Super Bowl....WTF y'all doing?
Super Bowl.......Well it is creeping up. We have not yet figured out what the hell we are going to do? Go out to our favorite watering hole or have a super bowl party here at the house (your all invited by the way). So if your going to your fav watering hole, going to someone else's house or your hosting your own super bowl party what are you planning on making? I would do the usual chili and the french bread pizzas seem to be a hit, but I want to make something different this year that will blow the people away and I have seemed to come across a gigantic brain fart. Any ideas?

Sounds corny but my husband and I have a SOUPer Bowl party with our friends. Each couple/person brings a homemade soup, bread, and dessert. Over the years it seems that we all end up making our favorites: chilli with cornbread, chicken tortilla soup with cheese quesadillas, broccoli cheese soup with crusty rolls, and clam chowder with oyster crackers. For dessert there are usually brownies, chocolate chip cookies, Texas Sheet Cake, and ice cream. Don't think our party would exactly blow people away but at least no one is responsible for preparing the bulk of the meal and there is a good variety of food for everyone.

I have to say, I haven't given a thought to Superbowl food yet, but I do think it will be hard to top last year's 'bowl'--of course, I am a biased person from the NJ/NY region!
@Esmeralda, what a great idea for a party, btw--I am much more of a 'sides/apps/dessert' lover than an entree person, and that would be my ideal type of meal, really.

Well I won a trip to the Super Bowl in New Orleans in 2002 so I always make my prize winning Warm Mushroom Dip. I think my Ruben Pizza will be on the menu too. Oh yeah and those silly Bacon wrapped Pretzel Rods my sister went nuts over last year.

i call it STUPOR BOWL! anyway, i'm not a football fan having grown up in a teeny, tiny apt. with my grandfather, father and brother who had to listen to and watch every sport known to man..... those announcer's voices still haunt me..... it was torture. all i wanted to do is play with barbie.
but i hope you all have fun!

I think the "souper bowl" is a fantastic idea. I will do that this year. Perhaps make a mini salad bar to go along with this. Since we tend to graze throughout the game, maybe a sundae bar as well... ice cream, various fruits, chocolate sauce, whipped cream.... How about the invites? Souper bread bowl sundae?
floridagirl at 10:43AM on 01/02/09
What's a Texas Sheet Cake?
Super Bowl's not such a big deal among my group of friends but in the past it has been all about nachos.

We do not decide till we know the teams playing - then our menu is based on local foods for those teams.
Last year we went to the game here in AZ, but the year before we had Chicago style pizza and REAL Chicago hot dawgs and Italian beef samiches, and shafted Indy because we are all from Chicago originally, but you get my drift...

Don't hate me, but I really don't care much for American football (ducking). My OH does, however, and since I used to be rather passionate about our footy (although at this point I only ever really follow World Cups and UEFA Championships), I'm trying to be very understanding regardless.
Apparently, after I'd sent pulled pork, coleslaw, smoked sausages, caramelised onions & peppers and homemade sesame rolls to his last tailgating, it was unanimously decided that we are hosting the Super Bowl party this year (in fact, I was requested "not to change the menu too much"). I may be adding wings and/or bacon wrapped bread sticks. Or some Middle Eastern style "chips & dips" - pita chips, hummus, tahini sauce and aubergines, these are always popular. We'll see, this will be one time I'll let the popular vote determine what's served - I'll have my OH send his friends an email with a menu, open for comments.

We always stay home and always have burgers on the grill and salad for dinner - chicken wing dip and tortilla chips for the game.
caramel at 12:25PM on 01/02/09
@brooke29--when I was living in the UK, I remember a guy approaching me when everyone was watching Arsenal play and shouting--'why are you Americans such a bunch of jessies that you can't call football football and you have to play rugby with all that bloody padding?'
I like the 'event-ness' of the Superbowl, although when it comes to watching sports, my real passions are running, horseback riding, and watching figure skating, hockey, and basketball. I do like watching European football because it's a high-scoring, fast moving game like hockey and basketball.
I wonder why only football and baseball have foods associated with them, as sports? Although Michael Phelps may change that with swimming and pancakes.
HeartofGlass at 2:56PM on 01/02/09
@Heart - indeed, my two favourite sports to watch are football (the one actually played with your feet) and basketball, and I think you may be onto something, they're both really fast-paced (and seem very logical to me), and really captivating. Usually so much so that I don't have time or desire to eat:-). Although, for some reason, sometimes I fancy a good bowl of Greek salad when I watch a game (feta, olives, veg - what's not to love!), but only in the beginning...
And yes, I've got to admit I do share that bloke's feelings...Sorry!

@florida girl: great idea about the sundae bar. Must let the gang know to bring the fixings for sundaes this year!
Texas Sheet Cake is a chocolate buttermilk cake with a hint of cinnamon. Some people like to add a pinch of cayenne pepper or ancho chili powder to the batter for a little more kick. The cake is then covered with chocolate frosting with/without pecans. Here is a recipe with a little history (sort of) of the Texas Sheet Cake:

I use a "lighter" version which is just as rich and moist:

I met my husband at a Superbowl party 10 years ago! They still host it year
after year. 4 barbecues going with everything from Hot links,Ribs,Chicken and Burgers. Everyone brings the starters and sides. I have yet to actually sit
and watch the game. Too busy catching up with the girls, and eating.
I am going to try The Pioneer Woman's stuffed Jalapeno's this year. I'm sure
my crowd hasn't had them, and judging from all of your comments they will be a big hit.

@Pooch: I call it the STUPID bowl myself and have since I was a child. I curse it more now that the powers that be changed the da** game from the last Sunday in January to the First Sunday in February as it screws up my daughter's birthday party. No one will come to her party if her birthday falls on Stupid Bowl Sunday (she was born on 02/02/02). Poor kid thinks people like football more than her! So we plan around it, but it bugs me.
Ok, back to food: I like wings, garlic cheese spread and pretzel bread, and whatever the rest of the family wants. Oh and I eat while watching paint dry.

We have a few standards and try to throw in something new each year. When I say "we", my 12 year old son has been in charge of Superbowl food ever since he declared it as his domain at 6 1/2 years old. That year he found 2 recipes online (so cute, he spelled cooking as "kooking" when looking for cooking.com, I pointed him to Food Network). He came up with prosciutto wrapped shrimp and chocolate dipped strawberries. His father was thrilled. We take a pork tenderloin, season both pieces with salt and garlic pepper and grill. Slice and serve with different sauces and rolls for little sandwiches. Horseradish mayonnaise, horseradish mustard, honey mustard, brown mustard and whatever else we're inspired with at the time. Last year we had fish tacos with a crema he made of mayo, chopped garlic, plain yogurt, cilantro and finely sliced green onions. Ribs one year with an amazing bbq sauce he found and embellished. He's a serious carnivore, as is his father, we're thinking of trying a brisket this year. I'm from Texas and embarrassed to say I've never made one. My dad cooked it til it was DEAD, so I wasn't ever really interested.
I have had Texas sheet cake though. YUMMY. You Have to put pecans in the frosting! And if you don't want chili powder (which is good) at least add a little black pepper. It won't taste like pepper, just add a little depth to the chocolate and cinnamon. Mmmmmm

Here is the warm mushroom dip recipe:
Sautee 2 pkg. (10 oz. or so) sliced mushrooms in 3 TBsp. butter
when liquid comes out of the mushrooms sprinkle 2 TBsp. flour and stir to soak up the juices. Stir in 16 oz. container sour cream based onion dip (like for potao chips) pour it all into a greased pie dish. Sprinkle with sharp shredded cheddar cheese. Bake 30 min. or bubbly. Serve with firm crackers. This can be made ahead and baked anytime. Yep this won me a trip to the superbowl. The dairy company that makes the onion dip sponsored it!!
joanpieroni2 at 11:55AM on 01/03/09
Thanks Joanpieroni2! Didn't mean to yell on the other thread. Couple of other questions. any particular mushroom? Was you brand of onion dip a national one? Can you tell I really want to make this??
izatryt at 12:33PM on 01/03/09
my roomies and i are doing the traditional chili, cornbread, chips, beer, etc... super bowl party. sorry to be lame haha but we're college students, its tradition and my roommate wants an excuse to use a ton of tomato paste she has somehow acquired. i am going to get a little creative with our dessert menu however... and make my nana's pepperoni bread. that's always a hit. oh love the super bowl... so excited its about that time!
vanillapudding99 at 2:13PM on 01/03/09
Any mushrooms are ok, I usually just use the pre-sliced white ones to save time. The brand of onion dip was Bison but I think that is a local Buffalo, NY area brand. It is so easy to make. If you don't have acess to a onion dip you can make some with a pt. of sour cream and a package of onion soup mix. Let it sit about a hr. before making the mushroom dip.
joanpieroni2 at 5:31PM on 01/03/09
Thanks Joanpieroni!
