Why is there no A Hot Dog Today?
Just wondering why there is no specific blog for Hot Dogs? If I am not mistaken it is a NY staple and it just seemed like it would fit quite naturally along with Slice and AHT.

Hi, Stewmeat. I started Slice and A Hamburger Today because I had a personal passion for pizza and burgers—specifically sliders (but I had to expand AHT to burgers in general b/c an all-slider blog would have been too specific, even for me). I do not have the same passion for hot dogs. To do a hot dog blog in a similar vein would require the same level of passion among someone on the Serious Eats staff. Ed Levine here probably has the chops to do it, but he's stretched too thin as it is to delve into hot dogs in a way that would be up to our standards.

Because hot dogs are made from animal bums.

That makes perfect sense Adam, perhaps in the future though, one of the qualifications for new writers should be an affinity for hot dogs. ;)

Perhaps, it is not like the world of hamburgers and pizza.
Take Chicago, there is Vienna and Red Hot Chicago providing dogs to almost everyone in the city ( there are a few Eisenberg places i found). Everyone dresses them similarly, so who is your favorite? When you pick your favorite stand it comes down to the fries. Greasy, twice, fried pulled from the water filled garbage can in the back room and tightly wrapped until they becone one with the bun, of the tasteless shoe strings and crinkle cuts from the freezer in the paper bag? Sorry Portillos, you lose this one.
Good lord, there are no more than a dozen good brands left in the country, and how could you torture yourself to sample some of the rubbery chicken and turkey monstrosities that populate the grocery case? Or even worse, the celery tainted pseudo natural hot dogs that the misinformed think are so good and safe for them.
Good hot dogs are disappearing quicker than we would like, Best Kosher, is the latest casualty. I havent seen a good pork, or pork and beef frank for a long time. Sorry to say this, it almost seems it would be an obituary column after a while.
Oh, and by the way Hams and beef rounds are made from animal Bums.

Sorry meat guy! I meant inner of the bum--but I'm asking. It should have been in the form of a question?

Don't most people regard hot dogs as snack foods or part of the jr's menu? I realize that there are websites for every kind of food by now, but back when I was growing up in the early 80s (and still was eating hot dogs) they tended to be seen as 'kids food.'

In my former life in the fashion industry I use to be a sophisticated, snot-nosed bitch whose knees would weaken when approachng the Nathan's in Penn Station where I would, against all instincts, order three plain and woof 'em down in 7 minutes.
There aint nothin' "child-like" bout a great dog.

Heck, I've got enough material already to do A Hot Dog Today, at least for a while:

I'd love to see one here on hot dogs, but I guess I don't see hot dogs having a huge fan[atic] base, wide-ranging regional differences, and # of restaurants devoted to it as burgers.
This isn't meant to be plug but Kathy (Passion for Food) has gone to this place in Honolulu. Every time someone mentions hot dogs, I think of Hank's Haute Dogs (see what he did there?) and I can't wait to check them out the next time I am there. Puts a new spin on hot dogs being just kids stuff.

Caution - this might revolt hardcore hot dog traditionalists!

Cassaendra: I agree that hot dogs don't have the fan base that burgers do, but not having the same wide-ranging regional differences? Nope, don't buy that. There are dozens of regional differences in the meat itself (comparing, say, a CT Hummel to a Chicago Vienna to a Hebrew National to a Rochester White, for example), the toppings (the slaw dog, the Chicago Dog, the Coney Dog), the bun (New England bun vs classic side cut vs Vienna poppy-seed). Heck, I've even seen flame wars on which is better, Papaya King or Gray's Papaya...
