Will you succumb to Girl Scout Cookies?

It's that time of year again, boys and girls. The time when little girls and their ever-insistent and overzealous mothers camp out in front of supermarkets to solicit their wares.

Do you buy Girl Scout Cookies? Will you be? I sadly have ordered 3 boxes from a coworker's daughter. It's for a good cause. I think.

I buy Girl Scout Cookies from a friend's daughter and then give them as gifts to other people who seem to be awfully happy to receive them. I'm afraid I never tried a single one. Don't kill me now.

They aren't bad for mass-produced cookies. I ducked them this year because I don't usually have cookies in the house and when they are there I eat too many too fast!

I would like to resist, but they are sold by the most charming, sweetest, brightest little Brownie (not quite a Girl Scout) ever - my grand-daughter!!!

I did. My coworker's daughter sells them.I bought 4 boxes

Yes !!!! I can't wait! Haven't seen any girl scouts out around here yet though.

Too late. Four boxes - 2 mints, 2 samoas -comin' my way soon.

I would love to buy some for my boy, but alas! Not a girl scout to be seen. A shame, since he loves the thin mints. BUT - this year, perhaps I will attempt a homemade batch instead.

Why don't you try them @brooke29?

I will buy if asked--but I'm never asked!

I will be one of the oft made fun of moms. Yup, camped out in front of the stores, hoping the pleading looks of the Brownies and Daisies in our troop sells enough for the girls to reach their troop and individual goals. My gal is really excited about it this (her second) year and is doing pretty well.

I bought a box last year because I like them. But the only person at work putting their kids' stuff out there for all (she's doing it in a pretty low-key manner, I'll give her that) annoys the living tar out of me ... so I haven't put myself down for an order... that and I haven't felt super compelled to buy cookies since I started making my own biscotti mmmmm.

@Heart - I really don't know. Mostly, I just feel that it may be silly to open a box because - what if I don't like them? They most likely have dairy and sugar, so OH can't have them, and I will be stuck with an open box of biscuits I don't care for. I'm also, in general, not a big fan of biscuits, never have been (other than certain home-made kinds). But hey, may be this is the winter of new beginnings for me and I'll find something that looks enticing enough to try...

We'll see how it goes with a PB&J first:-).

Absolutely! Girl scout cookies are one of those foods that don't have to taste good compared to other foods (like your biscotti, @joyyy - yum), they only have to taste like they've always tasted. I've already ordered six boxes and I'm not sure that'll be enough.
Er...in my defense there are three growing boys in my house, one of whom is a food vaccuum of a 13 year old, and I'm 31.5 weeks pregnant. So we "need" lots of cookies.

GS cookies taste better than most packaged cookies. You'd think the companies that bake them would put out a version of the best sellers. Or maybe I'm biased, since I was a GS and was a GS leader when my daughters were GS. Buy them because they taste great, buy them because they help our wonderful girls to become wonderful young women and for heaven's sake - at least try one! LOL @Brooke.

I have only been asked to buy GS cookies from one person and they were in a different state. I said no because I would rather support a local troop. If no one else approaches me, I'll go without or buy them at a store if the little girlies set up camp in the parking lot.

I ashamed to admit it but I like the thought of GS cookies more than I like GS cookies. I still have 3 unopened boxes from last year (out of the four I bought) so I won't cry if I don't buy any this year.

I ordered 3 from a friend of my daughter's. I like them, the hubby loves them and I wanted to help her reach her goal. We'll probably end up buying more from the little girls outside of the Kroger.

Nope. I Don't like them and I won't buy them. My friend's daughter is doing a magazine fundraiser.

I forgot to add; for the Girl Scouts.

love love LOVE the cookies..my sister and I were scouts and our mom was the "cookie distributor" one year. NEVER AGAIN. Thousands of boxes of cookies stacked in the garage is not as cool as it sounds.

We eat a few boxes and put the rest in the freezer for our summer cookie cravings

I bought five! two samoas, two thin mints, and one shortbread.

@PerkyMac, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the Girl Scouts of America had special terms to their account stipulating that the proceeds from all incarnations of those cookies must go to GSA.

Did anyone else see the ice cream flavors with Samoas in them? Interesting...

We've been through a box of samoas and a box of tagalongs (was it my imagination or were tagalongs off the market for a few years?). I'd like one more box of each before the season passes, but that would mean we ate 2 boxes of cookies apiece.

I got one box from a coworker's daughter and one from a mom/daughter team doing their first ever booth outside a store. Little girl looked terrified and her mom was nervous and awkward--not the pushy types at all.

I got food poisoning from a Thin Mint. Now I consider the whole organization suspect.

@brooke29 and everyone who hasn't tried/isn't a fan--I have to say, as a scout, I loved them, and as a tyke used to cajole my sweet-fearing mom to get a box of every kind while I was a scout. Then, when I was taking a class a guy bought a box of Thin Mints for all of us to share, and while not bad, they didn't send me into paroxysms of delight, like they used to--but then again, they weren't frozen. Plus, my favs were always the sandwich cookies and the pb kinds...

I would still buy a box now because the cookies are always high on the nostalgia factor and are way better than most 'boxed biscuits.' Also, the shortbread supposedly makes a very good base for cheesecakes, especially citrus-based cheesecakes and bar cookies, and the thin mints for minty cheesecake bases...

@renzata--I haven't seen any pushy Girl Scouts, as I said, I never see them in my area, or at least only on a very few occasions, and they were always polite. The Boy Scouts selling popcorn on the other hand can be very scary!

@KarynMC - I got food poisoning from a Thin Mint. Now I consider the whole organization suspect.

I'm sorry that you got food poisoning... but you just made me laugh out loud!!!

No. I had a co-worker whom I respected, so I'd buy 5-8 boxes to support his daughter, then I'd give it away to my coworkers instead of eating them. After my mother and I got diarrhea for a couple days from those mint cookies ~25 years ago, we stopped eating them.

Oh and @Perky and @Heart - I'll try one this time, I promise. Once I know my assortment, I'll ask you for advice, how about that? Or can you tell me now which ones I should order and try?

I am a huge fan of the thin mints, I love to put them in the freezer and then crumble them on ice cream. ohhhh yum! But I haven't seen anyone selling them yet, I'll have to be on the look out.

@veggieout ~ I've said it before, but it's worth repeating. There is a special place in heaven for the cookie mothers. It's the most stressful, thankless job - like you can't even imagine, unless you've been there. Money gets lost, cookies take over every square inch of your house, orders get lost or misplaced, tempers flare, kids cry, mothers cry, cookie mothers cry.

I haven't had any in years because I lived in the middle of no where and couldn't grocery shop. My favorites were the thin mints - and I liked them frozen. It's a good thing I didn't have a big freezer back then, because I would have lived on them and lost the farm.

@brooke29--from what I know of your palate, I think you might like the Thin Mints and the Samoas (which are chocolate-covered shortbread with a hint of coconut). Again, I think for most of us yanks it is more of a nostalgia thing than anything else--although, like l said, as a kid, I went nuts for them. Even you only have one or two, knowing you, you can have fun 'playing' with the rest of the box in your cooking, even if the OH can't eat them!

It's not a matter of "will I." It's a matter of exactly how much I'll end up buying. I generally put in a couple of enormous orders a year. Massive amounts of Thin Mints, Samoans, and it used to be their Lemon De-Lites (no longer made, which kills me as they were the best cookies the Girl Scouts ever made), and these lemon sandwich cookies.

I actually don't eat that many of them. I give them away. I know a lot of people who don't have access to 'em and for them, they're the perfect hostess gift. A couple of boxes and they're thrilled. I have a sneaking suspicion that my best friend keeps inviting me to dinner for the Thin Mints. :-)

And yeah, I really do believe that Thin Mints can only really be appreciated frozen.

@ brooke~ tisk, tisk, take a chance.
i always get thin mints, peanut butter patties and a peanut butter sandwich.

Probably not this year. I have thin mints in the freezer from last year. Unless of course, DH brings some home.

I actually like the thin mints, but the best use for them is to smash them to smithereens and put them into homemade vanilla ice cream. That will have to wait until summer.

We don't get girl scouts selling them around here. I'm tempted to order a box online, but the thought of eating a Samoa is both tempting and terrifying.

Tempting in that they're oh so good, terrifying in that I feel as if I have shaved off weeks, months off of my lifespan by consuming one.

Hell I was a girl scout, thousands of years ago. They don't sell rock cookies like I did. You bet I will buy them.

@fuuchan - but what good is a longer life without Samoas?

I like mine with a glass of red wine - I figure that mitigates the damage a little bit.

Say what you will about thin mints, they suck when paired with wine :-)

@cowprintrabbit--I've never heard of wine/alcohol pairings with different types of cookies. Perhaps you should forward that marketing idea to the scouts!

Who can resist Girl Scout Cookies???

I doubt I'll buy any... it's been a few years. (I don't really know any Girl Scouts or parents of Girl Scouts, so I've never really been presented with the temptation for quite some time.)

Oh, already done! And 5 boxes at that...3 boxes of Thin Mints, 1 Lemonade and 1 ThanksALots. I'm a sucker for Girl Scout Cookies...plus I'm stocking up because I thought they were de-emphasizing the cookies or something?

Chew on That

Not particularly. If I want cookies, I make them. That way I know what goes in them. If I want to make a donation to an organization, I will give them a check.

I have to agree with HeartofGlass, the Boy Scouts chase down people in parking lots around here, tapping on your windows as you pull out. It's annoying and dangerous.

I imagine the husband will pick up a couple boxes of Thin Mints and Samoas. I'm not a big fan of GS cookies, but I'll have a couple of Samoas and try not to think about all the trans fats in them.
