A Weekend in NYC
I get in to LaGuardia at about 9:30am tomorrow for my first trip to NYC since 1995 (and only second ever). I'm staying midtown at the Sheraton.
First question - where do I get breakfast on my way to the hotel (I'm assuming that I'll be doing the M60 bus/N Train combo that Google Map tells me to take).
Next Question - where to I get a sandwich that screams NYC after i've checked in to the hotel.
Final questions - Places to go that you literally can't find anywhere else. Not just a restaurant of a particular type, but a block of restaurants from which to choose (or sample).

I just discovered midtownlunch.com and am exploring. Work has basically stopped for the day.
Please send your suggestions too!

There's a Sheraton at Times Square, one on 53rd Street, one near Columbus Circle and at least one other in Midtown. Can you be more specific?
Sarabeth's on Central Park South near Columbus Circle is a good choice. There's also a Le Pan Quotidian (a good bakery too) on 7th Avenue near 58th St. (also near Columbus Circle). Dean & Deluca Cafes are in The Time Warner Center (at Columbus Circle) & Rockefeller Center (the above ground Cafe - not the one in the subway plaza), but it's not a table service restaurant - order at the counter and sit at the bar or if you can grab a little table) - the stuff is great, though. There's another by the new New York Times building too.
I don't think there's a better NYC-only sandwich experience than a pastrami or corned beef from the Carnegie Deli - it's totally not duplicated anywhere else in the world. Caveat: it is totally a heart attack on a plate. They also have a good New York City breakfast too. It gets a lot of coverage here at Serious Eats; here's just one example - a search will turn up more. And it's equidistant from the two Midtown West Sheratons:

If you feel like a little walk for the best NYC "grab a bagel" breakfast in Midtown, then think about Ess-A-Bagel on 3rd, around 52nd-51st St. It's also an order at the counter and bring it to a table joint (Dean & Deluca tends toward the gourmand). I think they've got about the best bagels in Midtown.

Go to Sullivan Street Bakery on 47th b/w 10th and 11th if youre at the 53rd street or Times Square one.

if you are staying at the one near columbus circle i would suggest walking (or taking the subway depending how much you like to walk) uptown to h&h and grabbing a bagel and then going over the zabars for really good toppings. it isn't the best bagel in new york, but they are quite good and that is a great new york experience. the other option which is really authentically new york, is finding the closest coffee vendor on the street and grabbing a coffee and a bagel. it won't be amazing, but it will be very new york and will allow you to leave a lot of room for the enormous corned beef sandwich awaiting you.

What MMinNYC said. Except I think Katz's has better pastrami than Carnegie. And I would also add Bouchon Bakery or Petrossian into the mix for a quick breakfast/bakery snack.
