Recipe Request: Portable Food Recipes for Inauguration Day
I am a newspaper reporter who will be covering the inauguration. I also love to bake, especially with whole, healthy ingredients. I would like to make something this weekend that I can pass out on Monday to all of my colleagues who will be covering this with me. We are preparing to survive below-freezing temperatures from 6am until 4pm with no shelter, just the small bags we can carry with us. We'll be doing lots of walking among huge crowds, so we need sustenance! Any suggestions?

Pumpkin or carrot cake muffins would be nice. Maybe a sausage roll or pasties for those who require meat for sustenance. Have fun!

I would say something that is slow-burning, like homemade granola bars, British 'flapjacks' (oat bars), nut brittles, cheese, nuts, sandwiches (pb, cheese, and so forth) homemade donuts if you are so inclined...and scope out access to places that serve hot coffee, hot chocolate, and soup!

Tell your colleagues to bring in an extra thermos (I'm assuming they'll have one with coffee or some hot beverage), and fill it with a hearty soup, loaded with meat and vegetables, or something like lentil and chorizo or andouille. I love dhorst's muffin ideas for breakfast with coffee (or saved for a sweet treat). I'd want a filling sandwich, too - to go with or before the soup. Lots of meat and cheese and lettuce on thick slices of your homemade bread!. Enlist their contributions if you're providing the baked goods, and maybe the soup. God Bless. It's brutal outside!

Muffins are always good. Or big, energy-dense cookies like oatmeal-nut-raisin. You could also do homemade spiced nuts or a trail mix.
I will be in the crowd! Whoop whoop!

101 cookbooks' Cottage Cheese muffins are coming to mind. She does sun-dried tomatoes and basil, but I wasn't psyched on something *that* savory for breakfast. I subbed in dried cranberries and fresh mint instead, and I really liked it. As she says on the notes, it is not like a muffin consistency ... but it's really good and hearty.
Have fun!

Hey great suggestions! I am not going to be in the ticketed area or along the parade route, but some of my coworkers will, and it appears thermoses are not allowed there! On a 34-degree day! I am still not clear on what size bag I can take with me, and I definitely don't want to have to ditch my only bag (with all my tools in it!) for security purposes. I think that is what is making this so hard to plan for.

Wow! And I thought that was such a glamorous job. Rethinking!!! How about a clear container, wrapped in newspaper to retain heat? Just thinking for you - not the co-workers.

I wish you could take along chili or something for real sustenance but going along with the muffin idea, here is a tasty corn muffin recipe:
Instead of cornbread, try these muffins with peppers, corn and chili powder – perfect for a Mexican feast.
Ingredients
1 C. yellow cornmeal
1 C. flour
2 Tbs. sugar
1 Tbs. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. dried basil
1/4 C. green peppers, finely chopped
1/4 C. yellow peppers, finely chopped
1/4 C. red peppers, finely chopped
1/4 C. frozen corn, thawed
1/4 C. margarine
1 C. milk
2 eggs
Directions
Grease muffin cups. Stir together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, chili powder and basil. Set aside. Sauté peppers and corn in margarine for about 3-4 minutes. Beat together milk and eggs. Mix together pepper-corn mixture and milk mixture with flour mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes until golden.

Love Hillary's recipe although I'd be temped to add some CHEESE!

A nice nut and seed mix (I like equal parts almonds, walnuts, salted cashews, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds) and cheese will provide tons of long lasting energy, plus they can be packed in a ziploc and kept in your pocket.

It won't be "below freezing," so you're in luck there. It's predicted right now to be 38, which is practically balmy compared to the temperatures here today - 18. As for walking around in the crowds, good luck. It's going to be wall-to-wall people - it always is at inaugurations, but this one is special. Whatever you're going to tote, though, making sure it fits in your pocket, because the security people - and there will be thousands of them - are going to be on the lookout for bags of any size. Backpacks are already prohibited. The "granola in your pocket" idea put forth by thinkingincrayons is the best I've seen. And make sure you know where the Port-A-Potties are. Gonna be interesting. Enjoy!

If you're not a youngun, find the lightest chair you can carry, or even a waterproof cushion to rest on occasion. Some have shoulder straps and weigh next to nothing. Don't laugh, but in crowds like that I'd be tempted to buy some depends and a pain reliever. Food and drink may be the last of your worries, walking around for 10 hours amidst record crowds.
