The Skinny on Miraculin (Miracle Fruit)
So, I've heard so much about this "magic berry" recently, and I've done a fair amount of research on it. Anyone out there tried it? What did you think? Annd...where can I get it?

I know of at least one place online: miracleconnect.com. We've tried them in the office, and I'd say it's worth it just to have the experience. (You can read many links about the fruit at the aforementioned link.) I know of a couple people who have gone to "miracle fruit parties," where the host has them on hand and they try different foods with them.
We tried them at SE HQ at one point, and it's ... a bit odd. I tried lemons, limes, and Guinness stout. It made the citrus taste almost too sweet, and the Guinness tasted like chocolate. Afterward, the aftertaste lingered for a half hour or so—a sickly sweet and almost-metallic tinge.
A bit of warning: Don't try them before going out to dinner. The effect may last for a while for some people. I've heard that it may last up to an hour or so, although it lasted about a half hour for me.
They're about $5 a pop at miracleconnect.com (but get cheaper with larger orders), and you'd need one per person. So if you were doing a party, keep that in mind. There are probably worse ways you could spend $3 to $5. You could get the 36-pack ($108 = $3 a pop) and ask each guest to bring something to try.

Oh, I tried grapefruit, too. I HATE grapefruit -- it's too bitter (and a mess). The miracle fruit changed that. I was finally able to eat grapefruit. If that tells you anything (and it probably doesn't, since you really don't know how much I do not like grapefruit).

Going somewhat off-question...
I'd have to try it with a onions and cilantro then! I'd have to get past the smell of raw onions before eating it though. And have a picture taken.
This reminds me of the CSI episode (I know it was blown out of proportion) where there was a party and miracle fruit was served. People were eating all kinds of junk. Someone brought elephant poop, and the female victim ingested a product similar to Drano.

@Cass - I thought if the same CSI (I think it was CSI NY)episode as I was reading Adam's description! Which made me think, I'd rather try it at home, on my own:-)

I've been really interested in the miracle fruit for a long time. ThinkGeek also has tablets made from the miracle fruit.

I hosted a miracle fruit party last year for my food blogging pals in Baltimore - see the action here.

@Cassaendra--that CSI: NY episode was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this post.
I wonder if the miracle fruit would be a good solution for super-picky kids? ;D

I sell the fresh fruit on my website at www.ethanbradley.com. Thanks!

I saw the CSI:NY episode just last week involving miracle fruit. Right after seeing it I did some online research and found a gourmet food store fairly close by to me (www.edengourmet.com) that carries the berries. They were $5 each (a bit on the expensive side) but I figured why not, let's see if they work. Well, from my experience, they do indeed! I highly recommend doing a "before and after" style taste test. Limes and lemons were very sweet, coffee tasted about the same, and beer had a slightly sweet tinge to it. This morning we ate the last of our berries and shared white grapefruit, pink grapefruit, red grapefruit, and a blood orange. All of them tasted delicious! Well, the blood orange, oddly enough, did taste sweet but had something of an artifical taste to it, like Equal or Sweet-N-Low. I haven't tried the tablet form that I've seen advertised online yet but I intend to now that I know from my experience with the berries how it SHOULD be.
Something to note though. I had the lemons and limes on a Sunday morning on an empty stomach and even though they tasted delicious the acidy effect still hit my stomach like a ton of bricks so be careful. And I talked up the effect of the berries to a coworker who is a smoker. I gave him some berries to try and he came to work the next day after trying them in his words "unimpressed." I'm guessing he either didn't slosh the fruit around on his tongue long enough or his sense of taste has been altered by smoking. Oh well.
