taking the edge off......
trying to be good and not succumb to something sweet ... so i just took the edge off with the ubiquitous (something that appears frequently) clementine....
how do you take the edge off???? a piece of 85% dark chocolate works too.

I've got a big bowl of chocolate mint candies left over from Christmas. Want one? Mint flavor tends to linger, so maybe it's a good idea, I dunno.
If you're trying to curb your appetite before dinner, something sweet with something hot is supposed to do the trick. So a nice piece of chocolate with some coffee or tea would probably work.
And the really good thing about the candy-coffee snack is that since it's part of the food plan, it's not like it's cheating or anything. And a moment of quiet as you savor that chocolate can be relaxing.

Tanqueray and tonic with a lemon.

yes, the coffee/tea with a chocolate is a nice combo. maybe peppermint tea with a chocolate????
anyway, i'll live.... i'll take a big glass of water and that will do it for the night. the last flavor i'll have tonite is toothpaste. :^)

I live with diabetics so I keep myself a stash of Hershey Kisses. Cherry Cordial flavor this bag. If I have a craving, 1 or 2 will satisfy. Minty sugarless gum will distract me if I have it bad.

I curbed my appetite before dinner tonight with an especially large vegan chocolate chip cookie from Whole Foods. Oops. And then some roasted garlic bread. Oops. I guess that's what you get for having a really early, really light lunch.
The dark chocolate trick usually works for me, though I prefer dark chocolate with orange. It's a nice little treat that keeps me from eating basically the way I did tonight!

While I don't eat much (never could) and don't care to curb my appetite, I always need something sweet at the end of the day - probably the habit I'd developed growing up, when my Gran gave us a slice of cake with a glass of milk as an evening meal/snack.
There are quite a few things that can do the trick, depending on my mood and availability:
* some kind of fruit, depending on the season: an orange or clementine, a bowl of strawberries or blueberries or cherries, an apple, etc. I may take a couple of slices of cheese with it (even though then, it becomes supper:-)). Sometimes, even a small bowl of cherry tomatoes does it.
* a minty Three Musketeers bar
* a small slice of cake or pie, if we have any (usually, after some kind of a special occasion)
* a Jaffa cake or two (my big weakness)
* a dark chocolate truffle (I always keep a box of good Belgian ones on hand)
* a cup of milky Earl Grey or chai (I don't add sugar, but the milk makes it sweetish enough to satisfy my 'sweet' craving)..
* a shot of Baileys
* a shot of Cherry Heering
* a spoonful of Nutella
* a spoonful of dulce de leche
As you can see, I'm very resourceful:-)

Oooh, and how could I forget - a small bowl of pistachio ice cream is a very valid option as well!!!

It depends on what I'm taking the edge off for. If I don't want to go to a cocktail party ravenous, where I will eat several of every single hors d'ouvre, cracker, piece of cheese they have (my natural inclination), I'll eat a veggie sandwich before I go (lettuce, tomato, cuke, sprouts, avocado on multigrain bread). To curb a sweet tooth, I will generally go with hard candy. I like chocolate okay, but not like most people seem to, so I very rarely find myself with choco cravings. If I'm on a diet and starving but out of points, I go with salad and a dressing of rice wine vinegar and mustard, which is actually pretty tasty, though it doesn't sound it.

That candy could cost me around $5,000 in dental work, I go shopping and think about the cash I am saving.
Shelleyanne at 9:43PM on 01/04/09
A nice piece of cheese.
Or a beer!
Depending in what edges need to be taken off.
