. lol (I know, I am strange)
pjracz10 at 12:21AM on 02/05/09
@nightowl....Nah, we just love salt too much. Growing up, my dad used to kid with me that he'd have to buy me a salt-lick (you know...the kind that deer like)...LOL. Soy sauce rocks...I love it on scrambled eggs.
momobotx2 at 9:35AM on 02/05/09
Dislike : Wild rice, Saffron, Goat cheese, Eggnog, Lamb and Fruit pies
Love: Potstickers, Italian cream cake, Baileys, Popcorn, Pork belly, Duck and Hot Pretzels!
Nemis at 9:39AM on 02/05/09
HATE: Swiss Cheese, Runny Yolk, Peas, Lima Beans, Roasted Red Peppers, All peppers actually-except sweet and chili, Water Chesnuts, Asparagus, Onions any way, Tomatoes, Jalapenos, Overly sweet icing, Dark Chocolate, rare meat, Berries-except Strawberries, Brussel Sprouts, Won't eat Fat but will cook with it, and Sierra Mist (what is this garbage??), Apple Cider/Juice...I think that's enough for now.
Not a fan of: Beer. Big fan of: Liquor/Tequila/Wine
Starting to like: Fish-as in Salmon, Sea Bass, and Tuna Steaks-that's it. Trust me, this is big. I used to HATE all fish-except Tuna in a can.
LOVE: Salsa (I know, I'm wierd), Honey and Cheese on crackers (I didn't think this was odd, but apparently it is to people), Cheese (except Swiss). I can't really think of anything that is out of the ordinary that I love...
Great thread Perky! :D
Butrflygirly at 10:07AM on 02/05/09
Just thought of another love: Mayo. Can't help it.
Butrflygirly at 10:08AM on 02/05/09
A strange one of mine that seems to be shared by others is a loathing for apple juice, yet a love of apple cider. Seems incongruous. I also love to cook with apple cider - especially great with pork.
I wouldn't eat green olives for most of my life, until I had one in a martini a few years ago. Now I can eat the whole jar.
Beer - I thought it smelled like urine and couldn't even be near it. Now, I'm learning to like it - at least a couple of brands. Never wudda thunk it.
PerkyMac at 10:52AM on 02/05/09
Love: Pickles, Garlic, Cheese, Eggs, Jellies & Jams, Salsa, Popcorn, Pretzel Chips, Rice Pudding, Cottage Cheese, Sweet Potatoes
Hate: Nothing really....just avoid most things I don't necessarily care for but I will eat almost anything.
FrostyGhost at 1:48PM on 02/05/09
Wow - we've reached 100 comments!
What surprises me is how many foods and drinks people despise that I wouldn't hesitate to serve to guests - just assuming that everybody would like "that". Doesn't it make you wonder if someone was truly turned off at your dinner table or picnic?
I'm sure most of us make our food with love and want to please our guests. This has taught me to ask more questions before planning a menu. Actually, it's a reminder. Once, when my girls were young, we had a swimming party and had watermelon - which I thought every child would like (I had meticulously removed every seed). It was sweet and juicy. Every single child guest turned it down saying they didn't like watermelon. They were in the 8-12 age groups. I was stunned. Never hurts to ask, right, or if it's a serious dislike, maybe tell your host?
PerkyMac at 2:33PM on 02/05/09
@Perky: I know how weird I can be so I always ask what people would like and cater to them. You just never know who eats what these days...
Butrflygirly at 3:48PM on 02/05/09
Love (occasionally): peanut butter and sliced dill pickle sandwiches on white bread.
Hate: Pieroggis, gnocci, or any similar blandly filled pasta thing.
whatseatingme at 4:25PM on 02/05/09
@Perky - Good point. There are certain things I always assume are "safe" dishes to prepare for company - pasta, for example. I recently found out that a friend and her husband both hate pasta and never eat it. I, on the other hand, eat pasta multiple times a week. Also, I don't like watermelon, either! : )
Junie at 4:30PM on 02/05/09
I hate soda, always have. I also strongly dislike hmmm... orange juice, apple pie, pizza with red sauce (I just discovered I like white pizza). These are surprising ones as they seem to be very common "likes."
What do I love that's surprising or feel unique for? Nothing, considering who this comment is being read by. If I was addressing my in-laws, on the other hand... you should see the expressions they give me when I talk about some of the stuff I cook for me and hub. They have a very limited range when it comes to food. *Sigh*
alosha7777 at 10:04PM on 02/05/09
PerkyMac, Im also indifferent to ice cream, I certainly would never buy it myself.
I absolutely detest any type of rum or anything with rum in it...and that is quite shocking to everyone since I'm in college and live in a college town.
spetsche at 11:28PM on 02/05/09
Dislike chocolate, esp. dark; adore fried chicken livers--I'm probably the only customer at any Cracker Barrel location to regularly order them, and the waitress always looks at me funny.
Michele Humes at 12:24PM on 02/06/09
love: tongue stew, fried chicken liver, bone marrow
hate: fresh tomatoes, ANY kind of condiments (mustard, mayo, chili & tomato sauce, etc...wont even have fries if it has touched said condiment). Oh and Peanut sauce. yech.
nindi_18 at 3:19PM on 02/06/09
I endure an endless stream of little jabs and sarcastic remarks from my coworkers, once word got out that I don't like tomatoes.
If there is to be an office lunch, it is preceded by weeks of little jokes aimed at me about how everything is going have triple tomatoes on it.
In spite of the fact that I love to try new food, experiment with food, and try things that my coworkers would recoil in horror from (like, say, sushi), my dislike for tomatoes has resulted in me being called things like picky, finicky, and difficult to please.
I figured out how to silence the worst of them though: I just say "I don't have to take this from a guy who won't drink coffee"
kevster at 3:36PM on 02/06/09
I absolutely love everything made of pumpkin... except I'm not too fond of pumpkin pie. But I've used pumpkin puree in place of tomato paste in chilli and spaghetti sauce, and it was awesome!
To add to my dislike of tomatoes mentioned in my earlier post, I also can't abide ketchup. The smell alone makes me feel ill. I love BBQ sauce though, and I use BBQ sauce where most people use ketchup.
If I go to a party or event where burgers and dogs are on the grill, I usually eat mine plain, because nobody ever puts out barbecue sauce. On that note, why is it that certain restaurants will happily give me handfuls of little ketchup packets without even asking, but will charge me 25 cents for a package of barbecue sauce?
I've had friends say, "hey, can I have some fries?" Sure, I say; and then they immediately try to dump ketchup on my fries. When I ask them to put their ketchup in a side cup or on a napkin, they look at me like I'm the bad guy.
kevster at 3:50PM on 02/06/09
I think the only foods I won't eat are those that are spoiled or dangerous when not cooked. My friends and family make fun of me for claiming everything to be "my favorite!".
I would love to try Balut or something similarly interesting.
Laura Flowers at 3:52PM on 02/06/09
love: garlic, my bread, steak, most seafood, mushrooms
hate: canned ham, liverworst, pickled herring, fried lunchmeat, dark poultry meat.
dearrie at 4:09PM on 02/06/09
I swear, Brooke29, if you removed the "Don't care for" section (peanut butter? seriously?), this would be EXACTLY my loves/hates. My wife saw this and made me read it. It's uncanny!
johnhutch at 4:52PM on 02/06/09
Brooke29:
Yeah, I absolutely adore every cole crop except collards. About half the people I know just don't get it. I finally quit resisting the high price of another favorite – beets – when I realized beet greens cook up as luscious as spinach.
But I still can't get behind cilantro. Had some Brazilian cilantro from the farmer's market this summer. My daughter loved it, but all I can say is that it's not as bad as the more common kind. I did actually get a few flashes of herbal goodness flashing through the usual dust/soap flavor.
gentlyferal at 5:02PM on 02/06/09
Hate: Hummus, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, coconut, cauliflower, milk, coffee.
The following items I cannot stand, because they were all I could eat after a traumatic surgery: tomato soup, ricotta cheese, jello.
cyn01 at 10:34PM on 02/06/09
@johnhutch - Yes!!! I feel validated and vindicated, all at once:-)!
As for peanut butter - I grew up in England. I didn't eat peanut butter growing up, but I had Nutella - on toast, pancakes, crepes, waffles...I don't mind peanut butter, but I'd take Nutella over it any time, because it's the taste of my childhood.
@gentlyferal - I hear that people have (or lack) a certain enzyme that makes them love or hate cilantro. I've been exposed to it ever since I was a little girl, so to me, it tastes wonderful. I realise that it does have a very specific taste (my OH doesn't like it, by the way, so I add it to my food separately). Still, it's odd to hear that it "tastes like soap" because to me, it doesn't. All I get is "herbal goodness" :-).
brooke29 at 11:26PM on 02/06/09
Haha, at the people who hate apple juice but like cider. I'm the opposite. I love apple juice but I can't drink apple cider without gagging.
Love: garlic, peanut butter, fuji and honey crisp apples, oatmeal, tomato sauce, sundried tomatoes, water chestnuts, canned pears, goat and feta cheese, tofu, alfalfa sprouts, roasted vegetebles, especially onions and peppers, dried coconut
Hate: raw tomatoes and carrots, baked potatoes, red delicious and granny smith apples, white rice, anything with splenda or artificial sweeteners, can taste it right away, cooked spinach, white bread, red grapes, cheddar cheese, whipped cream, unsweetened coffee and green tea, SHRIMP. The texture just gets to me every time. Gummy candy is gross, too. Blech
usinda at 7:12PM on 02/07/09
Yummy to me: plain yogurt, tofu, any and all veggies, loads o' garlic, extremely dark chocolate (99% Lindt Chocolate), black coffee, beany soymilk (not Silk, but fresh Asian kind), bland foods like plain oatmeal, cream of wheat, popcorn, durian (very stinky fruit), seaweed, fermented sweet rice
I am very unpicky about food, and will eat nearly everything. However I strongly dislike and won't eat: bacon (grossgrossgross, smell makes me gag), any meat, drinking milk straight
