Thyroid & Food
In about two weeks, I'm having the right side of my thyroid gland removed. While I've been waiting for this surgery to happen, I've been reading various articles on the procedure and what to expect afterwards. Obviously, since I'm posting this question on Serious Eats, I like my food. I've read that anything with soy in it is not good for your thyroid and it seems like a lot of prepared food has some form of soy in it. I've also read that no matter how sensibly some people try to eat, they still gain weight when they've got a thyroid issue of some sort.
I meet with my doctor Monday, and I'll probably bombard him with questions then, but, in the meantime, I was hoping that somone on Serious Eats could give me any advice on how they've dealt with this. Thanks!

Talk to a nutritionist or dietician. Your doctor can tell you all about the medical issues, and he's probably got a good overview of the rest of it, but there's so much to know in the medical field and so many doctors have specialties...you may be better off posing these questions to someone who has made nutrition their specialty.

I agree that you must get with your health professional to advise you on specific food groups to avoid or not. I'm sure you know that you can have a temporary need for soft food after your surgery. When I have been in this position, I loved my scrambled eggs. Good luck.

the only food i know about is grapefruit. when i was on thyroid meds, i wasnt suppossed to eat them as they increase the effect of the drug.

Definitely ask your endocrinologist. I have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), so I supplement with Synthroid. I have regular visits with my doc who does blood work and keeps my dosage on track. I've never been told to avoid any particular food, but hyperthyroidism is a different ball of wax. Good luck. When you get balanced out, you'll be amazed how much better you feel.

I have both Addison's and hypothyroidism, and it's an evasive science to determine what doses are correct. Numbers on lab reports are not very much help, so a good endo willing to listen and not phone it in makes all the difference.
