Top 10 Grilled Burgers in NYC?

In the hotly contested debate about NYC's top 10 burgers, round-ups only occasionally specify whether such burgers are griddled or grilled. Our AHT reviewers seem to prefer griddled, but I'm curious to hear from those with a bias towards grilled.

Thoughts? Kind thanks!

I am of the Griddle persuasion myself but can objectively enjoy a grilled burger. Here is a list of some of my picks (in no partuicular order):

The Burger Joint
Goodburger
Veselka
Wollensky's Grill
Primehouse NY
Spotted Pig

One of the things I am proudest of is suggesting the inclusion of the "cooking method" in the side bar of all AHT reviews. Let's grab a burger sometime Tam, I loved your review of Lever House.

Mr. Solares! What a handy addition. I've found it a helpful measure for why some hamburgers taste especially delicious.

As for a burger rendezvous? I'd be delighted. You bowl a mean game, sir.

Dumont Burger on Bedford in Williamsburg is my favorite. I believe it is grilled.

@Tam Lets do it! Shoot me an email at nick1968[@]gmail.com

Living in the West Village I have to say Westville and believe it or not I think the Burgers at Blue Ribbon Bakery are very under rated and worth mentioning...

5 Napkin Burger is intense. Also a fan of the burgers at Royale in the EV.

I had a terrible experience at Burger Joint and doubt I'll be back. We received two burgers, massively overcooked, under seasoned and on stale buns...so disappointing. As for Grilled Burgers, I like the Market Table burger a lot and agree Blue Ribbon Bakery puts out a good one. The burger at Beast and Soda in Brooklyn are pretty solid but not worth venturing out for.

I think by not paying homage to JG Melons is just a crime these days.. I must also say a great under the radar burger is Jimbos Hamburger Place... 53rd and 54th and 1st avenue. its been there from my understanding since the late 70s

What about Luger's burgers? Are those grilled or griddled?

Michael Jordans
Waterfront Ale House

67 burger in ft greene is pretty good.

Tony Dragone food cart 62nd and Madison. Stars on griddle then finishes over charcoal

Really, really liked the burger at Union Square Cafe. Not sure it's grilled, though.

Good call on 67 Burger. I should have mentioned it considering I reviewed it last year. I have not had Market Table yet or Little Owl, both of which are in the running for best burger in NYC, not just best grilled burger.

@THE_ZARO I love Melon, it is one of my all time favs, but they griddle cook their beef:

Luger's are grilled and while many consider it excellent there are serious problems with the execution. Over and under cooking are a bit of a problem. (love the steaks however)

No doubt: Burger Joint is tasty, but Dumont Burger is yums in my TUMS. totes worth it.

CHARLIE TU EATS!

Union Square cafe, hands down

Keen's Steakhouse!

I can't believe noone said PJ Clarkes yet. I think they are great, always perfectly cooked, nice roll, and fast.

TOP 5 IN NYC as noted on our site: www.burgerconquest.com

Old Homestead
5 Guys Burgers and Fries
Trailer Park Lounge
Burger Joint
Royale

If you can get to Hoboken though, Arthur's Tavern is a serious beef touchdown!

Thanks, Nick - It's about time Wollensky's Grill got involved in the top tier. It was always pretty good meat, but when they re-worked it a year or two ago it skyrocketed up on my list. The true test of a top burger is one that needs no ketchup - and, though I love ketchup, it would take away from WG's superior product.

I have hesitated for a very long time to mention my favorite burger in the city, but finally i realize, why not share the love? The burger at Cafe Loup on 13th street is phenomenal. It's huge, fantastic meat quality, and perfectly cooked. It's a classic burger, no fancy shit: subtle spice (just salt, I reckon); nothing but bloody, juicy meaty goodness. (And chedder if you're into that sort of thing.) Absolutely delicious. It is arguably "better" than all of these burgers, with the exception of Spotted Pig's. I mean, that's just the no-competition antichrist of burgers.

I don't know if they are grilled or griddled, but Pipers' Kilt in Inwood has by gold standardurger I have ever had.

And PFY PJ Clark's burgers are definately griddled, cause while I was eating oysters with my Guiness last week I peeked in the kitchen and saw a bunch of burgers lined-up and staying warm on the griddle. I just hope they don't sit there too long. 5 guys are griddled too.

I don't know it they are griddled or grilled, but Pipers Kilt up in Inwood (one of three locations) has my gold standard for pub burgers. I just cant believe they haven't been written up here yet?
